Sometimes I don't accept the hero because I'm doing really good with the a trooper (e.g. lots of KOs but no deaths). Death with a hero is imminent because of your health's decay overtime. It is rare to live to the "victory" or "defeat" screen as a hero compared to a soldier. Basically, it's to keep your stats, KO to WO ratio, looking good.
