This movie probably did more to kill off Betamax than VHS ever did.

Great stuff John! I have the chunky Arrow 4K box of this film,. and I love it! One of the better Cronenberg films I've seen. I'm guessing it's probably the same scan/transfer as the Criterion 4K release, considering how expensive the 4K process is. I assumed Arrow and Criterion were just sharing resources.

Thanks Fuzz! Yea it would be pretty silly to run through the whole process twice and I don’t see Cronenberg sitting down with them both times lol. I wanted that Arrow big box and still think that had the better art work.

Do you suffer from 100 gig discs freezing and skipping on your X800? I just bought a panasonic ubp820 for this reason, as my X700 had too many issues and the error correction was poor on discs with minor marks on.

I don’t really ever have any freezing issues. My biggest issue with the X800 is every once in a while it will boot up slow that I need to unplug it and plug it back in. It also for some crazy reason doesn’t work with my Kill bill volume blu rays lol. Honestly you made the right choice with the ubp820. Eventually that’s the route i’ll be going, That player has much more options and really doesn’t have any flaws. We did reviews for both players sometime last year.

@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia thanks. I think it depends which batch of Sony you get. I think the 700 is more of a culprit for struggling with disc errors and triple layer changes than the 800… perhaps it’s to do with heat or the build of the player, as I suspect many of the components will be similar. I bought my Sony X700 and now the new Panny 820 from a specialist retailer in my city (Manchester) here in the UK and they’ve been modded to be multi region for Blu ray. They were familiar with the disc freezes on the Sony models, particularly the 700 when I went in to pick up the Panny 820. I’ve seen more 700 users with the same issues than 800 owners, although I’ve heard plenty of 800 owners reporting them too. It seems like a lottery. The Panny 820 is much better so far and it’s nice it auto enables dolby vision. Ultimately I think some discs still come with scratches on from new and also the smears from the gas used in the cases, requiring a wipe down and no player can avoid this.

I find older movers look terrible on 4K. I saw this and Dawn of the dead on 4K and it’s so clear that it looks like the movie is shot on an iPhone. You can see all the mistakes and squibs and special effects. They look extra fake because of how clear it is. With the grainy vhs/dvd format it hides the mistakes more.

I agree that the 4K definitely exploits the flaws of filmmaking but I also think that it can add new life to a film especially older films. I personally think CGI looks worse in 4k then older practical effects

It depends on how they were filmed. True 35mm or higher that have been restored and scanned can look amazing. I have seen some incredible looking older movies on 4k and think they look better than ever.

That’s exactly how I feel. Older movies just translate better to the format because they are shot on film. Digital cameras allow you to do so much more but you do loose something cinematic about that. Not bad just different.
