Newly released body camera footage from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office shows the aftermath of the deadly “Rust” movie set shooting involving Alec Baldwin.
Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died in the Oct. 21 shooting on the New Mexico movie set and director Joel Souza was injured. Baldwin claims he was told the gun was not loaded and only held dummy rounds after a crew member yelled out “cold gun.” The fatal shooting is under investigation.

@@ZENMASTERME1 I'm still unpicking that, to be honest Baldwin admitted in his police interview that he was offered to check the firearm, and declined. As I understand it, that's a break in protocol. He might not have put the live round in the chamber, but if the gun was supposed to be empty, he is obliged by protocol to witness that it is empty, and he didn't. That's negligence. And this is where we get into conflicting statements, because in that interview he said there wasn't supposed to be anything in the revolver, no dummies, blanks, nothing, he was very clear on it But in the TV interview I think he said they were dummies. Even if he has a responsibility to check, it's up to the armourer to load the weapon with what it's supposed to be loaded with. It's up to the armourer to know the differences between different types of ammunition and how to distinguish, and to store everything securely so it can't be tampered with. It would seem Hannah G-R failed in this. So to me that makes both Baldwin and Hannah equally liable. And if it was Halls who handed Baldwin the revolver, then it's on Halls as well. If some other crew member was doing target practice with the weapon between scenes, they're liable too. But then there's the caveat that Baldwin is also the producer. I don't know to what extent he was responsible for hiring incompetent people, and I don't know to what extent he's responsible for on-set safety. So yeah, based on the available evidence, it seems to me he's _at least_ as liable as everyone else, possibly more.

However he is liable likely because he was a producer and had a role in who was hired and who was following protocol. They literally knew they had live bullets and had 3 accidental shootings on set before that. There’s no excuse. The AD gave a live gun accidentally on set 3 years ago. Negligence all around. Ridiculous. But that also makes it hard to blame one person. The armorer was shooting the guns during lunch. Both of them are the 2 most to blame though. I can’t believe Alec doesn’t feel bad about his role. It’s not normal.

@@rhuckabee44 No, he is very likely liable. In another interview of armorer he stated that one of first rule of acting with a firearm is NEVER point it at crew unless you intend to pull the trigger. He also said he never pulled the trigger, but everyone knows this is a lie. It's not possible for a non-defective firearm to fire in the way he said it was. You can even see in the footage before the shooting that does have his finger on the trigger. Unless you can come up with a justifiable reason to need to point that gun at crew and pull the trigger, then Alec is responsible for his actions. Now I also think the AD is responsible too, but I find it harder to blame the armorer. Sure if you can prove that she is the reason live rounds were on set without approval, then yeah she is responsible too. But 1. it doesn't mean Alec and the AD aren't also responsible, and 2. I haven't seen anything concrete confirming she is the reason the bullets were on set. So Alec lied about the story, shifting blame, and yet doesn't have a justifiable reason to have pulled the trigger while pointing it at others. It's extremely common practice for shots involving firearms that the firearms are pointed slightly off center to avoid pointing it directly at someone, even big Hollywood movies like John Wick do this. And if you do need to get a shot that points it in the direction of the camera, then use remote filming or other equipment to have the camera person not in the line of fire. Sure it's expensive to get this kind of stuff, but low budget doesn't give people the excuse to put people's lives in danger.

@@MattHelmSA Yea its sort of miscommunication on this. We have gun owners (most know the real issues) and Hollywood people and then non hollywood non gun owners that are clueless. The people totally in the right are the gun owners. They know how it should be. Then you have hollywood people that think their rules supersede gun safety 101. Trying to remove actors from liability. My point of view is the actors must be included in the chain of safety. Removing them removes a layer of protection. Yes I realize they are not experts but if they can learn weeks of lines, ride horse, do kung foo for months and months (John Wick) then they can learn to open a chamber and look. I can teach a 10 year old how to do it in 5 minutes. Its not that hard and in this case if Alec bothered to even look at HALs checking the gun he would have seen live rounds. The only argument against this was by Baldwin. He said "If I checked the gun they would have to re check it" And I'm thinking when he said that WOW did he really just say that. God forbid they had to recheck a gun to save a life. Does it have a primer Y/N? - IF Yes it better be a blank Does it have a bullet Y/N? - If yes it better rattle and not have a Primer (Two things and they missed both) If the scene calls for dummy rounds - Always Dry fire to prove it and in front of the person that will use it. Time and cutting corners was #1 on that set. I agree she failed but she was set up to fail. Being so young they did not seem to respect her position or even show up for training. Why else would Baldwin shoot a scene without her there. The best armorer in the world can't help in a scene if they are not told its taking place. Alec did not seem to ask for her. Skipped cross draw training and did scene without her. They had a chance to hire a more experienced gun safety crew but they did not want to pay for the extra hand that was required. Cutting corners. No respect for firearms.

We are told that these takes were filmed moments before the shooting. Baldwin is using a single action revolver in the practice scenes. In every take he is seen with his finger on the trigger as he pulls back the hammer and releases it. The hammer only can come fully forward to strike the primer on the bullet if the the trigger is fully engaged and hammer is fully pulled back. It is apparent that Baldwin does this on each take. He even said that he was told to do that in an interview. Now, the revolver can hold six rounds (bullets), We see three takes. If the takes that we see are consecutive then there should be three chambers left. So prior to the fateful shot either Baldwin handed that pistol back to someone to be loaded for the scene or he held onto the pistol thinking that it was empty. I go with the latter. All of the chambers have to be cleared one by one on this type of pistol before handing it to Baldwin. Apparently, who ever cleared this pistol missed a chamber. Just my 2 cents.

@@bwn60 A single-action revolver with the old style firing mechanism can fire without either the hammer being cocked or the trigger being pulled. When the hammer is down on that kind of revolver, the firing pin sticks out and, if a live round is loaded in the chamber underneath, a sharp enough jolt can cause the pin to strike the round’s primer with enough force to set it off. That’s why You carry an old-style single-action revolver,with the chamber left underneath the hammer unloaded. That way, a jolt can’t unintentionally set off a round. Played backed at 1/4 speed it appears the cylinder is rotating clockwise from the shooter's perspective on each practice draw. This is indicative of the hammer being cocked and subsequently released on each draw. Draws 1, 2, and 3 appear to be separate and unique, while draws 4 and 5 appear to be replays of draw number 3. With that in mind, the live round would have been in the 4th chamber past the chamber which is intentionally left empty for safety against accidental discharge from a hammer strike if the firearm is dropped. One more, or one less, practice draw and the outcome could have been completely different; possibly someone else or no one else would have been killed or injured! The subtle minutiae of the combined circumstances inevitably led to this most tragic of outcomes.

I feel Dan Abrams is a little biased for Baldwin. Notice how he never brings up the obvious point of the video. Not only was his finger on the TRIGGER but if you watch he thumbs the Hammer down (the gun twitches) and his thumb ends up on left side of gun. This would have set off a live round. He most likely practiced that draw and trigger pull+ thumb hammer drop for the scene. A few takes later he hit the live round. In order to set off blank rounds he would needed to practice that as well or they would never go off for the desired effect. Drawing the gun and not having the finger on the trigger would not look realistic.

I'm a former professional-registered-licensed pyrotechnician and for a time, I traveled across North America doing pyro for the (then) WWF and I had dangerous chemicals stored in a locked vault that traveled with me. I was 100% responsible for what was in that safe. At no times did anyone ever come near it when it was open. An armorer has an even more responsible position and for her to claim that she didn't know how live rounds got into that safe is a complete dereliction of duty and more significantly, in my option, an outright lie. NO ONE other than her should have had access to that box. She is guilt and the first assistant director is also guilty (of telling Baldwin that the gun was “cold”).

If he had rehearsed pulling the gun the way one is required to, without his finger on the trigger, and if he had done what one is required to do when handed a gun, open the breach and eyeball the chamber, then the round would have been discovered. The rule of thumb is that one always eyeballs the gun ones self. You always treat it as if it is loaded and ready to fire until you have opened it and seen inside for yourself. And finally, in all circumstances, you always point a gun in a safe downrange direction where a bullit can go and do no harm to anyone or anything if it happens to go off or is fired on purpose. In a film that would require a bit of camera trickery to make it appear as if the gun is aimed at someone but in fact never, ever is. These are the fundamental, basic, baby step very first intial rules anyone and everyone is taught before ever touching a gun. And even then, first, you get to hold one made out of wood or in some form that is in no way capable of having a round in it.

If you watch the video of him practicing you can slow the video down and see him pull the trigger back with his thumb releasing it while his fingers on the trigger. Single action revolvers if you hold the trigger back while pulling the hammer back and letting go of it it will go off. This is common with a single action revolver.

Anything else, you can do with non-firing replicas or stunt props. Hell, they even use airsoft guns these days. All I'm saying is, I don't know if safety screens were required for whatever this was being filmed

Adam, Standard is 1 inch Lexan safety glass and it will stop a bullet. Rehearsal never use real gun. I sat behind camera for 20 plus years , nobody ever pointed a real weapon at me Even with safety glass. Cameras would be “locked off” and /or controlled remotely. Standard safety protocols

I noticed his finger was on the trigger in every shot and no fire. But miraculously when she was in front of it it fired with his finger off the trigger. it still stumps me why there is no video of the actual shooting since she was supposedly filming. This whole thing makes no sense unless it was planned ahead of time. Which opens another question, what reason could someone have for wanting her dead and why haven't the police investigated this angle. I'm sure there is motive somewhere.

HE HAD HIS FINGER INSIDE THE TRIGGER GUARD, WHERE IT HAD NO BUSINESS BEING. This is nearer proof the trigger WAS pulled by Baldwin. A possible scenario is that in demonstrating the hammer positions to the cinematographer Baldwin kept his finger depressed on the trigger against the grip. ON the trigger inside the guard. This means that by resting his finger in the squeezed trigger position when he pulled the hammer back, and then released the hammer with his thumb he would have discharged the weapon. He should have kept his finger away from the trigger, although then the hammer would not release. There were reports there were actual guns on the set, where they had no business being. Target shooting and drinking with a big star and young females on point and other people in the set.

The crew were firing live rounds out of the same gun on their lunch break whoever didn't disclose that, that indeed shot the gun should be charged because that's how the live round in the gun wound up on scene with Baldwin. Notice in the rehearsals he keeps his finger on the trigger? well to fire that weapon we now know the gun has to be cocked and trigger pulled, however if your finger is already on the trigger the cocking and release fires the gun, multiple mistakes here but Baldwin is full of chite saying he didn't have his finger on the trigger when in rehearsals he clearly did.

On any single action revolver hammer should lock back and stay back until you pull the trigger. However if you depressed to trigger while pulling the hammer back the hammer will not stay back and will release striking the firing pin keeping the trigger depressed.. this is common with all single action revolvers. This action is how gunfighters fan a gun by holding the trigger back while fanning the hammer the gun will fire in repetition every time you do it.

Because it's not "his job" to make sure it's safe (according to him) and also because in movies it is often common practice to use dummies that look real but maybe have something about them that feels different from live ammo. But each cartridge would have to be checked. He probably wouldn't have checked anyway.

Professional cameras do not always record audio onto tape. Many times a separate tape machine is used so the boom operator can be free from camera position as well as recording on a better medium and we’re stable medium and the video tape or chip in the camera. camera and sound, are two different departments unprofessional sets

OG Ghost, Recording sounds to what device? Sound is usually recorded on a separate deck. Microphones go into pre-amps, then into a field recorder. That is why they use slates with time code and call “marker”. And Mark it. To sync the recorded sound in post. Camera could also record sound, but on bigger shows sound always on a separate deck.

OG Ghost, Cost a lot of money to sync up sound so that is probably why they didn’t include transferring the sound from the deck to the camera tape it is done way later in post production machines that rent for $1200 an hour

The armourer is the only person permitted to hand the gun to the actor. But she didn't, she was outside. The gun is to be checked at table, and again to hand it over, then actor is to check the gun, he didn't. At no time a gun is permitted to be pointed at anyone, Baldwin did. Claims he didn't pull the trigger, it just went off, but obviously he did. Other cast and crew were feed up with the lack of safety protocols on the set for weeks leading up to this "murder", and walked off the job immediately following the murder. GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY.. multiple persons handled the gun and ammunition prior to, and when police arrived. As shown on police body camera, and gun was removed from crime scene by crew... A husband and little boy now without wife, and mother.. because government laws and protocols were NOT followed, and Baldwin taking NO responsibility. Blaming everyone else, yet he's a producer, to make sure rules are followed. But he didn't !!!

Guess he can't lie anymore about not having his finger on the trigger. Had he been familiar with a single action revolver he would have known not to let go of the cocked hammer with your finger on the trigger. You let the hammer down slowly with your thumb until it stops in the safety notch. It doesn't look good for the armorer either as ultimately it was her responsibility to ensure the gun was safe to use at that time.

Good point! I think that the cylinder (not carriage) is empty in this clip. It def is in another one, but that might be the morning shots. I thought it's the light that makes it look loaded briefly in this one, just a couple flashes and only a couple chambers. But if what you say is true then the hammer isn't even coming back. The indexing bolt completely disengages well before the half cock position and the cylinder rotates one half chamber at half cock. This is so the hammer can be dropped from half cock and land between chambers. I'm going to check this again. Curious why they were shooting in such low light. That church has four big windows on each side and a couple tall ones in front. Dude pulls it FAST! Maybe they wanted the camera to blur it up some? Lighten it up in editing?

At the end of that clip, he performs a trick called "Thumb busting" It allows you to fire your first round faster, because your finger is already on the trigger, with full rearward tension ( all the way back as if you have already fired)., you pull the hammer back as far as it will go, but keep your thumb going bak until it slips off the back of the hammere. Due to the fact that the trigger is in the "already fired" position, there is nothing to stop the hammer from falling all the way closed and striking the primer. By practicing this fast draw with the "thumb bust" this way, he is engraining it into muscle memory. When he made the draw for the " effect shot" on camera, he automatically did it the way he was rehearsing it. This time, instead of a blank or a dummy, it was a live round. This is why there are rules for EVERYONE in the chain of custody to do a complet safety check, including making certain the round are what are supposed to be there.By NOT doing so, and taking someone elses word, you open yourself up to possible charges of negligent homicide or involuntary manslaughter. It could possibly be 2nd or 3rd degree murder, as someone with his years of experience definately know the rules and chose not to follow them.

You don't know much about Colt single action revolvers do you? Releasing the hammer will not make it strike the bullet.....for that to happen it needs to be fully cocked ie four clicks, and then the trigger pulled.

It was not a Brandon Lee thing it is an AB thing , he is a gun expert and has been working with guns for years.It takes you 10 minutes to learn about guns and the colt SAA is one of the simplest to operate.What kind of cold hearted person are you to go around pointing guns at people for many years and not care to learn gun safety?A normal human being would be concerned for others.
