I've been collecting my entire life. Most of it has come within the past 15 years. Never paid more than retail. I think the most I've ever spent on a "retro" game is ~$60-70. The people that invest and spend three or four figures for single games is nuts. This time is very similar to 2008-2010, a lot of video game shops went under or were bought out because you couldn't give a lot of this stuff away, tough times bring great opportunities for others.
@IcyVegeta2 күн бұрын
Only resellers care. If a game is too expensive, I'll just skip it and grab a ROM/ISO. Most of the games I care about, I already have, or those games are all within reasonable prices and supply.

99% of my collection I got before 2015 when I could still find $2 deals at the thrift store. I barely have any money tied up in this and I avoided paying hundreds of dollars for any game, so personally the bottom falling out in the market doesn't affect me at all. I think the most I ever paid for a game was like Final Fantasy 3 SNES off ebay for like $40 around 2014

My biggest fear as a collector is being at the point in the future where it really is hard to find childhood items cause they have been moved all across the world. As a retro game seller, i have seen a lot of Europeans buying American games and vice versa (i.e. Doshin the giant).

Its Mario Kart. It sold in the literal Millions. Even if you minus the copies that are lost/damaged/in poor condition there are THOUSANDS of copies that are in excellent or better condition. If you are going to spend that sort of money on a video game, buy something that you know simply does not have the supply to meet the demand. Anything Mario or Pokemon etc is just insanity.
@need2burnКүн бұрын
Ignoring the auction house scheming, the problem with grading is that it creates a bubble. This happened to both the comic book, records, and baseball card worlds in the 90s and those markets were decimated. When you get a $50 game graded, you now immediately add $35 or whatever it cost to grade into the price. People now think their copy of the game is worth $85. Then, these graded items will get put on eBay for insane money, and other people that have the same thing see that and think "Oh, that must be around what MINE is worth." Which bumps up the price even more and the cycle continues.

I did want to add this one comment. If your collection is made up of nba2k3 and drag racing etc, the good news is you probably didn’t pay much for those games. Just like you have gotten those games for free in your hunting, I see a lot of Xbox games dirt cheap. 20 dollars really stretches on those fluff games. So you may not be able to sell them for a lot but I’d be shocked if you spent more than 1000 bucks on those fluff games because the ceiling can’t go very high on those cheap games.

Sure, a sealed mario kart will def go up be in value but any game collector and even big time investor/speculator would've done their research to see how fabricated those graded game prices were and how companies like WATA were just pulling numbers out of thin air in order to drive prices up, and ultimately profit off people who don't know better

I like to buy new bc its cheaper than graded and gives me the flexibility to sale or get graded in the future as, for right now, being graded just means u have a plastic case covering it. I used to think it could be a legitimate investment, but honestly cash will always be king. When you really think about it if you are going to put your games are sellable assets you might as well put all your furniture and electronics in your house up as that too. You can sell those too and make money, but it will never cover true savings. 7000 in a savings account is better than a 7000 game collection. The only real value is how much and how quick is someone willing to pay. I went to a convention last year and a guy was selling his NES collection. He had nearly all of the heavy hitters on the NES from Little Samson to Dragon Warrior 4 yet no one bought them even on the last day. That guy had multiple 1000 dollar games yet even at a con nobody was buying them. What is the value in that? I would tell collectors and "investors" to save your money and just buy overtime. These new guys rushing out to buy collections and then losing it all on one high bill are just proving there isn't a long term value in keeping games as assets and the ones that are successful at selling usually have a high savings to go along with it.
@Alien_isolationist2 күн бұрын
$7k in a savings account can be spent with bad decisions, especially when intoxicated. A game room worth $7k I can sell slowly if I need cash, IF I need it. Don't put your savings in 1 basket
@jayblastnetwork2 күн бұрын
@ I think you got a different problem if you are spending your savings like that or intoxicated into doing it. It's better to build credit, pay it off and save then to just put it in games. Or get into stocks. When things break down you need cash then a game collection won't provide that speed with the same amount of money. Maybe if you sell every so often, but not all at once. You really want money on you more than in just physical assets. Technically everything you have could serve as that, but you wouldn't want to lose those items because something breaks down.
@MilkWasABadChoice172 күн бұрын
Sometimes going to conventions looking to sell high dollar stuff isn't always the best route to sell those things, the audience going to conventions usually look for the more popular things.

Ultimately, you cannot look at your video games in isolation relative to your other assets - which also fluctuate. It is no different than managing a stock portfolio. If you are a serious "investor", you take risk management seriously and you should ask yourself, "What % of your assets should be X?" X can be video games, X can be trading cards, X can be whatever. Then you imagine what happens if the value of X drops by 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%. Does that impact your life? I would say if somehow you need to emergency liquidate X, then the risk management part was not managed well.

As I started to mature into my 20s I started treating it like an investment. Which was damn fun no lies. Sold it all for 6 figures, but tbh it really wasn't even that much money lol I should of invested into something else for sure!!!
