Every single one of his competitors was on the juice. it would have been nearly impossible for the great SR to compete without it, PD was fully doped in 87. He won on a level playing field.

Its pity riders like Roche had to take drugs to succeed as he was so naturally gifted.

bighands69 There is proof but Walsh didn't fully understand the blood results you see in part 2. We know for certain now that a reticulyte reading of over 3 is indicative of EPO use. The fluctuating levels that Roche uses as a defense against doping would actually have him banned under the Biological passport that was introduced in 2008. Roche' s defense that he rode better when his reticuolyte level was lower is right but not in the way he phrased it. The reticuolyte count is the level of immature red blood cells in your blood, these do not help you ride better and the count is always higher after injecting epo as new cells are being formed. You will then ride better once these reticuolytes have formed mature RBC's but with a higher level of mature cells comes a lower level of reticuolytes. Doping is tested by both. 15 years after this interview, we know so much more and all of these blood markers in the conconi files point to doping. Roche's defense of giving blood to Conconi who then experimented on it does not pass the smell test because bone marrow is what synthetic EPO stimulates to produce these levels of reticuolytes, it can't be done with a blood bag and has to happen in the body for that reason. Roche is out of his depth here and is bluffing through his test results from the files, he has no idea what he is talking about. If he is admitting that the blood is his as he has when saying he gave it to conconi, that means he had to have EPO injected into his system for the reasons I mentioned above. Roche indirectly admitted to EPO use in this interview when he thought he was cove ring his tracks.

Roche has the same audacity as Armstrong - naive to doping in cycling when it was rampant & unavoidable - flying to Ireland just to clear his name - Pat Kenny & the Doctor in the audience have a lot of back pedalling to do - pardon the pun!

Logic dictates, end of story. If Pantani was alive he knows the real deal with Carerra. Roche is in denial, Jalabert style..."the doctors treated me and I had full trust in my doctors"...completely offensive! He is trying to defend his doping legacy. His son knows the REAL TRUTH! BTW/ I'm IRISH

People haven't got even an inkling. Stephen Roche is a legend. He won the Giro D'Italia, Tour De France and World Championship in one year using only skill, strength and audacity. He is a monster of a human being and legend of the sport. He does not need ridicule for representing his country on the highest stage. If it wasn't for him there would be no Irish Tour De France, Giro D'Italia and World championship winner. This is an astounding feat and he should be acclaimed for it.

Every single person in the entire professional sport was taking it. It was undetectable, F. Moser set the new world hour record using epo and blood transplants. There is no witch hunt in Italy after Moser. He is celebrated as a champ.

@@PauricDeS indeed and same goes for Pantani and others. It is not universal however and these cheats still deserve stick. So many now have lucrative jobs in cycling.

He says he can accept the pieces of paper in the Conconni report, but his family can't. Ultimately he accepted the drug culture within the peloton. There was no other way, when it was so prevalent, before it was hidden in coaches, motorbikes and spare rooms. Accepting is not guilt, but his comfort with the evidence can lead to the conclusion of the usual moral indignation of the accused "I did it, everyone else did it, I am not guilty as I didn't cheat my peers."

When Kimmage wrote “A Rough Ride”, he didn’t criticise Roche, but Roche bad mouthed him. He was Kimmage’s hero, but he didn’t stick up for him. Kelly didn’t cause Kimmage any problems.

Roache can sit and claim all kinds...fact is to win in the EPO era you had to take EPO, transfusions, corticoids the lot, you would simply have zero chance of winning a 3 week race with your hematocrit dropping daily...Charly Mottet is the classic example, clean rider always tailed off in the 3rd week of the Tour.
