I believe I know why the voice is different. In the movie, when ED-209 is saying "You are in direct violation of Penal Code 1.13, Section 9. You now have 5 seconds to comply." Kinney and the other board room members begin panicking to get out of his line of fire, which is why I also believe NECA got rid of that clip entirely in their ED-209. I believe they tried to re-dub him so they can get rid of those noises, and they re-dubbed the other sound clips just so the voice is consistent. That being said, a little more effort could have gone into making the voice sound more like ED-209.

Agreed. Neither of them sound 100% like the movie, but yes I'm sure that there was no way for them to single out ED-209's voice from the rest of the audio track from the movie. I doubt that anybody even still has the original voice recordings and if they do still exist, God knows where they could be. So I applaud them for at least attempting to do what they could to include such an iconic part of the film. This will just give us another reason to purchase another more accurate figure a few years from now!!

To put the price into perspective, this thing costs more than a Playstation 4. For that price, it REALLY should be perfect. It's easy to lose perspective on just how much these hot toys figures cost.

The_Doctors_Tardis I have to agree. Only because this isn't a computer that we're talking about and a PS4 is a computer so it will have glitches but this doesn't have to. I say they had issues with the licensing, they could've easily requested permission or paid for licensing for the voice clips from MGM. I think the real reason that it doesn't sound like the movie is maybe because they were unable to get permission or purchase the licensing for the voice clips. Another rational explanation could be inclusive to the former, meaning that if they would've gotten the licensing to the voice clips, it may have made the cost higher for the figure.

Since they did get the sound effects directly from the movie, I don't think they were able to filter the background sound of the people yelling and crying so they had to recreate it. I agree that adding the extra delay between 2 and 1 was probably added for effect but it was totally unnecessary. Still a bit pricey but I is a nice addition to someones collection. I will probably buy it.

Keep things in mind...this is a $400 figure and the NECA one was like $60. I don't think it's fair to really compare to the two when they're both two totally different prices and are marketed towards different people.

i totally understand what you are saying,but i do feel like neca is sometimes trying to cash-in on things,like they released their ed 209 what,a couple months before this came out? because they know no one or less people would buy it and just go for the hot toys one,im still on the fence of getting the neca 1:4 batman arkham origins batman,so if you ever decide to get that,please review !

RmforeverTv Well they're both trying to cash in on the release of the new Robocop movie. So i can't really fault NECA. That said, NECA has been trying to make this figure for years. I've talked with their product developer many times and this is a labor of love for him. The problem is, as a toy company that works with retailers, it was very difficult to get made. It's still very difficult for them to have made ED-209. Retailers didn't want to pick him up. He was too expensive and the box is a considerably large foot print on their shelves. So they rejected it. Which is why it's not in retail stores. The ONLY reason it got made was because of the support of online retailers as well as small brick and mortar stores. They didn't make theirs to compete with the Hot Toys one. Theirs is much more affordable. Hot Toys is a much higher and much more expensive level of collecting. MOST collectors are perfectly fine with the NECA version.

Awesome review! You got yours so fast, lol us east coasters have to suffer a grueling wait of a couple more days. The obvious dubbing over the original voice truly does make for a glaring imperfection, of an otherwise perfect figure. Can't wait for mine. Glad you picked him up. Man, all that's left is for them to do Cain. I really hope they do Cain. It's truly my holy grail. :)

About the speech sound clips. I just checked it on my RoboCop blu-ray disc. I think that the sound is actually taken from the movie, BUT had been recorded either at a lower speed as was previously noted in one of the comments below or at another sample rate. And in the movie there IS a slight delay between the "2" and "1" counts which is much more obvious here due to lower speed of recording. Anyhow, I agree that a figure of this price should feature sound clips EXACTLY as they sound in the actual movie.

Awesome figure! I was very inclined to purchase this, but I changed my mind after learning that the dome and rubber wires are prone to cracking. I'd rather save the money and go with the NECA. And at least the NECA has realistic sound effects! But this figure is still visually stunning (at least until it starts cracking) :( Thanks for the review!

There are numbers of ways to repare any cracking if it happens! I have not seen anything that didn’t have a fix that could not be done! Personally I don’t care for the tiny Neca version. Just a matter of what you want!

I own the original version. This one does look a lot better but the dome/head and feet are just not accurate. After some digging, I believe this version was done after the animatronic ED model and not the 1:1 model in the malfunction scene. The animatronic version was slimmer than the 1:1 model, just like this one is.

Hi Paul. Love your reviews, very thorough. I have the Neca and Hot Toys ED-209 and I think the Hot Toys sound recordings are playing slower, which would lower the pitch of the voice (actually Robocop producer Jon Davidson) but being a big fan of the film, the recordings don't have the same tempo from the films. Other than that, the Hot Toys piece is fabulous. Keep up the great work.

First, yes WE have a large package, thanks for noticing. Second I like you have seen the original RoboCop a million times and while I don't think the voice is redone it clearly sounds off. I think it has something to do with how it was compressed to be put on a chip for an adult collectible. Another possibility is that Hot Toys is a company based in Asia, is it possible they used the audio track from the version of the movie released over there?

Wow, that's a great figure but the BAD Voice effects KILL IT! The NECA ED-209 was $60 and the sound effects are PERFECTION especially the voice.

5:04 They couldn't use the actual speech from the movie because most parts of ED-209's speech are interrupted by the screams of panicked OCP executives. ;) A shame that Hot Toys didn't try a better job at finding a good and capable voice actor, especially for such a expensive collectible.

well the voice does not bother me cause when i want a figure i prefer there be no light up or sound gimmicks , but that aside they probably did it cause the movie has not been cleaned up for a very good hd quality maybe it would have sounded more muffled if they added it.

I think the designers and fabricators factored stiffness into it's articulation for purposes posing the semi-permenant display model/toy without extra assistance like string or supports and braces.

I agree with you on the sounds, it is a bit different. but a lot of that is licensing, and if the voice actor didn't sign on it, they can't use their voice. chances are that's why they didn't use the actual voice

I've got the original ED 209 release, and it looks like the new warning labels are just mispelled. I'm still happy with the one I've got, I just kinda wish I could swap out the old legs with the new ones. Any idea how close the two versions are scale wise?

You're easy to impress !. LoL How is the rubber doom doing after 6 Years !? I have 3 Older blue and 4 New types .All 3 older are cracked and 2 of the new ones .I bought replacement domes . Lots of people sold the older version cheap ,because of the faulty doom .( around 250€ each ) The Neca one, the other hand No problem at all ,and they are only 50 € also more playable and fun :-) Does anyone build a life-size version ? Hey Paul, I just ordered this and the diecast Robocop w/chair from BBTS, but, I saw on your Robocop video, that your ED-209 dome rubber has cracked. I was wondering if Hot Toys ever offered a replacement dome or a solution to the rubber cracking? I'm worried that mine will be cracked out of the box, since these are about 2+ years old at this point. Thanks in advance if you answer and keep up the great work!

I bought the ED209 in September this year (2016) and mine was not only fine out of the box, but three months later doesn't show any sign whatsoever of cracking.

Yeah that voice is definitely not right and has a slight British tone at the end of each sentence. And those legs are hard to remove to put back in the box. I'm glad I didn't get this. Also if you lose that remote or it breaks down how do you get the talking features to work.

It sounds like the sounds are played slower, for example instead of played at 1x it's played at 0,7x, maybe that's why the voice sounds deeper and the pause is longer. I'm guessing, it's an idea... but I don't know how could you fix it.

It's certainly possible that's what they did. It might also help circumvent getting the licensing rights for the official sounds. I don't know how that works entirely.

***** I just watched the boardroom scene here on KZbin as a comparison, and that's very much what it sounds like they did. The speech clips have been slowed down. You can tell by the tone/note that he's speaking in on this toy vs. the actual movie scene. So while it's great and all that they may very well be the "authentic" voice clips, it doesn't matter because the end result is that they sound totally off and wrong which is unfortunate.

I don't think that's what happened. There's no need for it. It's an officially licensed product with MGM's logo stamped on the back. They've already done all the legwork required to not have to worry about licensing issues. They re-recorded it most likely because the audio of ED-209 as it's featured in the film is useless. And considering all the turmoil that MGM has been through lately, it's pretty much a guarantee that all that remains of their older movies is complete prints, not individual effects elements. You can't just single out the voice in a complete film like that.

I'll have to double check but I'm pretty sure his lines should be free of other audio getting in the way. It's just with ED you can barely hear what he's saying over the noise of the board members going nuts

Yup. Since i got it a bit early from Sideshow (they sent me one of the very first they got before filling other orders), mine was one of the first to show the cracking of the dome unfortunately

***** Awesome video... Very high quality! Thanks for posting... Received my Hot Toys ED-209 MMS-204 on May 1st. This piece is Kick-Ass!!! Have been waiting 27 years for this. As mentioned, there are a few imperfections. However, (as you state) the positives far outweigh the negatives... Was just having a look at ED-209 in the stairwell in slow-mo... Not once in 27 years and watching RoboCop hundreds of times...have I noticed that ED-209's right cannon has two barrels. This is only depicted at the top of the stairwell after the second time that it put's its toe out searching for something firm to step onto. It's amazing what you can 'catch' in slow-mo.

It sounds like it's being slowed down. I wonder if you can get access to the chip and re-record those sections. Somebody fucked up with this figure - it is a shame that they just closed their eyes. Some paint and stickers should fix that. Besides that - I pity the new gen kids that only get to see the new screen heroes like the new Batman, the new Terminator, the new Spiderman, the new RoboCop.

ok, stupid question of the day lol, ive been collecting things like Neca (i have the spring loaded holster robocop) and others such as star wars six inch and Marvel Select for about 18 months now, But ive been having a discussion with myself over the last week or two, as you do, about whether i should move up to 1/6 scale like Hot Toys, unfortunately due to things like limited display space i cant really do both scales so it would be one or the other, And i just cant decide what to do!, is one Hot Toy better than say 10 Neca's which i think would work out around the same price, i could probably buy 5 or so Hot Toys per year where as so far ive bought around 100 Neca's etc in the 18 months ive been collecting. Are they really much better than Neca etc, and worth what they cost in comparison to smaller figures? Sorry for babbling a bit here, i do that lol

xneverwalkalonex It's not fair comparing NECA figures to Hot Toys. I see a lot of people doing it and i don't think it's really fair. NECA make figures for mass release. They have to stay within certain budgets otherwise stores simply won't carry their product. Hot Toys cost a lot more for a couple reasons. The amount of detail is insane. Better than NECA but again, the price really is a difference here. If you allowed NECA the ability to charge $200 for a figure, i firmly believe that they'd be just as good in terms of detail.

I respectfully disagree, it does have to be perfect, when you are spending that much money on a collectable that sits on your shelf. it's looks great but I am happy with the Neca version I got but still think that version is overpriced as well.

I don't say it should be perfect because in the end, we're all human and mistakes happen. Decisions are made that seem good at the time, but end up not working out.

True but decisions made in the office and the QC issues are to different things. If I did buy this thing I could live with most of the decisions (the mouth, spelling, unless it's that way in the movie for some reason, etc...) but QC issues like paint or damage to the figure for example I would never except.
