I don’t think there is an Australian in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or even their 90s, who wouldn’t know this music. One of the most iconic pieces of music in Australian television history.

Reichert was a gifted composer who only published a handful of works. This theme, used brilliantly in the Australian series "Homicide," is truly excellent but is best heard as it is here, in its entirety. If you think of "victory" as in victory in WW2 a whole new set of mental images is conjured. I thank the uploader so much. I have been looking for the original recording for years.

Loved all them shows. Thats why I never passed my exams. Always glued to the TV. Apparantly, there was an episode in 'Homicide' where the continuity failed. There was a car chase where the homicide cops were after some crims in a speeding scene. The cops came to a corner in a cop car and when they came round the corner they were in different cop car.

A very stirring piece of music takes me straight back to when I was a boy watching Homicide. Makes my hair stand on end for some reason, I believe this is the mark of a great musical composition and was something Glen Miller looked for in his works. The feelings it gives me is Victory and Foreboding all rolled into one .

With Respect Glenn Miller did not have a hair on this man as a serious composer. This is Sonata form with full symphonic Orchestral Choirs. Glenn’s music had merit but was a popular genre that relied on four note close brass arrangement with call and reply but not much real counterpoint. If you heard this live you would cry a full symphonic wind ensemble blowing flat out something very moving. The Orchestration is in this sublime and exceptionally individual. Now if you had said Copland or Barber I’d agreed whole heartedly, but Swing and 20 century Symphonic Art composition are very different. The closest Glenn came to Strings was one Double bass played pizzicato. No horns double reeds, no Tympani's, but as it’s an opinion he may of aspired as you say, but evidently settled for a popular idiom.

@@Steve-cs8nd I didn't compare Glen Miller to James Reichert I referred to the effect pieces composed by both have on the listener. It's the emotional connection the average punter is looking for in music, most don't know or care about the internal workings of a composition. Glen Miller knew what music needed to be loved and was enormously successful across the globe it had the emotional connection as did James Reichert's piece hence the reference.

I watched the Homicide TV series in Australia as a young boy in the 1960’s, I always thought the theme song was Australian until today after seeing the original record cover made in England. ‘Victory’ by (James Reichert) The New Concert Orchestra (1962).

Jim Reinhardt , like all sublimely gifted writers for Symphonic wind ensemble Choirs was an American. Hugely gifted and underrated composer not that long ago. Born in the early 30s from memory. This is a textbook example of interweaving the string choirs too. Half the Violas doubling the first violins called interlocking orchestration. It homogenises the choirs and really give body to the melody. I love old Jim. There wasn’t another like him. He didn’t go all twelve tone serial music fake arty fatty like Chagall painting with blue stick figures floating around the sky and being bullied by pseudo intellectuals and wannabe artists into calling crap and bloodbath lunches art. Serial Music is like listening to a kid learning clarinet for six months without improving.

They do for interstitials, but not so much for themes. It's so much cheaper to pay for something 'bespoke', from one guy who uses his computer.
