@joeboudreault2226 Жыл бұрын
@@team3383 I agree completely, Team33. But let me explain. What I meant by saying that David Fry was usually the 'straight' man what's that he was the serious side of the comedy team, while Laurie was often the punch bag. In the sexual sense I've always known that Fry is homosexual and atheist, two traits I do not like in any person. But I do admire his skills and some of his perceptions. Laurie of course is thought of as a more wide-ranging talent. For example, how many people know the story of how Hugh Laurie got the role for Dr. House in the TV series (a series created and written by a fellow Canadian)? He was so busy he wound up doing a verbal audition from a telephone booth somewhere and they hired him on the spot. Not many Americans or other fans realize this is a Brit with Brit accent but he done the role of House perfectly. I was astounded by the quality of his performance in that series. A giant talent, yet a modest man. And it does take a lot of courage to play a character who's an idiot, like George in the Blck Adder series...- which I loved - which of course highlighted the incredible abilities of another Brit, Rowen Atkinson.

I do think it's a real shame that a large audience share is only going to know him for House. There's plenty of great actors out there, but no one can do comedy quite like Laurie. There is no one on earth I'd rather have had play Bertie Wooster. Laurie's a genius.

I actually think he worked better with Rowan Atkinson on the black adder series. A bit of Fry and Laura always struck me as cringe and arrogant. I love Steven Fry on QI and in his parts in BA and just about any movie he is in but if it is his own sketch comedy it just doesn't play right. You need a believable straight man when you have what is supposed to be a dummy and Rowan just blows that out of the water. Now Laura playing serious roles was actually greatness.
@michaelmcdonald5175 Жыл бұрын
@@DarthPoyner I read somewhere that nostalgia plays a part in how you feel about certain shows. I was 13/14 when I became a fan of Fry & Laurie, and I will admit becoming a wee bit obsessed with the show recently after reading 'Soupy Twists' by Jem Roberts. Some of the wordplay may have led it to strike you as cringe and arrogant, which is understandable. But Fry & Laurie were anything but, and for someone who adores the show that's surprising to hear from a Blackadder fan. Regarding Laurie's serious rolls, I've tried watching I really have, but when do I just want to go back to Blackadder and Fry & Laurie. Maybe nostalgia playing a part right enough eh.

Hugh Laurie is one of those actors and comedians who, when he stands on his own, is absolutely brilliant. But he has obviously not let this dominate his performances nor his ego. When bouncing off others he is often even more funny than when on his own, and he knows to pair his own skills with those of others and get something out of it that is often simply pure genius. Black Adder, Jeeves & Wooster, A bit of... Fry & Laurie were the male French & Saunders;o) Not to mention that Hugh also is an accomplished singer (Kiss of Fire with Gaby Moreno f.e.) and Stephen a great host (QI, Gadget Man) and (gay) Author (Moab is my Washpot, The liar and my fav. The Stars' Tennis Balls). Love'm, thx!

You forgot to mention Hugh Laurie's sexuality, which seems to be relevant when mentioning Stephen Fry

@@garethwilliams5809 Seemed? Ahh, criticism without contribution, was waiting for that... I commented on them as entertainers being wellrounded, sorta jacks of many trades. Only a couple of Stephens novels had gay protagonists and plotlines, hence the brackets, but it just happens that they stuck with me more. Similar to Chritopher Rice's gay thrillers over his mothers' about vampires (which I still loved). Guess due to representation and generally enjoying coming of age more than coming out stories... personal preference. And while being gay might provide a different perspective/insight while writing, dunno if there's "straight" singing... So no, forgot nothing, just didn't deem the default noteworthy.^^
