For an industrial loco, the paint 'splatters' could be claimed as authentic because even now, the cleanest of industrial locos on heritage railways can have soot splatters on the boiler which are stubborn to remove and sometimes don't come off at all.

I have the plain black version of this loco and I just love it. No quality issues for me apart from there being a loose screw from under the side tank in the ice cube. The amount of detail is exactly right, no silly fragility, lovely and heavy, runs fine, metal main parts and a flywheel for 130 quid, shows the naked greed of the larger manufacturers. The more smaller manufacturers the merrier. Very harsh on the detail and quality scores, very harsh indeed, both worth an extra mark (3.5) easily. Best all-round loco I've come accross for a long time.

I totally agree. The amount of detail on this very plain industrial loco is just right, I get fed up with picking up a loco and watching bits break or drop off. Performance is superb. I love mine.

Seeing something perform that well after the year of faulty motors and poor pickups was very refreshing. Aesthetically pleasing, but not something in my realm of interest. I do think calling out the lack of interior valve gear detail was unfair, given that this engine is a two cylinder, outside geared engine. If it had been something like a King class (4-cylinder engine with two in between the frames) that call would have been much fairer. Maybe there is something that they could have modeled in there, but certainly not valve gear. Great review as always.

To be honest, £130 for this is a pretty good price considering the slight paint and fitment discrepancies and basic lining, for me the colour makes up for that. For being the companies first ready to run model I'm pretty impressed by it, I'd happily run it on my layout if I had one. I might just buy one for display purposes if I can't get what I want for my birthday.

I'm honest for 130£ in 2022 it's very impressive for me. Industrial locomotives are always so interesting. The packaging looks good, the locomotive and the accessories as well. The fact that builder's plates are here, eventhough they are not that impressive, is very good. The small nicks in quality and detail is fine to me. The individual glazing on the back windows is very good unlike more expensive locomotives sometimes and the window guards as well. Just a shame that it doesn't have coal pre fitted. The performance is outstanding it puts quite a lot of more expensive manufacturers to shame. For the price, metal construction and performance definately a manufacturer I would consider buying from. Great review, Sam 👍👍

The ROD was the Railway Operating Division Sam. Another KZbinr always says, "department". I bought the IW&D loco in grey and a ROD loco in black (the correct colour), both from Rails who also sell them. The ROD is a rails exclusive. I don't have any quality issues on my two models but one coupling screw was a little loose out of the box on one model, so I just tightened it. As PI usually do kits, I thnk they said in an early video that they didn't want to add too much deail so people could easily personalise their models, hence three models with plain liveries. I like that there isn't coal because I hate seeing plastic coal. I would much rather add my own realistic looking coal. Both of mine ran extremely well, even before running in. I am impressed with them and I have had only postive comments on the model from my films.

Relaxing again Sam as per usual, and a very fair review. Us being new into the hobby on AC 3-rail H0 continental it is here on your channel that we are learning all about British steamers. Planet Industrials have done a fine job we thought. The tiny visual slipups here and there aren’t really troubling for that price tbh; they are of course minor points for improvements. Most of all, she runs reliably steady, can do an extraordinary crawl, and electrofrogs will most certainly solve the problem of stalling on points. We have little knowledge about British locos, but we imagine some extra details could be added by DIY, e.g. running numbers, a logo, etc. Well done for them, and a solid review again Sam. Cheerio.

Thanks for the review Sam. I have the green liveried Victory and am very pleased. She is a real workhorse. You mention the desirability of more small, industrial tank locos. I wonder if any manufacturer will produce an 0-4-0F - an Andrew Barclay prototype would be the obvious choice as Barclay produced more fireless locos than any other UK builder.

this reminds me of the tri-ang 0-4-0 you fixed on the last episode of salvage or scrap, but in a good way: it's a fairly simple, durable model with lots of die cast, that can take a beating and serve for years and years. I think it's designed for the same niche in the market as those fairly simple tri-ang locos were, but with a modern mechanism for great performance. edit: it also occurred to me that, as a kit manufacturer they probably also expect their fan-base to want to repaint their locos into a custom livery anyway, so they are less concerned about high gloss paint if they expect people to repaint or weather it.

Glad to see this review come up! I've gotten the ROD version exclusive to Rails of Sheffield, a very nice model especially considering it is PIs first RTR venture! They mention on one of the forums to add a very small amount of oil to the motor bearings, that should decrease mech noise significantly. Mine had the same noise and that suggestion definitely improved it.

There really needs to be a place for more solidly-built, reasonably priced locos such as this. Detail may not be perfect but as long as it's a good runner and the price makes ownership attainable, I'm all for it.

2.5/5 for detail? 2.5/5 for quality?? and 4/5 for value??? considering this is a new manufacturer and this is their first ready 2 run locomotive, it has already beaten Bachmann and Hornby with the features of a die-cast body, detailed cab, and a robust mechanism that actually works. sure the paintwork wasnt 100% with most of it being a blank canvas (not a bad thing!) and a few separately fitted parts were on strike but its early days for Planet industrials who, I'm sure will rectify these minor problems with their next model. detail is realistically more on a grade 3.5 or 4/5 just because of the cab and decently painted safety valves, also quality is more on the level of a 4 and value, at £115/130, is incredible for an 0-6-0 tank in this day and age and should be 4.5/5! this model shouts to all collectors as its ready to run, has room for customisation, is very affordable and DCC ready with speakers already fitted! this model should be the minimum all manufacturers should aim for, but nope, they don't, so I can see Planet Industrials making some hefty profits in the future if they keep this up!! :)

Cheers Sam, I watched this one when it came out, but I thought I'd just add a comment now. I was a little on the fence about the Victory at the time, but your review pretty well swung it for me. The quality of the mechanism and some of the features (such as inclusion of speaker and axle bearings) were most important to me, so I thought I'd wait until Warley to check out the loco for myself. I visited the PI stand, looked at the plain black and lined grey versions and loved each of them so much that I bought them both. I'm very happy to say that none of the issues you flagged up seem to be present on either of the examples I got. I'm happy to support PI as Stephen and James both seem like decent chaps - I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with next. James's book "Small Layout Design Handbook" is lovely too and has been handy in planning a layout for my Victory locos to call home. PS your reviews of other small locos over the past few years helped me decide on picking up a Hattons Barclay and Hornby Peckett W4 as well; both were bargains - thanks 👍

Hi Sam, A fair review and spot on ratings. Far from perfect but the performance, pulling power and slow running are just impressive on DC. The ideal shunter - industrial workhorse ? I agree with other comments that this loco is a good base to add details, lights, decals etc. The excessive - as noticed in other video's - gear noise reflects QC issues. It screams for a drop of oil and heavy weathering ! But not bad for a first including the provision to easy fit a DCC sound decoder. Will it have a place in your 'all time' best locomotives ? Cheers, Filip

It is interesting that the engine has a Belpaire firebox. This is unusual for an industrial locomotive because it costs more to build than a round top design and it also prevents the loco from having saddle tanks. It was probably built to the higher standard because they were being built for the government. Of the 4 pre-grouping companies, only the LNER didn't use the Belpaire design on their standard designs and actually replaced Belpaire with round topped types. The other companies used them because of the greater efficiency in boiling water so although there was a higher first cost, this was paid back by either more efficient generation of steam and or the ability to produce more power.

Nice little engine. It would look a lot better numbered and weathered. Being an industrial engine, it would be subject to staining by dirt, oil, cinders, and smuts. Running at the speed shown here, this engine REALLY looks prototypical - and the very controllable crawling speeds (essential in a shunter!) also help to make it 'look the part'. Granted the detail finish is not so hot, but to be honest, most of that could be tidied up relatively easily by a reasonably handy modeller - unlike the far more serious failing on the Fell loco, for example, fixing which would be beyond the capabilities of most people.

Love this little engine, but as a basic modeller in my 70's, have allways preferred 'basic' or railroad locos, I don't do DCC, nor do I want detail cab interiors, (unless I was 18mm tall!) sprung buffers, lights, sound etc., so if this was availiable under £100 I might get one, but it has power and good performence and running qualities, thanks for the review.

Nice model Sam. I think the noise is probably a symptom of needing a multiple set of gears to achieve the gearing for appropriate low running speed. This invariably imparts a higher degree of backlash overall. I'd take that over an inappropriate rocket ship speed of some of the lower priced Hornby tank locos as this model is likely to spend most of it's time performing shunting duties? Edit: When you first set off after coupling, did you leave half of your train behind Sam? 🤔☺️

This is by far the best gearing I've ever seen on an industrial locomotive! As lovely as the Hornby pecketts are they're ridiculously fast, the B2 especially. Another great review Sam 😄

@@SamsTrains Agreed. See what German manufacturers do. My Brawa BR 57, a 0-10-0 german freight tender engine, runs slower at full throttle than most of my UK engines at half throttle ! Worst case scenario, the 94xx by Bachmann, HST-like speed for an heavy shunting engine... By chance, my Dapol N gauge class 35, 27 and 22 are not overspeeding.

i ended up buying one of these for a very different reason, The strausburg railroad here in the US has their own version of thomas the tank engine and this model seems like a perfect basis to try and model that version of thomas

This review has pursuaded me to give this one a try. I'm thinking of the black version, with some LNER transfers as a station shunter for my layout! :) Also, hope to see you at Warley if you're attending this year, I'm only there on Sunday, but looking forward to it! :)

If the idea was to cut production costs by producing an industrial tank engine and trusting buyers to add their own industry name and weathering, then this was a very smart move.

I received the Grey one and the paint finish to the wheels was damaged with bare metal showing, having contacted PI they said they had issues with the lining thickness of paint on the grey ones, so something to be aware of if you are thinking of getting the grey model.

Excellent review, superb model and great value. Yes a excellent first RTR for the company. I quite like the finish, reminds me of a true industrial loco, not flash.
@davidknowles2491
@davidknowles2491 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, since these are industrial locos any defects in the finish would most likely be hidden once some simple weathering has been applied. I reckon people will buy these for its performance over looks, as it seems to be a right powerhouse.

It may lack detailing in its paint work, but, I think their is a market for this type of basic paint work. It would allow you to put your own fictitious railway and company names on with transfers. Would allow me to put a fictitious mining company on one, and a dockland railway on another. I'd like to see this sort of thing become more available, would make personalisation easier. At the £115 mark of course.

You need to remove a pipe form under the cab to remove the body. Did you break it, or were you lucky? Mine was an awful runner, needed the wheels re-guaging and lubrication, and had a 'tight spot'. It quietened down after that and running in., which improved it but not a great deal. Maximum speed with my Black Cat speed wagon was about 30MPH. The Next18 socket is in a strange place, at the side, requiring a very small decoder.

TBH the little niggles don't bother me,most of these will be heavily weathered,mine would be,if I could get a 2nd loco in green then the forthcoming cab conversion to the LH&JC version will be a good improvement

I feel this is unfortunate for Planet Industrials but does show that they haven't cherry picked a model for you. I have the same red example and there are no paint blemishes at all. Every separately fitted part is fine. I also have the absolutely stunning, excessively decorated grey version (I'm surprised that it isn't being reviewed as grey tank engine has Sam's trains written all over it) and again is completely free of any blemish. However, both are noisy, particularly the red one in reverse. Of course, you can only review what you receive.
