The castle's construction was ordered by the Floris V, Count of Holland in the 13th century. The former County of Holland in the west of The Netherlands was the most well-faring province of the 7 United Provinces/Dutch Republic in 16-17th century and was split up in North- and South Holland provinces in the 19th century.
