These are very interesting fast ferry boats. They were designed by the Boeing Company in the 1970s. Boeing built around 24 of them and then sold the design and tooling to Kawasaki. They built the remaining additional boats. After the initial batch of boats, Boeing built an improved version. These boats are quite fast. They normally run at speeds around 45 knots. (51.8 mph or 83.4 kph) during testing, the first block II Boat reached 52 knots (60 mph or 96.5 kph) and hair more. What makes these boats unique, is they have outstanding maneuverability at speed and can operate in fairly rough ocean waters comfortably at those speeds. They have about a 250 to 350 passenger capacity depending on seating, use a crew of 3 to 6. (Captain and first officer who operate the boat, and 1 to 4 cabin attendants depending on number of passengers and local regulations.) what gives them their high performance is their fully submerged hydrofoil configuration and their computerized control system. The foils are basically wings like you would find on an airplane, but the operate under water. They use their “flaps” located on the back of the foils like the ailerons and elevators of the airplane. The front foil acts like the ‘rudder’ for steering. It rotates sids to side a small amount. When it turns, it turns and banks just like an airplane. This results in a very smooth, comfortable and fast ride for the passengers. And due to the hull being completely out of the water at speed, leaving only a very small wake.

My family and I lived in Manly NSW Australia in the late '70s. Our house was an Australian Army Quarter, on top of North Head. On the weekends, when I was home, I fondly remember the Manly Hydrofoils coming down North Harbor with their diesels roaring and the spray coming off their foils as they transited to Circular Queue.
@MartinAHLoyd2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I remember them too - they were an Italian design, I believe. Back in the 70s I lived over in Mosman, quite near where you were. Sydney also at that time had small hovercraft commuting along the Eastern Suburbs shoreline.. Nowadays the Manly hi-speed route is back to multihulls (still a fast service, but way more reliable than the old Hydrofoils!) along with a modern fleet of more conventional and sedate ferries which, of course, are great for sightseeing.

Many years ago my parents rode the Russian jet hydrofoil from Spain to Africa. Dad had been a test pilot for the Air Force and was pretty aware of the performance of machines. He commented that while the science was sound the vessel was “scary”. And from him that was was a pretty big statement. He described the ship as rattling and flexing to alarming degrees. The sound was also nor reassuring as the turbines would occasionally hiccup and shudder. This ship seems to be a vast improvement over that early example. I think that a hydrofoil ferry between Los Angeles and Catalina Island would be an exciting addition to the West Coast experience if there would be enough tourists making the day trips economically viable. And unfortunately there are migrating whales to contend with; hitting one would be a tragedy.
Very similar to the US Navy s Pegasus-class hydrofoil. The Pegasus-class hydrofoils were a series of fast attack patrol boats employed by the U.S. Navy. They were in service from 1977 through 1993.

"Russian technology developed in the 60s of the 20th century." More Russian disinformation. How quaint. The first evidence of a hydrofoil on a vessel appears on a British patent granted in 1869 to Emmanuel Denis Farcot, a Parisian. A March 1906 Scientific American article by American hydrofoil pioneer William E. Meacham explained the basic principle of hydrofoils. Alexander Graham Bell considered the invention of the hydroplane (now regarded as a distinct type, but also employing lift) a very significant achievement, and after reading the article began to sketch concepts of what is now called a hydrofoil boat. In the early 1950s an English couple built the White Hawk, a jet-powered hydrofoil water craft, in an attempt to beat the absolute water speed record. USS Plainview (AGEH-1) was, in its time, the world's largest hydrofoil.[1] Named for the cities of Plainview, New York and Plainview, Texas.[2] She was also the United States Navy's first hydrofoil research ship. Plainview was designed under project SCB 219;[3] laid down 8 May 1964 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pegasus-class_hydrofoil Given the geography of the South China Sea, I could boats like that come back.
