In the early 1950's (yeah, I'm that old) furniture, TV's and record players were "limed oak" as this unit does. The fabric, the dials and the tuning window are absolutely perfect. Victrola hit it out of the park on this one.

I bought this model in December. I highly recommend this Cambridge unit. The volume is very good, especially when playing vinyl and radio. The Bluetooth works easily, except the volume is poor when playing Bluetooth music through this unit. Overall this is great for the $

I enjoyed your review of this product. Glad to see the company making new products that have greater appeal. As you know, the Crowley and Victrola products have been heavily criticized by a number of reviewers at the higher end of the high fidelity spectrum. My sound equipment is composed of regular stereo components, good sound but not at audiophile level.. These systems that you review do have a place for those who enjoy music on records but not interested in investing hundreds of dollars in amplifiers, speakers and professional end turntables and miles of cable connections that require a considerable amount of time setting up and making precision adjustmenys to enjoy.

Hi great review, I agree that this record player sounds good and is a lot of fun. Unfortunately after 2 years of moderate use, my volume/power knob no longer works to power on the unit, so I have to use a master power switch located on the rear to turn it on and off. I noticed at 6:25 that your unit does not appear to have a rear power switch. Weird.

There are several other radio apps available depending on where you live - here in the UK we have a choice of Radioplayer, TuneIn and MyTuner (amongst others), all of which do a good job.

I love all the reviews and I wonder,if,in the future you could review the audio Technics lp5x turntable. Down the line I want to upgrade my turntable,I have a Technics sl b21 and it was new old stock, absolutely pristine even though it's 30 years old. I thought that the lp7 was the flagship turntable for audio technica. Here,it is priced around £625. The lp5x is around £340. The reviews in magazines say that the lp5x is one of the best in its price range.

The main difference between the Cambridge you're reviewing and the Empire Mid-Century which I own, is the lack of a cassette player and the knob positions. Both are fabulous all-in-ones.

I believe your Cambridge unit is done in the Farnhouse Oatmeal color scheme. I have an Empire in Farmhouse Walnut, which is slightly darker. Both colors are the two best options in my personal opinion.

There were radios back in the 30's & 40's that were called "Farm radios" but that was because a lot of rural areas didn't get electricity until the late 40's/early 50's and they were battery operated sets. Most of them took 2-3 separate batteries to run them, but a few would run on just 6v. the multi battery sets often used a 1.5 volt battery for tube filaments and a 90v battery for the B+ and yet another battery for a dial light if it was equipped. My grandparents had a 6v radio and they would run it with their tractor battery. When the battery went dead they could recharge it by putting it back on the tractor and hand cranking it to start it up, letting the tractor's generator recharge the battery while they used the tractor.

I noticed on my unit the tone arm does not return to the cradle automatically after the record is finished playing. The platter just stops spinning. Is this made that way or is it a defect in my unit? Great video and thank you!

Victrola has so many models of portable record players. It seems the Victrola BT Suitcase Record Player, which you have also reviewed, is the most popular--but I wonder if there is a variation in the quality of these different models. How do you think The Victrola Cambridge compares to the BT?

I bought a Victrola Metropolitan Mid Century Modern 4 in 1 turntable yesterday which had been discounted at Walmart for only $39.99 in Canadian dollars (roughly $30 U.S.) which was too tempting at that price, so I had to scoop it up for fun. The turntable works well with enjoyable sound when playing 33.3 rpm LP's and 78's (far crisper and warmer than my antique hand-crank Victrola gramophone player with steel needles), but I did hear some distortion at the 45 rpm speed, but that may have been due to the particular 45 I used or perhaps it's an issue with the stylus included? I generally prefer having both AM and FM, but the FM on this unit is excellent and it picked up tons of stations with clarity and warmth. I didn't really miss the cassette deck or CD player not included with this unit because it has an auxiliary jack in the front to connect a far superior cassette deck or CD player than seen in the 6 in 1 models and I connected my iPod which sounded fine. The Bluetooth connectivity to my laptop was very easy and it was fun playing music from KZbin videos or iTunes. It's worth noting that it RECEIVES signal via Bluetooth but does not TRANSMIT signal via Bluetooth, so it couldn't send the signal to wireless speakers, for example. I also tested the RCA red and white stereo output jacks at the back and connected them with an RCA cable to a Monster Adventurer Force IPX7 speaker and later a smaller MPOW speaker and in both cases, the sound was much warmer and richer. It could also be attached to an amplifier connected to wired speakers for richer sound, but as stated by Record-ology in the video here, the sound, though enjoyable, would obviously not compare to higher end stereo equipment or turntables, but overall, it was a very enjoyable unit and would be a great starter unit or a spare unit for a mancave or cottage or an apartment with space limitations and it does have that cool retro look on a budget. :)

I'm not sure why they don't include AM radio reception in these units, as the generic radio chip they use does actually support AM. Probably cost savings, since they don't think anybody listens to AM anymore.

I would assume it'd be a dedicated stylus for 78rpm discs. You should be able to find them online.

My Empire doesn't have that slot in the rear edge; it has room for an LP plus about a half-inch. So it doesn't get ANY dust when the lid is closed. (Unlike my Jensen 1250, which has three slots in its lid to make room for an LP. It's a dust magnet.)

I got a couple questions for you (which could also be a video idea as well!). #1, of these type machines (x-in-1, stand-alone, built in speaker) which is your favorite? #2 (this is the one that could be a video idea), if you could have your “dream” X-in-1 unit, what would you have? Personally, I would have 3 speed turntable (with a flip stylus so you don’t have to change it out to play 78s), Cassette, Bluetooth Audio in and out, external speaker hook-ups in the rear (either RCA style or bare-wire) with an oak or walnut looking finish. I don’t really need AM/FM radio because I rarely listen to it since I have Apple Music..which would also mean I don’t need USB/SD support for MP3

The other differences are that the Empire Mid-Century has a CD player, and it's box doesn't have a cutout in the back to make room for a record to fit. It doesn't need one, and is thus better for keeping dust out.

Unfortunately, this only receives BT it does not send it. So it will connect to your phone and act like a BT speaker.

I got one somewhere else, sorry 30% off . It reminded me of a old box player I use to have I wish I still had . With the aux I can plug in phone and use music apps. Portable C D player . And electric guitar with adaptor , but don't crank it. I recommend covering it to help keep dust from getting in the volume and tuner. The unit is cheep so , I could buy another one if something bad happened to it .

I own the Victrola Metropolitan model that has identical record player deck & it has built in autostop on 33 rpm. On the 45 & 78 rpm settings the platter keep turning when needle reach the end groove.

So no auto return...Seems like most record player decks nowadays of this type & price range lacks auto return in favor of just auto stop with manual return tone arm. Cost cutting i assume.

@@pelle556 Auto stop is simple. just a micro-switch under the tone arm pivot that turns the motor on and off. Auto return needs a mechanism to physically lift the tone arm, rotate it back, lower it down on the rest, and then shut off the unit. The more complexity you add to the unit, the more it will cost.

The copyright law itself allows up to 15 seconds of olaytime. If a label or publisher of the music sues you for playing that long, they will usually lose. Remember 15 seconds is allowed by the copyright law.

Copyright law isn’t the problem. KZbin has a system that scans audio for content ID matches. Sometimes accurate sometimes not. If that happens, I lose the ability to monetize the video. It could also be limited to certain geographic regions, or even removed from the platform.
