Hi Richy. Just been watching your Hebridean ride and your conversation with the Americans. Nice people and stunning little cottage. I'm a biker myself and still riding at age 74, (today as it happens.) I have a Yam R1 2,000 model. Then decided to get into the adventure bike side of things. So I bought a Benelli TRK X as a cheaper experiment. It's obviously not the trickiest bike but never the less I'm thorough enjoying it. I've never been used to bikes with all the latest aids so I don't miss em. I did 4 months riding and wild camping around New Zealand's south island 3yrs ago and also rode n' camped all around Ireland last year, about 7weeks in total. This year I'm planning on riding over to Bilbao to ride Spain and maybe Gibraltar. (Been there with the army.) I'm then going to follow the Tour de France stage by stage through France to the end at Paris, the tour starts in Bilbao this year. I don't have the funds to ride the world as much as I'd like but want to do as much as possible. I guess you'll agree that part of the fun of travelling, especially by bike is the people you meet and interact with. So many folks want to come and have a chat when they see you with a packed bike and I love talking with different people like those Americans. I usually avoid holiday resorts and cities etc. I much prefer to get out in the sticks, villages etc on the back roads and tracks. I've been a biker since the day I turned 16 so heading towards 60 years riding. Though in those times we could ride something, anything without licence, helmets, clothing etc. Different times I guess. Happy days.😀 My whole family including mum, sister, dad, and grandad rode bikes as a lot of people did in those days as ordinary working class people couldn't afford cars. Grandad had a Brough Superior as his daily transport. God if I'd only known then what sort of price they'd be fetching now it'd never have left our possession. Probably passed on to someone for next to nothing. So I was lifted onto bikes to wobble down some lanes by a family member with my legs dangling in the breeze n' a death grip on the bars to be caught further down the track by someone else n' turned around, quite often by the local policeman who was dad's mate, usually still in uniform. Like I said, different times. I really enjoy following you and others, usually on KZbin. You give me inspiration to do even more. I live in Rugeley close to Lichfield so not too far from your area. When I was on Lewis I visited the black houses there too and it's absolutely fascinating! One of them had a peat fire and the smell is amazing! But the weather again was intense-the Hebrides doesn't let you go without a fight! :)

when you get caught out in conditions like that, and you have no option but to carry on, it's a mental battle rather than physical; constant, prolonged concentration with an underlying sense of fear. I've been in similar situations and after getting back in one piece, I usually find myself crying after half an hour or so :) It's just the quickest way for your body to get rid of the excess cortisol and adrenalin. It's all part of the adventure....as we say to ourselves.

You are some kid Richy. You did well on those roads. You need to come back and head south to the bottom of the islands. Short ish ferry ride from Leverburgh to Berneray. You have causeway all the way to Eriskay. Another short ferry ride to Barra, see the planes landing on the beach, and head back on the ferry to Oban. The entire place is heaven on earth.

we used to call Timsgarraidh Apache pass for obvious reasons, but may I suggest a spring time visit when everything is green not white lol and oh that ferry crossing is a pain, I used to get the 5am crossing to the mainland and sleep in the car to avoid the sea sickness, they stopped you doing that after the Zeebrugge ferry disaster, my first crossing to lewis (9am in 1985) I was sick as a dog, it was very rough seas and a few nice elderly gentlemen took pity on me and plied me with strong drink, I'm sure I was over the limit when I got off that ferry the only time I drove with alcohol in my system

Fair play to you Rich, you did well getting to the Western isles in January, I'm a born and bred lewis man, also a biker I'd say you'd need 2 weeks to see most of what the Western isles had to offer. That medieval fort is my family's supposed heartland in legend. There are many tall stories, to be taken with a large pinch of salt, about their escapades and feuds with the Macleods. My dad attended the opening of that bridge. He married a Macleod. That probably explains a lot about me. I used to live in Ness when I was married - I know these roads very well. If you do come up this way again, try doing the loop - coming up via Ullapool to Stornoway and back down through Harris, Skye and the Western Highlands. It's an epic journey.

Epic as always Richy, I stayed at the black village a few years ago with the scouts. The kids were in the bottom house that had a very low concrete beam running across it. Both myself and the other taller leader managed to bash our heads on it 😆.

You're right. You owe it to yourself to go back there in Spring. The Outer Hebrides is one of my favourite places in the world, and in my opinion, Harris and Barra are even better than Lewis. There's a lot you didn't get to see, as I'm sure you know.

Fantastic experience, but a shame the conditions prevented you going further. You were approximately 8 miles from beautiful Luskentyre, but the Harris hills there and back would have likely been treacherous. If you ever go again would gladly recommend some stunning roads and places, many less visited by tourist, in Lewis, Harris, North and South Uist, and Barra. I live near Brighton, and it's a long enough haul driving, but I'd also gladly ride with you.

Quality Richy. Harris \ Lewis is my favourite place on earth. The diversity of landscape in such a small landmass is amazing. When you consider people lived in the Blackhouses up till recently just shows how difficult it was to scratch out a living. Hardy souls back then.
