any realtors out there? are buyers shying away from edge homes because of this? or are they just shying away from homes built on a cliff? I am wondering if homeowners in these neighborhoods wanted to sell their homes now, could they even get half the appraisal value?

@C H The only view that's important is the view on Him. Matthew 7:24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

So does the city inspector still have a job? The soil technician that passed the compaction tests? Engineering that came up with the project and what needed to be done before inspections? Always amazes me they need to take a hill/mountain that’s been there for hundreds if not thousands of years through all the weather and seasons. Cut it all back and down, bring in fill and re compact it to build houses instead of just cutting in a road leaving the native alone and just drive in pier posts for those homes on hillsides.

Ya, it's hard to evaluate when the forces of a sinking foundation are so intense on the house. I've seen videos of whole houses tumbling into flooding rivers, but the two distinct examples I'm thinking of the houses were both quite basic and square in design. With this more complicated architecture it increases the number of weak stress points in the structure.

You see it time and time again. Houses and businesses built on land fill ,on hills or cliffs that in time will fail. You have to stabilize, build a wall and anchor it into the bedrock. Same with dwellings, have to anchor them into several feet with steel and concrete. Also drainage has to be addressed. Another thing is to test the land you're building on.
