Whoever that crew member was the dude is a rockstar. Definitely needs a raise. Even if he wasn't really strong enough to move a ship that big, just the fact that he went down there to try when everybody else was trying to get away speaks for itself.
@frogandgauge20 күн бұрын
@@carlmontney7916 His actions speak to a lack of awareness and understanding. There was nothing he could have done if the passarelle was going to hit the other yacht - no human has the strength for that. And if the passarelle had hit then it may have collapsed putting him in an extremely dangerous situation. No crew member should be encouraged to put themselves in harms way to protect a yacht. I applaud initiative but his actions had very little affect on the outcome, and really could have got him injured in the process. Boats are insured for exactly this situation.

Why would a research ship turn off the AIS?
@amcconnell673016 күн бұрын
To research how fast the UK and Ireland would respond to having the AIS off. :)
@natcalverley434415 күн бұрын
It wouldn’t.This is the prelude to war . All while the leader of the free world gets is diaper changed and is put down for his nap. Meanwhile the woke US military leaders debate gender politics as real military members leave the service in droves .
@VladimirStepanov-e6h7 күн бұрын
No obligations to keep an AIS on at all.
@natcalverley43447 күн бұрын
@ That is not the issue from a legal standpoint at the end of the day people will do whatever they want. People break laws all the time including captains. From a common sense standpoint your AIS is one of many pieces of saftey equipment that give your crew a higher chance of survival and recovery if your vessel were to suffer a catastrophic event . The AIS data gives search and rescue a starting point . An active AIS also is another aid to navigation enabling other vessels to see you and potentially avoid traffic conflicts. A research vessel would have absolutely no logic reason to silence its AIS . My AIS on my vessel is always transmitting and receiving anytime my vessel is not in port. Admittedly my piss ant 53 foot sailboat is far different than a larger vessel and I keep it on for my personal saftey and that of my vessel as well as other mariners. I am not required by law but am duty bound by common sense. A research vessel has no reason to hide its position. A military , coastguard or police vessel have legitimate reasons to do so. The logical conclusion is that this is more than quote a research vessel.

Berthing and unberthing at FLIBS can be extremely difficult. The current in the ICW can be quite fierce and then add a strong seabreeze and it all gets rather hectic. Have seen many scrapes and bumps, some quite severe, but luckily not involving me. The tug drivers are excellent, but some of the ship handling by Captains can be a bit iffy.

How can a ferry run aground on an outcrop of rock which can be clearly seen in the footage, even in the nighttime! How anyone could fail to observe such a prominent rock structure high above the water is incomprehensible. Their on board navigation system should also have recorded its presence and proximity. This seems such an inexplicable grounding, as the rocks were there to be seen and avoided by any observant bridge crew. Whatever the bridge crew were doing, it wasn't paying attention and conducting a safe passage.
