Not to be rude, but I saw three differences that you never really mentioned in this video. 1. On Soundwave, the Takara version has a slightly darker Decepticon logo on his chest piece. 2. Ravage's legs have a minor difference in terms of the color. 3. I could see that it is rather unfortunate that the Hasbro's Cassetts were more made for cartoon accuracy, whereas Soundwave in Hasbro looks more like the toy. It is the other way around with the Takara versions. I'd highly recommend to pick up the Hasbro version rather than spend 500 bucks on the Takara exclusive.

Thank you, love these MP reviews. I bought the Takara version and even after your review still stand by that purchase. Like you said, taste for the eyes is personal, I strongly lean toward the cartoon accurate representation. Besides that, I feel that the details (chrome, deeper colours etc.) are more high end than the Hasbro version. I'm not one to waste money but I have no regrets. Great to see someone thinking outside the box and ship you this to review. Big thumbs up!

Overseas, the Hasbro versions are almost impossible to get. Takara versions are much easier to import as Hasbro has a America first, world never attitude.

If Hasbro MP Soundwave had red eyes I would totally buy it but the Takara version just seems better even though it only comes with Laserbeak. But on ebay, I got frenzy and ravage for like $30 and the same goes to rumble and buzzsaw. And i even got a MP Ratbat. hes not really known as a mp toy but he is. I got soundwave for $60 because i bought him off ebay.

I have to say, i am really impress of what Hasbro did to this MP Soundwave, i though they where gonna sell each of the tapes separately like Takara did. Aside of some cosmetic choices (the most noticeable been Soundwave's visor) I think this version is far better than the one that Takara sells only because it brings everything in one go and for a way cheaper price, 2 major things that overshadows the silliness of the visor thing. I wish that from the begining, both the Takara and Hasbro version would have the gimmick visor like the MP Grimlock has that you can change it to red or blue, that way anyone can have it in either red or yellow base on there preference for Soundwave. great review as always optibotimus.

Having just acquired both of these, I can say the difference in the tapes is pretty much that the silver is more shiny on the MP-13 tapes than the MP-02, and most screws are black instead of silver. I also found the MP-02 tapes seemed to be more stiff and fit better with the pile drivers for Rumble and Frezny, while MP-13 had more loose fitting pile drivers. Other than that, pick the one you can afford. I personally have the MP-02 soundwave with the MP-13 tapes on display as everything just poses nicer and I have the cartoon accurate head on Soundwave. Great figure.

Nice video. I was so happy I got this from my local TRU when they started hitting stores. Also, Toyrus didn't do a good job of loading and unloading this figure from there trucks to stores either. At my local TRU, I went threw 4 boxes of this guys, and each box had 2 MP Soundwaves in it, and all 8 had box damage. I was sort of upset but at the end of the day, I was just happy to have the figure.

I don't understand it... they call it a TRU exclusive... but apparently it was SO exclusive they only had it for a limited time? (That's just the feeling I get, I'm not saying that's what they did.) So while Toysrus sold it for a reasonable amount, those who didn't get it in time are stuck dealing with scalpers who'll sell it for half a thousand dollars.

MP's are generally hard to find due to high demand/low supply and unfortunately scalpers are getting to them before the average collector can get to them. I just started collecting. Soundwave is my first and I learned through friends who got me into collecting that the last time an MP came out they sold out fast within a day and where never to be seen again except online for inflated prices. Either you know someone who works at the store who can give you aheads up, a fellow collector that constantly checks or check stores yourself constantly.

TRU in Canada has removed this figure from their online store, which is usually a sign they won't be getting more (either online or in-store). I was unfortunately unable to get one when they were available. Thankfully there are several available locally on Kijiji where the price has only been marked up by $20, so I won't feel too ripped off. I'm hoping to meet a guy tomorrow to get the figure.

So glad I grabbed this one right when it came out instead of opting for the takara like I usually do. It's ridiculous how much more you get for your money and quite a bit less of it. Plus even though it's inaccurate, I kind of like the yellow eyes and have a red decal(reprolabels) I could apply and make them red any time I feel like it.

The blockyness of the figure makes it more easy to make more alternative modes, i make: a base mode, a train mode, a gun/crossbow mode, a sort of scorpion mode, and of course the classic cybertronian streetlight, making him a sort of SevenChanger. Also, the minicons can have alternatives modes to complement all the other modes of Soundwave, like a tank and airship modes to Rumble and Frenzy, a turret and axe mode to Ratpack, a car and crossbow mode to Ravage, and manny more.

Trivia: the Hasbro G1 Transformers toys are canon while the cartoon and comic book versions of the G1 Transformers characters are not canon to their Hasbro toy counterparts. In my honest opinion, the G1 cartoon needs a reboot (Remake) and the characters really do need to be based on their Hasbro G1 toy counterparts and not their TakaraTomy versions. I look forward for the rebooted characters to be played by the Hasbro versions of their Masterpiece counterparts. It makes sense because the Hasbro G1 Autobots and Decepticons had different colored eyes while in the G1 cartoon, all of the Autobots had light blue eyes and all of the Decepticons (Except for Shockwave and Unicron) had red eyes. Characters being played by their Masterpiece counterparts equals no animation errors. Makes sense, right?

I'd still go with the Takara version because i want a cartoon accurate toy, although i know the Hasbro version is value for money choice. Also the takara version has nice chrome paint detail on the cassettes which is a + from the Hasbro version.

I got the the Hasbro version from my local TRU, and although we Brits are being charged a little more (£119 compared to $119 when the currency is 1.6 dollars to the pound)... I'd still say it was a good deal. I had to grab him as soon as I saw him! One issue I would point out is that one of the leg joints is SO tight that moving it really feels like I'm going to break the leg. Is this common for both Takara & Hasbro? Have you heard of any quick fixes?

My TRU never had this guy at all, so I wound up picking him up on ebay for $160 after shipping. Thrilled with the purchase. I'm a huge Soundwave fan and having a representation of his G1 appearance was worth every penny. Thankfully, the yellow eyes don't bother me at all. For someone like me, importing the Takara MP figures is simply out of the question, so waiting for the potential Hasbro release is my only option. Fingers crossed for Sideswipe and Prowl.

When I opened mine there was an unpleasant surprise for me. Rumble or Frenzy was missing a hand. I thought maybe it popped out of the joint but unfortunately the hand is actually held in by a small metal pin. Looks like it was missed in the assembly line and missed by QC :( So I have a handicapped Rumble or frenzy :D I just have to deal with it I guess :S

I don't think, now, the price is something to take care off, i tried looking for the soundwave hasbro with all his cassette and it cost over 200$. I got the Takara one for 140$ (in box never open) and got savage and rumble for 30$ (same price for buzzsaw and frenzy). So almost the same price.

I called TRU several times, they never said they had him in stock, at 2 different ones. I looked online it said available in stores. Obviously, Hasbro didn't want to put these out like Optibotimus said, which makes no accounting, business or economic sense. Anyway, instead of paying scalper prices, which helps no one but the scalper and it encourages scalping that I am stubbornly dead set against encouraging, I picked up the Takara version from Toy Dojo for 140 and KO ravage/jaguar and rumble/frenzy for 25 on eBay. I figure it works out about the same as the sales tax ($9.60 that ToyDojo doesn't have to charge me) the headache, time and petroleum (gas) of driving to TRU and trying to find this guy, which now, is probably never to happen again. Thanks a lot Hasbro you have done it again, you built just enough to have scalpers dishonestly overcharge the actual end user, your customers. Ridiculously dreadful, ugh!

I got my Takara version for under $200 dollars, and even not having the other cassettes does not bother me too much. I may consider getting the TRU one for the other pieces since they are not as important to me honestly. If I couldn't have gotten the Takara version I would have gotten the TRU one to be honest, a third party will make the red eyes fix I bet.

Nice review. Appreciate the review and the side by side comparison on Most of the figures. Even though I paid a lot for the Takara version there are small details that IMHO make the figure better on the Takara version. I ordered the MP Soundwave on TRU.com when it was posted and was able to use a 10% off discount coupon so I got a really good deal on the figure. I will admit if you got the Hasbro version at Retail price, you got a great value considering you get everything in one neat little package. Hasbro did a great job IMHO as well with the packaging of this figure (and for that matter Acid Storm). The only exception is no Ratbat. :( I wasn't going to hedge my bets on a Hasbro release since this is a figure that I've always wanted. I don't feel stupid or feel the Takara version is worthless because of the TRU version myself because I think it has superior paint apps over the Hasbro one. With the Reprolabels coming out, most of those things can be resolved at a fraction of the price. I commend Hasbro for releasing this figure in the states. I don't think the MP cars will come out here just because of the expensive automobile licensing it would take to do so. If for some reason they do bring them to the states....I can see them being 2 packs or even 3 packs, but I am pretty sure the paint apps will not be as good.

I understand it was hard to find at TRU, but I was in Hong Kong back in March 2014, and they had literally tons of them sitting at the TRU. No one seem to be buying them. I am not sure why the supply to the U.S. TRU is so low.

I'm pretty infuriated that the Toys "R" Us near my place decided to cancel Transformers shipments for 2013 due to an apparent "lack of sales" and there's not another Toys "R" Us for 50-60 miles. I just checked the price for this guy on Amazon and Ebay and damn it's tripled the shelf price. In the end I might need to pick up the Takara version since it's about 100$ cheaper even with the massive shipping fee from overseas. The Year of the Goat one is nice, but it's just not the same.

Actually, the colors of Rumble and Frenzy are less of a Takara/Hasbro thing and more of a continuity thing. In some continuities (G1 cartoon continuity and Aligned continuity [as in WFC/FOC and Prime]), it's FIRRIB (Frenzy is Red, Rumble is Blue, for those who don't know the acronym), though in most others, it's FIBRIR (Frenzy is Blue, Rumble is Red). Confusingly, though, the IDW comics repeatedly switch back and forth, even under the same creative team in the same ongoing series.

***** Just in case my other reply didn't actually send (I can't see it in the comments here, so it might not have sent), in the original cartoon, the colors were supposed to be unchanged from the toys and Marvel comics where Rumble was red and Frenzy was blue, as evidenced in the cartoon's production bible, which identifies Rumble as "the red robot". However, due to some unspecified error somewhere in production, the colors were swapped, and now their is "debate" about whether FIRRIB or FIBRIR is correct.
