What a lot of people don’t understand/realize even now about this app state team is that they were highkey really good. Going into this game, they were coming off a second straight I-AA National Championship. This victory over Michigan would propel them to another excellent season in which they would win their third natty in as many years. They didn’t just come out of nowhere lol

Great question. My assumption has always been they wanted time just in case of a bad snap. They could fall on the ball and scramble back to kick again with time on the clock. If you kneel then spike, you only get one play. But I agree, they left way too much time on the clock.

With all the turnovers in the 2nd half... and giving Mike Hart that big TD run, this adversity would have sunk other underdogs. A timeless show of effort and heart by the Mountaineers. Absolutely the greatest upset in NCAA college football history; while the Mountaineers were talented there was no way Michigan should have lost this game. Michigan figured it would be a rout before the game started and the Wolverines underestimated the Mountaineers team speed; credit goes to the victors who almost lost the game at the end but did what was needed to silence 100,000 fans. What an amazing game!

What people fail to realize that APP State team was coming off of back to back winning National Championships. APP State was that good of a team. People just slept on them because they were a small school. If Michigan was going to lose to anyone it would be APP State. It wasn’t that big of an upset.

As a Non- Michigan fan I have bittersweet feelings about this classic upset. I think that there's been more of a reluctance of P5 schools to " schedule down" for fear of embarrassment to the conference. App State has moved up in class,but lower revenue schools need the paychecks from schools like Michigan. The life of the program depends on games like that.

Teams like Michigan PAY big $$ to get to BEAT up "lesser" teams early in the season, as corrupt as this sounds it is how the lesser teams survive financially. For 2007 Michigan decided to pay less than teh normal $750K +.. Appalachian Sate accepted their lowball offer.. THEN EMBARRASSED MICHIGAN in their opener on National TV.. Hats off to App State Appalachian State ultimately settled on a $400,000 payment in return for playing against Michigan to open the 2007 season.

I was wondering the same thing it’s definitely a massive coaching error. My guess is the coach wanted less pressure on the kicker by it not being the final play, but that still imo wouldn’t be the right call to make. At the very least they could’ve ran a first down play to center the ball (or put it exactly where the kicker wants) and then spike it after bleeding the clock down at least a little more. Thank God for Corey Lynch🙏🏻

The reasoning was that App State didn't have any timeouts, and they didn't want to risk something crazy happening on a spike play, like fumbling the snap or something. My family and I were all watching and my dad (An App State alum) was FUMING that they didn't move the ball and spike it. Luckily, blocking the kick made him forget all about it LOL
