@Struwwelpeter4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the upload of the Pink Windmill Show, VideotapeFTW. What an amazing work. I found out about it probably around 2017 thanks to whomever started with the meme but at that time I did not pay enough attention to it and last week I stumbled across the show once more and this time I got a little 'obsessed' with it lmao although I wasn't born in the 80's nor in the UK region, watching the show is quite comforting. Crazy times we live, right? Taking today as example, I was stressed out about a few things and then I came back here and watched episode E3 and E4 and by the time they were done, I was feeling better... Me as a 90's kid still can see some similarities with the shows that I used to watch back then and that's pretty cool. Ah, simpler times! I could notice that a lot of people from new generations (and other nationalities) also came for the meme and a bunch of them stayed for the quality of the show, now people picks their favorite Windmill Kid and know their name and of course still have fun watching it Hahaha only proves how brilliant this show is and now it feels like we are like a small community. I wonder if you ever received any message from the Windmill "kids" (nowadays), I know that the one and only Spencer lend you a tape (or tapes) of the show but what about the others? They all seem to be cool kids and turn out to be cool/responsible adults as well. I still got some questions in my mind about the show, but I wrote too much already lol Gonna save em for another day
@VideotapeFTW4 жыл бұрын
Oh, you're welcome, and thank _you_ - that was wonderful to read! I've always thought the show had a sort of energetic calming influence (if that's not a contradiction), and I'm glad others are discovering that, too. We've been very fortunate in that both Spencer and Joe have been instrumental in getting hold of recordings of episodes I didn't previously have, and they've both helped out immensely. I also had brief exchanges with a few Pink Windmill Kids prior to it all going viral, and they all thanked me, which was a relief as I always had a nagging doubt that some would be wishing the show could stay buried. Thankfully, the overall reaction has been very positive and it seems they're all at peace with their routines being 'out there', as far as I know. Feel free to ask questions whenever you like. :-)
@Struwwelpeter4 жыл бұрын
@@VideotapeFTW "Energetic calming" is probably the best way to describe the show Haha and that's so good to know that they are on board with the idea of preserve the show's memory. I can't imagine how satisfactory is for you to have their approval. I mean, to have our gratitude and support is one thing but coming from the Windmill Kids themselves is just a whole new level. And Joe, the legend, is also helping you?! That's great! He seems to be the nicest guy since his Windmill times Hahaha I guess my questions are a bit "technical" or way too specifics. Now I know the show used to air once a week (Fridays) cause you mentioned in the description of S01E04 - if I'm not mistaken -, so what about the rehearsals? Did they used to rehearse the whole week prior to the big day? Cause they dance routine is always flawless on air. And there's also the external footages, lines to decorate, their study and etc it seems a lot of work, they sure were busy. Was it common for a kid show in the 80's to have a production this big and being broadcast live for the whole country (or even countries) or were they the pioneers in the matter? Was the show a hit back then that every kid wanted to participate or it was just "popular-ish"? And what about you as a fan, assuming that you also were a kid during its running time (last question) could you ever be able to watch it live? Hahaha I'm sorry for the amount of questions, but I'm just curious to know. Obviously, if you don't know anything it's totally fine.
@VideotapeFTW4 жыл бұрын
@@Struwwelpeter Taking everything slightly out of order, one thing I know is that all pre-recorded footage - external dances, Boggle, Twin Schools location shoots, etc. - was shot and edited before they even went into the studio, and that goes for whether the show itself was live or not. So, months in advance, the music and singing was completed; then they shot whatever outside footage was necessary for the dances, and then the Kids could focus on what they were doing week by week. I'm pretty sure they learned all the dances before the live series started, and then they had intensive rehearsals for what they needed for the next immediate episode. Every live show had a dress rehearsal the day before (I think), and that includes S1E5, which got called off because of a strike by the props department. It's a miracle they managed to pull it all off, really, when you think about it. There's no way anything like this would get the green light nowadays, and, to be honest, there was no other show like it. I mean, take the Post Office - that's two children presenting long segments to camera on live national television. The scope for going wrong is massive, but somehow everything came together every time, one way or another. And that's without getting into the live dancing! The show was a ratings-winner for Central, and being in the last-thing-on-a-Friday slot at its peak is proof of that. That slot was saved for the jewels in the crown, as it were, and it had to be both popular and have the broadest appeal across children's age groups. Does that mean everyone liked it? Not by a long way. Some hated it. Some loved to hate it. But those who liked it _really_ loved it and would have given anything to be a Pink Windmill Kid - myself included! Sadly, I never got to be in the audience or anything like that, but I remember watching many episodes as they were broadcast, and, like many (who won't necessarily admit it), I used to go back and try to learn the dances. The first time I mentioned that on KZbin, I got loads of messages from people saying they thought they were the only ones who did that! It's amazing to think that, decades later, a new generation is discovering the joys of the Pink Windmill.
@Struwwelpeter4 жыл бұрын
@@VideotapeFTW Ooohh, thank you so, so much for you careful response. It makes me feel kinda nostalgic to read about it, even though I have never experienced none of it, if this makes sense. Yes, to think of it could be a recipe for a disaster but they made it work perfectly, even when the spin quiz segment went a little sideways, Rod's ability to improvise could keep the situation under control, obviously a little nervous Hahaha Well, this show is definitely something that I would've watch as a kid (look at me, I'm 27 now and I'm enjoying it), but sadly we never had a show like this here in Brazil. Ah, so probably even the ones who were a bit older, in their early teenager years secretly wished to be a Windmill Kid (maybe the ones bashing the show's reputation lol). That's awesome. And it's a pity that you were unable to be in the audience but now you're the one keeping the show's memory alive, so you're like the Windmill Master nowadays Hahaha

I’ve had a memory of seeing an episode of Emu’s Pink Windmill as a kid for many years and I remember being jealous as heck of the contestant in Grotbag’s Grotto being offered a Masters of the Universe Tri-Klops, so I thought I’d see if I could find evidence of it, or if my memory was tricking me. Today I had it confirmed that in 1984 it happened! I’m guessing I then got him for my Birthday or Christmas that year as I had him, with ring, in my collection as a kid. I’m still mad at that kid for not taking the prizes and going for the cauldron instead. Thanks for helping me confirm this memory as being the real deal! How can I remember this as a 6-year-old and 37 years later I still remember it as clear as day?!
