They may not mind dieing for a photoshot of a tragic scene but the first responders might just want to go home to their loved ones at the end of the day. What is wrong with people? Evansville resident here. There's been a lot of theories thrown around about the cause of the explosion, from gas leak to meth lab. Our primary gas company (Centerpoint) investigated a few days ago, but came up with no public response as to what caused it. It's been amazing to see the community coming together to support the people affected. Our city has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons recently, first the escaped inmate a month or so ago, and now this.

This has GOT to be a gas related problem. My step-sister lived in base housing with her husband and kids in NV and a house down the street from her exploded due to a gas line problem. Just love it when people draw their own conclusions and condemn something without facts. I love the statement about the dangers of gas stoves.Ever heard of the state of California? You know, the state of over 40 million people who have gas in their homes. Have you by any chance heard or read about all of the fires caused by electrical lines? Seen the videos of the absolute fury of entire cities wiped out by electrical fires? The state is literally being burned to the ground caused by electricity. ANY source of power is dangerous and can cause immense damage. I'm sorry for the homes damaged or destroyed and the loss of life here. But next time all you natural gas haters and experts want to condemn a source of reliable energy for more than a century drive on over to my state and travel through the absolute devastation of towns and forests caused by electrical power lines. And there are more homes destroyed by fire from electrical shorts than by natural gas. Also, natural gas has a very strong and easily identifiable odor added to it to make it more noticeable when leaking. This is unlike that wire in the attic shorting out that can go for hours before it erupts into flame. Finally, don't confuse natural gas with propane. Propane is much more dangerous than natural gas because it is heavier than air so it pools up on the ground whereas natural gas is lighter than air and dissipates in the air. Of course if any combustible substance is trapped in an enclosure it is exceedingly combustible. Sorry for being long winded😟 I just get tired of the bum rap this valuable source of energy gets sometimes.🫤

I have an old house with a furnace from the 1940's, but hey, it worked. Then we had a few inches of water in our basement from heavy rains in May and (unbeknownst to me), the water put out my pilot. So from May until November, my furnace pilot line was dumping gas into my basement (since it was summer, we weren't using the furnace). That's how old houses become bombs. Fortunately, my furnace was vented outside so all the gas was just going out into the outside. Needless to say, that old furnace is gone now and replaced with a new one. Of course, I don't know if that's what happened here... but the old stuff sure is dangerous. Especially when the gas meter is located INSIDE the house. RIP to those who passed on.

It is bound to be a gas explosion. The same thing happened here in Christchurch, New Zealand. A tradesman was working on a gas heater and planned to return to finish the job the next day. He didn't disconnect the gas supply to the heater, nor did he tell the homeowners not to use the gas. The house filled with gas overnight and the next day it exploded. Amazingly the 5 people in the house at the time survived, but they were all seriously injured.

If it was a gas leak as many speculate, I experienced such an explosion from about a mile away (as the crow flies) in the 80s. I was inside my house and felt a strong THUMP on the wall. I thought something had crashed into the house! I can’t imagine what it would have been like nearby!

We had this happen in my home town of St Cloud, MN on December 11, 1998. A construction crew accidentally drilled into an underground gas line, it leaked into the basement of an adjoining building, where they believe the furnace set it off. It destroyed several building, killed four people (one woman was struck by an air conditioner while returning to work), and injured eleven others. It shattered windows in buildings for several blocks, and could be heard all over town.

I find it hard to believe this was a home gas leak. The leak necessary to cause that initial force would have been detectable for hundreds of feet in every direction by scent over a very long period of time. In addition, homes, especially older homes like these, are not near air tight enough to hold that incredible amount of pressure. Finally, the complete absence of flame in the initial blast and any significant post-explosion fire is not in any way consistent with a natural gas blast. There’s more to come on this one…..

I live in Indianapolis, on the southeast side. What was scary about hearing about this accident was that my friends had gone through something similar about 10 years ago. A home that was behind them and a house over blew up from a gas leak. It was intentionally set. Someone had left the gas turned on until it got so high that I think the gas heater blew or something like that. I most likely have the details wrong, and that's ok because I don't want to identify the specific case. My friend's house was so badly shaken up and damaged that it was unstable to live in and the upper floor was torn up. I think this particular incident in August looks a lot worse. But the same number people died in each accident. I can't imagine. How instantly your life changes. These poor families. I'm so sorry.

Very strange how this keeps happening. In the early 90s my son's father was in an explosion an hour and a half up north from Evansville also in Indiana. They're also not 100% what caused it & if it were gas or propane. He lost 4 family members & barely survived himself. He doesn't consider himself a burn victim since it was a flash explosion & it basically just melted them. Hard to get him to talk about it tho. But what...is...happening?! RIP to those who lost their lives & condolences to the families affected.

Years ago in the town I live in we had a natural gas explosion in the basement of a BIG brick building downtown housing several businesses. The gas had been leaking for a while before it exploded and it took out most of a city block. Any type of lab explosion meth or otherwise would not cause such a huge explosion. The gas company knows they have cast iron lines that have been freezing and thawing for 100 years. They eventually crack, leak and It's not safe! They don't want to put out the millions it will take to fix the situation. Therefore, it's likely to be "undetermined" just like the one 5 years ago 1/2 mile away that also killed 3 people.

Horrible situation! So sorry and sad for these families who lost loved ones in the horrible explosion! I have been a firefighter for over 40 years being an officer most of the years, and any time I responded to a natural gas leak situation odor, leak call I was always slightly on edge until I was able to monitor and mitigate. You can respond to 100s if not 1000s of these calls and all it takes is one situation that goes south. Natural gas will bite you quickly if not taken seriously taking a nonchalant approach. This situation could have been a lot worse if minutes earlier a reported gas odor was dispatched to the fire department and fire company was on location investigating when the explosion occurred.
