In simple terms, the Gradient Factor High (GF High) is your personal guide to a safe surfacing point during a dive. It's like your trustworthy co-pilot, ensuring you reach the surface safely by controlling the decompression stops towards the end of your dive.
The GF High is the second part of the gradient factor setting on your Shearwater computer, the first being the Gradient Factor Low (GF Low). Together, they help you manage your decompression and ascent rate according to your comfort and safety levels.

A Buhlman 100 doesn't mean you're bent. Neither does exiting with a GF under 85 mean you aren't. Buhlman 100 is based on a certain percentage of divers being bent running that M value, but the divers used to test it were young, fit and diving in fairly warm water. Adjust accordingly if you fit fewer of those categories (being old, unfit and cold for instance).

Yes agree. I thought I said it is a high chance of getting bent and I sure would not want to be at 100% of the m value with zero conservatism built in. Yikes!

Hi Woody, thanks for making these videos! Can you please explain how you decided a GF high of 70, and not 65 or 75 or whatever, is right for you? Thank you!

Well I wanted more conservatism and when Doug told me he sets his high to 70 and so does Simon Mitchell, I said to Doug “you had me at you set….” :) I like the 30% buffer from the m value.

OC Tx diver here, who is fully conversant with Andy's article and lots of the other published deco theorem. I vary my GF based on all of the alleged known contributing factors and where I feel I am in that scale and the dive profile I'm expecting. Interesting to know you use a Gf-Hi of 70. Were you also using this prior to your recent trip to the pot? As if that's the case, I may want to sometimes add a little more conservatism... :\

Yes I’ve been at 70 gf high ever since my first ccr dive years ago.

But then again, I also amend my shallow stop profile depending on what I've done/how I've felt during the dive, and come out based on what my SurfGF tells me I'm at. Rather than simply following "the plan". If I have the time, and I have the gas, I might as well use it...
