Right before your interview, make sure to turn up the camera when nobody else can see you. Macbooks have photo booth for example. Thank you so much for your content - I watched pretty much everything before having the most unconventional video interview ever yesterday (it wasn't so much an interview, but more an informal chat - I didn't even get the "Tell Me About Yourself"! I did manage to inject a couple of STAR stories though - huge thanks for the advice on those). I sent a follow up email today to thank them for taking the time to talk with me, and literally one minute later, I got a reply to let me know that an offer was coming my way! One thing I would suggest for video interviews where ambient lighting isn't great (it was a short notice interview taking place late afternoon on a dull December day!) - spectacle wearers need to be aware of reflected glare coming from the screen. It was only on testing my camera shortly before the interview that I noticed how distracting it was, so on starting the call, I removed my glasses so my eyes were visible rather than 2 reflections of my screen! Huge thanks once again - your advice has made a world of difference (as well as making me cringe remembering prior interviews where I have been less enlightened!)

I just had my second virtual interview, the first virtual interview was a week ago. I am not sure what the psychology is behind this but I had a hard time switching to what seems to be my professional persona that has always gotten me through in person interviews. The in person interview I actually like more than virtual. I thought being a more reserved person I would appreciate being virtual but I am actually suddenly more out going during a face to face interview. I am unsure how I did on this second interview being in a relaxed environment yet trying to not be too relaxed. If anything it is practice, right?

@@SelfMadeMillennial I have never made a 30-60-90 day plan before (tbh I didn't even know they were an official thing). I have discovered that sometimes they ask for one in the interview process - but even if they don't ask for one, I know this is going to be such a game changer for me when I start my next job - just being intentional about my personal onboarding. I've been researching a lot, based on what they want, my experience that I can bring to make a quick impact but also taking into account the training time that will be required. Obviously every job is different and subjective and so for your audience you probably cant be too specific but what have you seen being really effective in a new starter? Is there anything that you would say is a great power move to "bring it" in your first 90 days?

I had a County government Zoom interview today and the "screensharing" tip DOESN'T WORK AT ALL. I don't know if I was the only one but when I asked "can I share my screen to show my previous work and walk you through it?" One of the panel interviewers completely rejected me and said "why don't you explain it to me verbally". What I want to show is a previous research poster and I have already sent it to HR before my interview because they requested me to do so. I was SHOCKED. I asked again, saying that it could be easier to understand and visualize, and then that interviewer was reluctant to open the sharing access. The vibe changed after this screensharing thing, and I think I won't get the job...☹
