Thanks for this, I was having issues with low amps when charging...everywhere I looked seemed to point to overheating or cables. Last week I changed the start voltage from 14v to 13v and I'm getting a solid 30 amp charge now.

Thanks for sharing. I just installed a 18amp version to top up my custom lithium in my ford ranger . Also have a 30 in my caravan. The info on the settings is great

excellent explanation. Yes, Victron is "better" as you can change all the settings. but at the same time, without proper knowledge, they can be confusing. Many other brands are just "plug them in" and hope things work..... so thank you for your technical answers. Your video is helping me decide on getting the DC-DC charger or not. my truck has factory wiring to the rear plug for 30A. So putting the DC-DC charger in my trailer near to the LiFePO4 battery should work fine. (continuing to use the correct gauge wire of course). Having real-time data from my Victron SmartShunt will be key in understanding if everything is working or not. So many people only speak about RV or van systems and not for trailers (caravans). i subscribed to your channel and to your documents. looking forward to learning a lot. cheers.

Probably a silly question… what’s the difference between Power Supply Mode and Charger? I want to make sure I never kill my main battery. That happened once after I got it installed by a van build company. They set something to the wrong setting. I can’t remember what that particular setting was and I was wondering if you might know? It may have been power supply since you mentioned it is set to that by default. Thanks for any information you can provide.

when it reach 13V, how much current is the alternator pushing to the lead acid car battery? maybe the reason setting it to 14V is to make it sure that the alternator load is only in the victron device and only minimal current is pushed in the lead acid battery, so the alternator won't be overloaded or over heated. thats the essence of using that victron device to protect your alternator from lithium battery which has very low internal resistance

What do you mean by a combination of D+ and 13v? How to you set D+? I was consider using a switch at the terminal for manual on/off.

Hello. I just installed a DC/DC 30A. Afterwards I tried to start the motor and after a while the DC/DC started. When I turned off the engine, it took a little while before it turned off. Tonight I opened my victron app then it showed absorption input 13.8 and out put 14.5 and the motor was not running. Why does it do that? We are now connected to shore current 230V

Thank you for your EXCELLENT video. As the owner of a 1995 Fleetwood Pace Arrow motorhome, I have found nothing on KZbin that is really helpful in describing the correct installation of a DC to DC charger for it. Any such installation is complicated by the motorhome's cross-connect vehicle to house battery switch,. No one on the internet seems motivated to address in detail how to (in detail) properly install a DC to DC (Victron) charger on these older motorhomes. Maybe you can be the FIRST?? Thanks.

well explained. but my question is, when engine is off and its been over a week will it keep my starter battery fully charged. as yet not been able to find any info regarding this.

Great set of videos, really helpful. I’ve been trying to understand how I can split the output of my solar panel to both hab and vehicle battery. For example I’d like to send 80% capacity to hab and 20% to vehicle, and then 100% to whichever battery hasn’t reached a charged state. My current vehicle has a switch to flick solar output between vehicle and hab battery

Hello, is there a way to limit the current? if I have a Li Ion battery to charge, that can take 200+ Amps, how can I limit the output current in order not to blow the fuse or overcharge the alternator, charger, cables?

Hi I don't have any wall space left in 12 volt box which contains all my 12v gear the only place I can mount is on a flat shelf above the battery box. The area is open at the side of the van and at the front into the to the box which contains the rest of my gear so air is circulating around. Thanks for your details to set up it very much helps.

How do you deal with a feedback loop of the 4A float charge from a multiplus II? I have 3/0 running back to 2 12-12/30 as well as an ignition line.

Can you set the amps lower? I have a yuasa battery and it says should charge at 7amps.. ive just realised this. I will be changing batteries at some point

Quick question, in the dc dc charging from starter battery to living battery if the engine is running and the starter battery gets disconnected does the dcdc charger still works? Could you test this? Been searching for days on info on this on the inter webs and couldn't find any info.

Thanks for the heads up re the 13 volt setting as no where else have I heard this information which makes logical sense. If you have a solar charger as well is changing this setting essential? 🤗

I had a problem with no lights flashing or blue tooth connection. After much thought and head scratching I unmounted the charger and discovered my main chassis ground had fallen down where I couldn’t see it. Once I connected that up to the house battery I immediately saw the Bluetooth light flashing and could connect with my iPad. Very easy to adjust parameters on the charger and a great video with simple instructions. Thanks 🤗🤗🤗

Great video. I've installed a 12-12 15 amp Orion TR in a towable RV for a 100 amp/hr lithium battery. I'm using #6 (somewhat heavy gauge wire) all the way from pickup truck tow vehicle battery to input of DC-DC (probably 30 foot of wire total). One connector is used near the hitch point. The other minor resistance points are the terminal lugs under the truck engine hood and the in-line 30 amp circuit breaker next to truck battery. I'm able to get nearly full tow vehicle voltage to the DC-DC now. The original pickup truck wiring was only #12 wire and I was losing 1.5 volts between truck battery and DC-DC. Question: Where is the link to your document for the Orion? I found the link for the Victron shunt in a previous video. Thanks

Super useful, I have a question that I would like you advice on. I’m happy to pay for your experience if I can reach out directly. I have a 120v 30 WFCO converter that is capable of charging a 100amp hour LiPo battery. But I want to put a 200amp hour battery in its place. Can I put this Orion-Tr unit in between my battery and the converter to achieve the desired capacity? I can’t just rip the converter out, it’s an integrated part of the fuse panel for the RV. I think the Victron multiplus units need to sit upright for cooling, just like you mentioned for this unit. I don’t have enough space in our RV to mount it upright. Thank you in advance

That's a question. I am wondering the same thing because I keep having issues with my alternatore, eg, it's overheating, and I have gone through 3 alternators so far.

Found this, not a definitive answer. "Try the 'Gel(1)' setting. It's not aggressive and would do. What you choose really depends on how much you draw the batts down daily, and how long you have to charge them. You could go more aggressive if you have a limited time to charge them and have drawn them down somewhat. If they're in 24/7 storage, you might just choose a flat 13.2V. Maybe 'Gel(2)' for a little more grunt if you're time pressed.. Make sure 'Adaptive' comes up in the settings, unless you want a fixed Absorb time. So there's no single answer, sorry. I think most of the presets there cover the Victron battery range, but there's something for most tastes. I'm not sure with the Orions, but you should be able to modify a preset and save it under your preferred name, as an extra to the standard list."

I definitely want the 18A version then. We are in no hurry to charge and my cable run is about 25', so I don't want humongous wire diameter.

I have 16mm2 cable from starter motor to dcdc in caravan Total length of cable is 10m Ive a 30A dcdc only putting out 20A at best But it's also 30 - 40°C here so I'm guessing that contributes too No way would I go 18A dcdc

I'm wondering about the negative cable to the charger. I would guess there is practically no current running through it, so you could probably get away with 1.5mm, just to make life easier.

I've had mostly pretty good experience with Victron but sometimes I facepalm. These chargers could have been so much better. I was one of the people who wondered why my 12-12/18 was only putting out about 10-11A. I spent so long trying to figure out what was going on but it was made difficult by the lack of data in the victron connect app for the DCDC charger. If they had included the charging current then I wouldn't have had to do the maths, working out what was going on from my shut. Seems like a simple thing to include but it's not. Also, if it's throttling due to temp, how hard would it be to have that show up in the app too? Super frustrating device to try and get working correctly. It still throttles when it's hot and I can't do too much to help it because of where it is located in our camper trailer. Does my head in! So much potential. Anyway, hopefully the new Orion XS is better. Thanks for the video

Ive just had this charger installed but don't fully understand the settings ,the guy who fitted it said that when i start my van the starter battery stays at 12.4v constantly it doesnt peak to 13.8 or 14.0v etc,so he told me i had to put my heater on or flick the full beam on to aurge the battery for the charger to kick in?? It doesn't seem right i have to do that every time i switch the engine on?? I jave a 2016 vauxhall vivaro bi turbo,any suggestions??

I have a 2016 Vauxhall Combo Crewcab, so same age & make, electrics are likely to be very similar. I've got a Victron 12-12 18Amp which I intend to install in the next few days. I'm new to the concept ot 'smart alternators' but it sounds like your alternator or ECU is seeing the main battery as 'good enough' and doesn't need charging. Full beam would load the battery causing a voltage drop and the alternator would kick in. I'll see how mind behaves when I install it. The other thing I've read is you need good thick (prefably short) cables from the main battery to the charger otherwise the charger will detact a lower voltage. Now just need the rain to stop so i can get on with it...

@@stephencasey1882 Could be worth puting a switch in that green link so you know it's disconnected when you're parked up. I also wonder if setting the sense voltage lower could stop it disconnecting. I once had a similar problem with a voltage sensing relay when I flatted the back battery and it hadn't seperated from the front battery and nearly drained that too

@@stephencasey1882 Looking at the charger terminal block with the heatsink below, there are two smaller terminals to the left, a green block. You can see it in the header pic of the video. The two terminals are linked together with a wire, this makes it work. Remove the link wire and run it through a switch and that will allow you to disable the device (and seperate the two batteries). I've not tried this myself yet but that's my understanding. I haven't found anywhere to fit it yet, smaller van. The warnings about getting hot means I don't really want in under the seat where the second battery is so I'm trying to find somewhere under the bonnet.
