Video Editing Without A Video Editor

I make use of Kdenlive for all my videos but I could probably get away with a lot less, but what I wanted to just do away with the video editor entirely. Well that's also possible for a little bit of work.

I know Drew probably won't see this, but vapoursynth is exactly the type of lunatic software you'd use to chop up and stitch together video clips in a simple way without ever having to learn how to use normal video editing software. It'd be as simple as writing "clip1 + clip2 + clip3" except here the clips are variables where you pick the start and end frames instead of starting and stopping the recording for each segment in a meticulous shot-by-shot plan of your video.

lol, wow, I do almost exactly the same as Drew. A capture card also helped me get footage for a chromebook thing. Idk, doing multiple takes feels way more natural than actually editing. Sort of like practicing for a stage role. I don't use mkvmerge, but I do something similar w/ ffmpeg. Normally I wouldn't be throwing ffmpeg stuff into youtube, but this feels like the right place ffmpeg -safe 0 -f concat -i files.txt -c copy combined.mkv This combines all the files listed in files.txt. The files.txt file looks something like file1.mkv file2mkv file3.mkv You could do this in the terminal without a file.txt, but that takes too much effort. ffmpeg -ss 00:00 -to 00:04:54 -i video1.mkv -c copy video1new.mkv This one cuts from 0 seconds to 4 minutes and 54 seconds of a video. You can adjust to have it start and stop at different times. I'll just have these in .bat or .sh files on my Windows and Linux setups. The best part is -c copy, which just copies the audio and video streams into a new container, avoiding having to re-encode, which makes them runnable on a toaster. Glad to hear that there's another person out there who going out of their way to avoid messing with editing software. There are literally dozens of us! (dozens of us!) Also, thank you for keeping up the podcast, Brodie. It's crazy that it's been going on for so long. Literally went from dude who watched a Luke video and installed Arch to one of the most well informed Linux users on the platform. An absolute real one. Sorry for the up too late tl;dr.

That method might be the one I'm looking for. I enjoy recording videos, but I don't enjoy editing them. At least I can simplify and quicken my least liked process in video making. Thank you for this 🩷
