As much as I don't like the Galaxy, that was not a hand ball as it looks like it hits his chest mostly. That fight in Seattle was intense, the stadium was going insane! I am shocked no reds were given during the game

Yes, and PRO issued a statement explaining it. Initial review had narrow clips that did not show the defender on the goal line. Once VAR got a new shot from a wider angle, the could see near side defender was on the goal line, thus there were actually 2 opponents nearer the goal line than the attacker, therefore he was not in an offside position

The Sounders wish there had been someone to overrule Daniel Radford on multiple occasions. I don't understand how the guy is still an MLS official, and the only reason he's a VAR official is because he couldn't cut it as a CR. (Also: this is the first time Christina has ever heard "handbags" in soccer? Really?)

watching it back 30 on chicago is not letting Brenner come back onside. Kind of tough to call that one interference, especially considering how close the strike was to the GK anyway - he was never saving that. Bailed out.

I am very confused about the Sounders game. I would assume that kicking a goalie twice when the ball is secured should count as violent conduct and endangering the safety of an opponent. The kicks were not full force but there was no reason to kick out and I thought keepers are supposed to protected.

Certainly a foul but most fouls like this are only given a yellow. As you said, it lacked force and VAR didn’t see a clear and obvious red card in that.

To be fair, while the monitor was glitching, he did get several static views. The more important thing is that under the IFAB VAR protocol, the referee can always take advice from the VAR without going to the monitor, just like he does from an AR on the line or the 4th official. There were one or two times this happened last season, too, and PRO explained how they handle it. Going to the monitor for offside decisions is largely performative, designed to sell the call.

@@shamrockshawtty The monitor momentarily worked several times, and he wasn't acting - he was waiting for the glitch to resolve, much like I do when my wifi gets laggy. He was also talking to the VAR over comms getting a description of what the VAR was trying to show him.

@@johnmcgimpsey1825 well the monitor is not just to sell the call. Now I’m not a pro ref, but I do town/club refereeing in my area. Personally, I wouldn’t want someone to just say to reverse the call without me seeing it, say if I had VAR or someone to directly talk to. Just my opinion though

@@attktitan6057 If you do town/club refereeing, do you take the word of your AR when they determine that an offside offense occurred? There's really no difference in taking VAR's word for it for the majority of offside decisions (i.e., whether the player was in an offside position when the ball was last played or touched by a teammate), so in those cases going to the monitor is performative, but players and fans in MLS expect it. Some leagues don't have the referee go to the monitor in those situations since it simply delays the game further. Obviously the exceptions will be if there's a less objective judgment call to make, but even then there's no IFAB requirement to go to the monitor if the VAR can describe the clear obvious error to the referee's satisfaction over comms.

Guzan could see the ball, so his line of sight was not interfered with, especially since Portland’s striker wasn’t offside. Their Toronto take I have to agree with, but a second thing I’m wondering was if Callender would have been able to dive if that TFC player wasn’t on the line. Lastly, Bou looked offside from the lines on the field.

The issue with the Galaxy Handball goal has everything to do with the ref making that call in the first place. Should not have called anything and let VAR handle it

That's a complete misunderstanding of how the system works. VAR does not referee the game. VAR is a backstop for obvious mistakes. It depends on cameras. It cannot take into account the view the referee had. We don't want calls not whistled on the field hoping that VAR might have a better angle. What would you have said if there wasn't a clear angle showing it one way or the other but the referee didn't blow the whistle for something he really saw as a handball? I certainly don't want that.

@@choduffield The ref should not have called it because he didn’t have a good enough view of the play to even make that call. He was a good 25yards behind the play. How can he be sooo sure that it was a hand ball? When defenders use their hands in the box refs will almost always use VAR to call a pen, same should be applied to offense just like offside goals

I’m so confused about the Philly match. Wasn’t Glenese pushed from behind with an elbow to start this score…. It ultimately put Offur in this position he was in. Think the ref got this wrong. The offside position is irrelevant.

Looks to me like Glenese lost Offur momentarily, then tried to get back in position to block him out. The contact was shoulder-to-shoulder and Offur was just a bit stronger than Glenese (or maybe their feet got tangled while both are clearly focused on the ball). But I don't see any signs of a foul. This sort of contact happens pretty frequently and imo football doesn't expect a call here (for that matter - Glenese didn't appear to complain to the referee who was 2 yards away after the goal was scored).

Let's be real. How often do you think keepers truly play the book and stay perfectly on their line on PKs. I remember the last big time this happened in MLS in an Orlando playoff game a couple years ago. And the narrative at the time was, its a stupid call, because its rarely enforced.

They didn't agree that the Galaxy handball was correct. They believe it was likely not a handball, but the wasn't that smoking gun camera shot to say VAR should have recommended review outright.

They're using a bit of shorthand to describe what Law 11 says is interfering with an opponent by a player in an offside position by "(1) preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or (2) challenging an opponent for the ball or (3) clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or (4) making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball".

And where does it say that? The referee can change a call until the play has been restarted. Additional/missed information was found before the restart. Bad job in not seeing it first go-round, but great job getting it right in the end. All with the laws.
