I played Donkey Konga a lot as a kid. Playing it the conventional way always annoyed my parents to death, so I figured out how to play it virtually silent. You could just depress both bongo buttons without slapping them, and to clap you'd just lightly tap the side of either bongo. It would produce a sharp enough noise for the inner microphone to interpret it as a clap. As such, the Konga continued on...
@Terracronz Жыл бұрын
I was lucky, we were in our 20s when donkey konga came out and it would be part of the random hangouts with friends. 2 player mode was a huge hit, be as loud as we want. I can’t believe this came out before guitar hero, so good.

Whenever I play Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, this is how I play it. Sure, you can beat on the bongos like they owe you money, but playing it silently is the way to go.

And when there's those parts where you're supposed to clap as much as possible, you can blow air on the mic in between the bongo drums. It would register like 300 claps and I felt like a video game god

If I'm right about this then I'm very glad for the delay because it is abundantly clear from the quality of these videos that they have come from a pure passion and genuine interest in the elusive yet masterfully made series that is Donkey Kong along with its many ventures into the different types of games it has tackled over the years.

Fun Fact: Jungle Beat was the first game the ESRB ever handed an E10+ rating to. Which is completely understandable. This game goes so hard just because it can. Enemies in this game are very scary for small children (mechanized elephants, giant apes with sharp teeth, etc). DK beats the tar out of anything standing in his way. Everyone knows the rapidfire punches, but then there are these bird bosses that carry eggs, and literally the way you deal damage to them is to have DK cling onto the egg and fucking woodpecker it.

In grade 5 they held a Donkey Konga competition at my school, and I had played the game a bunch at home. It was my time to shine. It started as a knockout round in music class and ended up at a whole school assembly for the finals. I remember standing up for the final long purple note in the outro, and slapping the shit out of the bongos. I came 1st. I walked away with a copy of Mario Golf, because the prize was either Mario Golf or Sunshine, and I had already owned Sunshine. I'm now a drummer.

3:56 No way! Jungle Beat even inspired Ecco the Dolphin! Which is impressive since Ecco the Dolphin came out 12 years earlier. Truly remarkable what Bongo Koizumi was able to achieve.

I used to walk to my local Target just to play the Donkey Konga demo. Never had it myself. When they took it away I was devastated. Great times.

I remember loving Jungle Beat immensely. The boss fights were so cool and the high octane energy throughout the missions was dope too. There was even a secret boss after the final Kong you beat that took me like 30 tries to get to. It was hard but overall a fond memory for me.

this game went hard a decade and a half before 'goes hard' was even a term. the bosses, minigames, and even the 'basic' gameplay made you feel like Chuck Norris with how much you destroyed and bent this world to Donkey Kong's whims

It's a crime against humanity that children will no longer experience the anxiety of playing this game at night while also trying not to wake anybody up

For me that was NSMB Wii, my dad is the lightest sleeper on earth and the sound of the Wii even just booting up was enough to wake him

One of the defining games of my childhood

This game was my childhood, my bongos are still somewhere around the house. I beat the game multiple times over just for the boss fights, the banana grabbing in the blacked out screen, smacking the boss like 40-50 times in a row just going ham until my arms were shaking Lmaoo. I will never forget this game thank you for making me feel unalone

no its not, i think its only natural the creators of mario galaxy, mario galaxy 2, 3d land, 3d world, mario odyssey would also go on to create Donkey Kong Jungle Beat ™

I loved jungle beat I actually have a copy in my car that I take with me wherever I go it's the wii version but it still functions all the same, it was a big part of my childhood and oh boy this game just had so much action, that everything you did felt like a really big deal, the boss fights because of this always felt high stakes, life or death. I think that's part of what makes games like these so special. As a kid, just the mystique and stakes of a game carving out a place in your brain and living there I think is what really makes a game an experience and not just a game and donkey Kong jungle beat is just that.

It's a funny thing. A lot of the times people assume that mechanics are specific to a handful of games. The actual fact is in the early days of a game studio, they will often make a few games with varied mechanics to get a few good ideas, feedback, and all that sort of stuff, then they'll just reuse that in a variety of different ways, with different backgrounds, different characters, and these days different animations. Driving for example, games can have the exact same mechanics, as long as they are scalable and allow for slight variation, they can feel fresh in new releases.
