There is one thing that one has to remember when it comes to background noise: removing it completely in edit can bring the noise levels to be more audible. We react to change in noise more than to the noise itself. This is one good reason why to minimize it in recording as you can't really do anything about it in post and it makes editing a pain. Most often what we use is to take a noise sample, a piece of clip where no one talks, no sound is heard. We get the exact same background noise that is going to be present in the material, then use that noise sample to fill out all gaps in audio edit. Shotgun mic has a narrow "beam", it is not good for groups of people... We either need several of the, several lavaliers or one omnidirectional mic.. Omnis are the cheapest, WM61-A capsule is about 3$ and is easily good enough (it's used in measurement mics too, ECM-8000 for ex uses it's predecessor, WM60A....). omnidirectional mics captures all the sound in the room, it is a tradeoff but it will also pick a group of people in a very natural way. Interview handheld mics are often omnis so the interviewer doesn't have to keep pointing towards the mouth of whoever talks. Distance is The Key making omnis work, they capture everything around them...

i don't get why people care about sound quality so much. imo ambient noise is not an issue at all. because some idiots might get so extreme into completely muffling any ambient sound that they'll use the shotgun microphone right at their mouth. it makes it so uncomfortable listening to someone as they're whispering into your ear. ambient sound makes it more of a relaxed atmosphere so don't get too extreme into your sound quality, content is where it matters the most :D

In many cases the ambient noise makes it harder to understand what the person is saying. Plus after amplifying your audio to where you want it the ambient noise can get much worse. It also makes volume auto adjustments sound very bad.

I just had to solder a power supply (using a 3.7v 18650 cell) for an old PC headset to be able to run it directly into an audio mixer. Luckily it did not go BOOM on me. It actually works. But having a more professional solution would be much appreciated as right now there is an open circuit lying beneath my desk and if I ever drop something on it, there is a chance the 18650 will blow up and burn my place to the ground. So please save me and send me one of your free RØDE microphones.

-10 dB attenuator (or pad) is usually used when capturing a source that is particularly loud by default, not really wanting to capture reflections around the room if you were to reduce the loudness by stepping back a bit from the source. A good example is if you were to record drums with a condenser microphone: the mics output is pretty high and you still want to stay close to the source to avoid reflections and bleed from other drum kit components, so you put the attenuator on and you have more headroom when recording (instead of keeping the gain at minimum on your ad converters amplifier)

Électro-Bidouilleur db is not necessarily a power measurement. In can be used to define volts, amps, power or whatever. If the reference is unnamed as it is here, you need to know the implied reference. dbv or dbmv would be voltage. dbw or dbmw would be power etc. Also 20db means a gain of 100, and if you are talking about power that can be realized by changes in voltage, current, or both. So 100 * the voltage could be accurate if the current doesn't change.
