Some 3,000 Moroccans, binationals included, are estimated to be fighting for jihadist organisations. When it comes to its homeland security, Morocco leaves nothing to chance. Following the deadly Casablanca attacks of 2003, the authorities have fine-tuned their expertise in fighting terrorism and radicalism. How have they managed it?
Moroccan intelligence services are particularly active in their fight against terrorism overseas. The kingdom carefully monitors jihadist groups which might harbour binational citizens, such as Moroccans living in Belgium. In fact, Moroccan intelligence helped France locate Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the organiser of last November’s Paris attacks.
When it comes to its homeland security, Morocco leaves nothing to chance. Following the Casablanca attacks in 2003, in which 45 people died, the authorities fine-tuned their expertise in fighting terrorism and radicalism.
As a tourist destination, Morocco cultivates an image of freedom and tolerance. And yet a tide of conservatism swept through the kingdom a few months ago, raising fears of rampant radicalisation throughout society.
