When you have kids at a large event and you need something simple to teach them about alternative energy then this is pretty good solution. Also since this is DC power, it can be connected to a lead acid 12 Volt battery to store your energy.

I’m trying to make a mini Vertical Axis Wind Turbine( VAWT) from an old Cordless Drill motor to charge a 12v battery, can you pls tell me what size Blocking Diode is needed?. I’ve got all the materials, and am good with fabrication, but am stuck on the electronics re blocking diode!.

@pixar5 AC motors run fine on DC voltage. The generator in the video is DC output.

Well, I see that a tire was removed from the rear rim. At least we don't have to worry about unnecessary wear and tear on rim tires with this experiment.

How about a video featuring a bike generator setup to power a battery bank instead of individual items? Could you attach the diode to the generator wires, then to a charge controller which is also hooked up to a solar power system. The idea is that if an RV is parked under the shade, or needs power at night, or a house emergenc battery system needs power at night, you could set the bike up inside and charge the batteries. Do you have a video showing this practical application?

i was unaware you can take a dc motor and put in a ac plug and get ac power directly from the dc motor thought you had to have a dc to ac inverter to get this effect

@BigPimpB1 You can get a bicycle trainer stand from a 2nd hand store for around $20.00. Also you can find one on craigslist by typing in the search phrase "trainer" . For the generator part, you can buy a DC permanent magnet DC scooter motor from craigslist or Ebay ~$40. You will have to remove the gear on the shaft and fit it with a roller or pulley to make it work. Lastly, you can make your own adapter plate using free plans from pedal power generator d o t com

WHAT IS THE RPM REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR GENERATOR ? what kind of force is required to maintain that rpm ? is it like pedaling uphill or is it easy to pedal ?

when you put the socket on the cables whitout an diode you wil get AC i a sinewave and not DC!

+Bethany Brown Hello, the easiest type of battery to use with this system is a battery powerpack. But if you just want a battery then you would use a 12V Deep cycle battery AGM style (The kind that can't spill). You must use a fuse and a blocking diode as shown here: blockingdiode.com . Smart, yet not smart enough to know the front fork of the kids bike is on backwards. Also connect the rear brake clamp loosely before you tighten the rear wheel up, then tighten the clamp up.
