Part of the reason you don’t see flea market / garage sale dumps of retro games anymore is because the people looking to purge that stuff have already done so. If you transition to PS3 / PS4 generation games there is still a lot of stuff out there. The problem with the transition to digital games is that eventually the floodgates of old inventory will come to an end.

Had a hobby of collecting games and consoles for 24+ years. started when i was 18 (that was 22 years ago) all games and consoles where physical, used, returned, on clearence sale. The bulk of my games where purchased when Funco Land, Electronic Boutique, Radio Shack, The Wiz, Circuit City, Sears and several mom and pop local video game stores where selling of all there assets and inventory cause of bankruptcy. Had well over 10,000+ games between, game gear, game boy/color, snes, genesis, neo geo pocket/color, ps1, ps2, gamecube, xbox, 360, ps3, wii, dreamcast, wiiU, sega CD, saturn, PSP, ps vita, nds, gba, 3ds, planed to play them all when i retired with my teenage son. I Wasn't wise enough to keep them in a dry, none humid place, keep them seeled, or even add them to my insurance. Kept them in a outdoor shed.. A few months ago, after that shed took a pounding after many years of storms, it got severely flooded! lost almost 75 percent of my collection do to disc rot, and water damage. Was devasted and lost all intrest to even try again. Money down the drain, cause of my own ignorance, carelessness, and stupidity.

Collecting just for the sake of collecting, I've never seen the point of that. I'm not gonna play THAT many of them anyway, and I'm also not usually replaying most of the games that I've finished, just those that gave me a really good impression or those that I have an attachment for since childhood or whatever. One of the biggest downsides of a digital library for me is that I can't sell back games that I'm done with for good, because I would have sold back like half of my Steam library or more by now.
@b4rs6293 ай бұрын
Agreed it sucks, but like... I'm not really bothered by that though because I very rarely buy games at full price unless it's early access like Satisfactory, Rust, Terraria, Palworld, or Indy titles. ^ Like I between these four games I easily have 3,000hrs into them... and I feel like I can get another 2000-3000hrs out of satisfactory easily. I got so used to playing the same games over and over due to not having alot of games growing up. I also tend to play games until I'm completely burnt out on them... until I find something else to hyperfixate all my energy into due to not having a lot of games growing up. I tend to gravitate towards games with no end game objective & games that offer lots of replayability. Civilization 5 & 6, Age of Empires 2,3,& 4., Cyberpunk 2077, Brotato, Vampire Survivors, Death must Die, Simcity 2013, Sims 4, & Zuma.

The thing you said about having a bond with a game you have experiences in vs a game you only have memories of spending money on, is profound. I say just enjoy the fact that your current collection got as big as it did before it became as valuable as it no doubt is. All my game cases were water damaged in a flood, and I put off replacing them too long, and now I will never have them all back again. So instead I am focused on discovering hidden gems I didn't know existed, like Galerians on ps1. I want to experience the art in that game, and I believe that experience will be worth the money, and if not, I can always just sell it, because this stuff is only getting more scarce. Even at these prices, as long as it is a good deal, I don't allow myself to feel guilty for splurging on something I want, when it is literally a good investment that outperforms most asset classes by every metric.

Totally agree and get it. If you ('you' speaking generally, not anyone specifically) just want to play, I think only getting something when you're ready to play it will work out more favorably in the long run for most people. Sometimes you'll pay more, and sometimes you'll pay less, sometimes a more complete better version will be out, but you can be free of the FOMO speculation and have a flexible blob of cash in the interim instead of plastic/cardboard accumulating on shelves. Some people enjoy the hunt, and some people want a collection. To each their own. I'd also argue most of us don't want to be either extreme. If it's too strict, one could think of other rules like one game a month or something. The shopping-retail-therapy-FOMO state isn't a great pattern to fall into for giving yourself dopamine and satisfaction, but it's a very easy one to fall into. Again, if someone consciously wants to collect then go for it! I'm just saying think about who's driving. Is it you and your passion, or some kind of retail therapy and FOMO driving you? It's hard and I don't think anyone will be perfect at it (myself included), but your passion should absolutely drive you in your hobbies. Not that other stuff. As someone that previously obsessively deal shopped and hoarded up games into a massive backlog, I'm personally trying to distinguish more between "This is one of my absolute favorite things" vs "Yeah, I want to play that game". I want to play a *lot* of games, but I definitely need to acquire and deal hunt all of them in advance.

I'm actually in the same boat as you dude. At this point I'm only actively seeking and collecting games that are on PS4 and PS5 (and Switch). There are still plenty of cool games I can play on PS5 that I haven't picked up and I'm giving those priority for now. For one, with how many remasters and remakes we are getting, it seems like often enough the older games I would maybe want to pick up will be playable in some form on modern consoles. And aside from that, while I personally don't like digital games that much, if some old game I want to play becomes available on the PS store for like 30 bucks whereas the physical copy is 120 or so, it just makes much more financial sense to me to go for digital (I really really don't like digital, but if I can save almost 100 bucks by doing it then it's mostly forced my hand). One day when I have more money on hand and games have gone fully digital only, I can see myself going back and really looking for physical copies of retro games to build up my collection, but for now I'm pretty satisfied with sticking to fleshing out my PS4 and PS5 library.

The “market correction” where the bottom falls out and prices across the board come back to earth is a unicorn event. People have talked about and hoped for this same thing with every generation of games… NES/Sega/8bit era hasn’t dropped in price since it started climbing in the mid 2000’s, 16bit era started climbing late 2000’s, 32bit since the early 2010’s, etc. These markets eventually peak, level out and fluctuate slightly, but that’s all. No one wants to let games go for less than what they paid for them and continue to sit on them. You may catch a break occasionally from someone in a bad way that needs to dump things quick, but without some major catastrophic event like worldwide financial depression where everyone needs to dump any assets they have for whatever cash they can get, today’s prices are the lowest prices you’ll see within maybe 5-10%. It’s unfortunate for those who just want to play games and maybe own a piece of nostalgia from their younger days, but at least there’s alternatives to play for those who can’t or don’t want to pay today’s prices.
@SecretOfMonkeyIsland7843 ай бұрын
NES games will drop eventually, people from that generation are now in there 40's, once they are in there 60s they will likely be selling them off to go on a cruise or give money to the grandkids. So i think you have another 20 years max before the demand decreases and the supply increases. We are already seeing a lack of interest with 70's console games.
@Lethargy013 ай бұрын
@@SecretOfMonkeyIsland784 The market for anything pre-NES era has always been tiny though. It’s all pretty much unplayable trash that never had the same demand as NES and later generations, so I don’t think they’re comparable IMO. We’re already 20+ years into an all upward trend in pricing starting with the 80’s era, so if we add the additional 20 you mention as well, 40+ years of upward trend before any price break, which only takes into account the 80’s era so far. Those 90’s and 2000’s nostalgia kids aren’t aging out for a long time from now. Put all that together and it becomes a unicorn event, or at least something that’s not going to happen in a lot of current people’s lifetime.
@hm98213 ай бұрын
For me it’s a couple factors -prices most games that everyone has nostalgia for are almost to a point that there is no valid reason to buy and just have on a shelf because I either play it so much that i don’t want to play it no more or is too “valuable” to play. -space like you mention I myself have 2 shelves that is it for space I have a 3 year old that just can’t wait to get his hands on anything I leave around . -shovelware I would say the biggest mistake people do when collecting “retro” they just go and buy anything and everything and you end up with games you can’t even sell for a $1 or give them away for free. Specially some of the Atari or just sports titles that are just million copies out there . - modern retro gaming making it easy so many old games didn’t have save states or game play was just slow and drag along. Nintendo online for example made it so much easier and enjoyable to be able to go back and rewind or simple been able to save and come back that makes gaming just more easy to play.
@UnnecessaryRambling3 ай бұрын
Yeah, the shovelware quickly begins taking up space, and then getting rid of those games can become a pain because no one wants em lol. The key to enjoying collecting imo, is to just pick up the stuff you wanna play.

As a guy who buys retro games and technology I get frustrated with the asking price of some items by eBay sellers. Sometimes those items, like an Anime DVD or a Sony Vaio aren’t rare. There are several options, but they are all asking way too much. I’m not expecting you to do the effort of putting up for sale only to get next to nothing. But, if you want $400.00 for a 10 year old laptop or $50.00 for a DVD (that nobody buys anymore), that’s too much.

I'm already ramping down my own collecting, and part of it's because it's getting increasingly difficult to: 1. Find copies of certain games in nice condition 2. Find sellers who are honest about the condition of the games they sell At this point, I'm focused only on buying at swap meets. Prices are pretty good (a lot of people are now pricing right at Pricecharting, as opposed to a couple years ago where it felt like everyone was pricing over) and I can see the condition of everything on the spot. Prices have always been kind of a disappointing, but I also consider how much these games cost new and see that many enjoyable games out there are still below the MSRP of when they released--even figuring for inflation. I don't put much stock into the fun of collecting. In fact, I see collecting as acquisition, which feels like a burden when trying to get a good deal for something in nice shape. Swap meets are fun though--a lot of good people who love games and are down to talk games. Once it is sold at that price, do you think greedy collectors or resellers want to drop their price? That is why I don't see the price drop unless the economy is in dire straits and it forces people to sell their stuff for cheap. I remember back in like 2010 dropping $100 on a box of Saturn and Snes titles, stuff like CIB Chrono Trigger and Dragon Force among other notable titles. Collecting was great when it wasnt considered 'cool' and before resellers started treating it as a job.

I shifted My focus on primarily PS3 games this year but they too are starting to creep up in prices. I even managed to score a few good deals on other PlayStation systems for 1 2 and 4 and 5 and even psp but it is becoming to much of a hassle to collect like everywhere there are people overcharging and use price chart etc it has ruined the collectors spirit and most modern games have so many issues they are just not worth playing. I focused on the 3 mostly as large portion of those games were still cheap below 50 euros but that window is coming to an end as even they are starting to rise and with the 20th anniversary you know resellers and scalpers will take advantage of the next nostalgia wave. At least i managed to get majority of the games i wanted and il still look out for a good deal/opportunity but i am hanging it up after the year is over as a full blown search.
@UnnecessaryRambling3 ай бұрын
I think that mindset of just collecting when you find a good deal, but not obsessing over the hunt sounds like the healthiest way to go about collecting.
@Rapnvideogames3 ай бұрын
I never pay inflated prices. For example I genuinely want to play Eternal Darkness on GC but unless it comes way down or available some other way, I won’t play it. I’m cheap, I love being cheap.. I have a nice collection but I only go for the deals. Same thing with new games.. $69? Yeah no thank you.. I’m always on the look out for digital sales or preowned selling for cheap
@FoldingChairJonson2 ай бұрын
Oh the retro video game saturation has been happening for years. My issue is you just get tired of going on a game hunt driving for hours, garage sales/estates and finding nothing or garbage table scrap games. Heck even the action figure and antique sellers are diving in. Ive been collecting and reselling vintage games since 2005. I dont do it anymore because everyone thinks games are low hanging fruit and to make a quick buck. Its pretty bad. If you are getting into the retro market now its terrible time, or if you have unlimited money its fine.

Yeah, I'm not collecting anything retro anymore, I actually sold my PC Engine Duo with a few games few years back, I sold some 32X games as well and I might sell more old systems. The prices are just insane lately, even the PS Vita which is not retro, some of the games are crazy expensive and I'm embarrassed to say that I've paid $220 for the "Back in 1995" Limited Edition about an year ago (although after a quick search, that game hasn't gone down in price yet). PS Vita is or maybe was(?) my favorite system to collect, but I have not got anything new for the Vita in 6 months or so. On a side note, I noticed you have the old Resident Evil action figures on your top shelf, I also have those😁.

I’ve never owned a Vita, but I’ve thought about picking one up so many times. Are vita game prices reasonable, or have they gone through the roof as well? & dude I love those RE figures, a few I bought are smoke stained yellow, but I got a decent deal on em. Really want the MGS1 figures as well… but I also wanna pay my mortgage 🤣
@Jocaju33 ай бұрын
@@UnnecessaryRambling With Vita, you can find a lot of good games on the range $25-50 and usually anything bellow $20 are probably Lego and sport games. If you are going for the heavy hitters of the system like Uncharted, Killzone, Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice and many others, they'll probably be between $50-100. Above $100 are the more unique and often low print copies. These ranges could actually be off now though, because 4 years ago a game like Danganronpa V3 were actually $130+, now after doing a quick check you can actually buy for $60. I also noticed a price drop on Silent Hill, few years back the cheapest you could find was $110, now you can find for $80 and maybe even less. Good to know some of the prices has gone down.

We're still waiting on Bayonetta 1,2,3 Pikmin 1,2,3 + 4 Advanced Wars Reboot Camp 1+2 Luigi's Mansion 2 Thousand Year door Metroid Prime remastered 3d all stars Xenoblade 1,2,3 Mario Kart 8 Diablo 3 Final Fantasy 1-12 + a bunch of Sqaure Enix titles I buy more demanding games on my pc The only games I buy for my series X are the cheap $5-20 xbox one game & a few backward compatible games like SSX 3. I keep my 3ds around just for Pokemon titles gen 1,2,3,4,5,6, & 7 The only games I feel the need to collect are the ones that are trapt on the gamecube, gba, ds, & wii. ^ We all know the heavy 1st party heavy hitters ^ I pretty much had most of them, but sold them off in 2020 while ithe sellers market was hot The more I look at the retro games... the less I want to bother owning them due to not having the space to house multiple consoles & tv's. The only thing I care about is being able to play old games on a more modern system.

So……………… I just picked up 3DS 😂 I wanted something to play while in bed before going to sleep and cleared all the phone games I find interesting. I didn’t want to fork out and buy a steam deck etc just needed something cheap. I still stand by what I’ve said time and time again that Nintendo handhelds just don’t feel comfortable to hold for me. But there’s so many titles that are stuck on the system that I’ve wanted to try such as Fire Emblem titles and Persona Q. The prices seem to be alright at the moment from stuff I’ve looked at. I don’t care for Pokémon so no £100+ purchases from me I’m afraid EBay sellers 😂 Something I’ll also add I think we as collectors are beginning to run out of space which is a big thing. I’ve finally finished putting all my shelves together and I have one shelf spare. So very soon I may have to re think what I purchase physically 🫣 Love the video though mate keep up the great work 🫡

Collectors complaining about price hikes when they themselves contribute to the increasing scarcity---considering those games will collect dust in their possession and likely never reenter circulation---will never not be tone deaf.
@intellectualninjamonkey249617 күн бұрын
If you think about it, collecting itself is a completly nerdy and useless endeavour. It's not even a hobby, it's just mindless consumerism. The essence is doing something with the actual thing not owning the thing. Imagine someone saying "I collect guitars" . Dude , you COLLECT guitars? Shouldn't you PLAY guitar? You need ONE guitar (the one that is equivelant to your level) and then you suppose to become GOOD in PLAYING the guitar, not own like 30 guitars!

You don’t want mad dash racing. Also, the amount of games produced has nothing to do with the current price. It’s how many people want that game that was mass produced. If there’s more people that want the game then there are games. The games are going to be expensive! I don't recommend anyone go back anymore, simply due to unthinkable re-releases. Turtles in Time, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Earthbound, ect. If it's worth playing, it will be re-released eventually. I have a retro collection simply because I still have most of the games I've bought over the past 20+ years. That's how you get a retro collection :p
@konyption3 ай бұрын
A lot of re-releases have missing features, graphical bugs or worse performance. The gamecube tales of symphonia is still the only one that runs at 60fps, and crystal chronicles is totally different (subjectively in a worse way) with online play instead of local co-op. There are definitely good remasters too, but certain titles the best way to play them is still on original hardware.
