Eileen Aldis I live in Vienna. I think the best part about Vienna is the Prater.

Belvedere Palace is not a "royal Palace" and never has been...sorry to say that but it´s true... I´m from Vienna and I know it for sure....the only "royal palaces" in Vienna are "Schönbrunn" and "Hofburg".....Belvedere was the palace of an austrian General who fought successfully against the turks in the Balkan-region who liberated Belgrade (capital of Serbia) from the turks for instance....his name was "Prince Eugene of Savoy" but he was no "Royal" only members of the Habsburg-family were Royals..he was just one of many vassals...

So impressed with the videos you guys do! One thing I liked about Vienna is that if you are struggling finding your way around, people seemed very ready to help. I remember my friends and I were on the subway and we weren't sure where we needed to go next. People overheard us and helped right away and confidently spoke English with us. I think as an international city you'll find Vienna easy to get around in if you only speak English (my German is very low-level).

I hope you will make more videos of Vienna (because I somehow feel you will return there) and I hope they will include the Hofburg and the crypts found below Michaelerkirche and the crypts of the Habsburgs found in the Kapuzinergruft. There are so many interesting and lovely things to see in Vienna and I hope one day you will video them all. Once again, a great video! Thank you so much for making it.

The Ferris wheel in Riesenrad park was one of my favorite things. The konditorei (bakeries) were amazing to try and compare and trying all the different sausages in cart, shops, and restaurants. The state opera was amazing and I loved the standing room price tickets which had great acoustics. I was living in San Francisco when I visited Vienna and quickly sorted out the San Francisco Opera House is a smaller version of this one in Vienna (the theater portion is slightly different, but hallways and locations of bars and restaurants is consistent).
@EileenAldis6 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas! I haven't ridden the Ferris wheel but that sounds fun. I bet it's a good view! My next video will be about some of my favourite spots to eat and, of course, drink coffee in Vienna! I LOVE all the cafes as well. Did you have a favourite? So glad to hear you also enjoyed the standing tickets at the opera. Such an incredible deal. I've never been to the opera in San Francisco but it's interesting to hear how similar you found it.
@ThomasVanderWal6 жыл бұрын
Eileen Aldis oh yes, the coffee! The SF Opera House is really similar, but a slightly smaller scale. It was so similar it felt like déjà vu. I knew where the outside balconies were for intermission and how to get there and there was a bar placed near it just like in San Francisco (I think that is when I was told SF was a copy or “inspired by” as I mentioned it to my friend I was with). Also getting out to Schonbrunn Palace for a tour (walking the gardens was more entertaining) and going to a mass to hear the Vienna Boys Choir was also amazing. I really wanted to make it to the Vienna Art History Museum to see Breugel’s Tower of Babel among many other things I had studied and liked. The History Museum was interesting as it had a really good Egypt collection with a mummies crocodile that still pops up in dreams at times.
@EileenAldis6 жыл бұрын
Wow, sounds like you had a fantastic time there. Pretty convenient that you already knew your way around the opera house ;) The Vienna Boys Choir sounds amazing and that's something I'd love to experience someday. And many more coffees on silver trays as well...! So many reasons to go back again!

Was there for 3 or 4 days. It was late 80s and I had just finished a term in Oxford (which was my last of undergrad) and flew to meet my girlfriend who was on break from studying in France and she was coming out of 2 weeks traveling in (then) Communist Eastern Europe. I hadn't seen her in a couple months and hadn't heard form her in more than a week. I think I had been to the SF Opera House 5 or 6 times by then (for Opera, Ballet, symphony as it was used as symphony hall as well). Following Vienna took the overnight train from Vienna to Paris for the day then on to Lyon (then a week camping in Corsica). I hope Lyon is on your trek as it is a great city that gets overlooked, but is the food capital of France and has a lot of interesting things there (old Roman Ruins, great parks, and an incredible old section). The bistrot culture in Lyon is incredible. Also, I hope Corsica would be on your travels as well is it is a great out of the way place (outside Summer tourist season, late Spring was really good). Calvi (where Christopher Columbus birth place is marked, is a nice citadel town overlooking the Mediterranean. It is also rather inexpensive. I really enjoy your videos and I look forward to seeing you guys just keep going.

Wow, sounds like the whole trip was fantastic. I've never been to Lyon but my cousin did an exchange there and we have a friend from there as well. Loved your video! It gives a great insight in what the city has to offer and i like how genuine and lovely you are :) I live nearby vienna and even I learned about so much new stuff i never heard about before, thank you for that ^^ Here are some suggestions for your next trip: Theseustempel and Votivkirche, it's very relaxing to sit in the park and then enjoy the beautiful architecture of the church. Also I celebrated my birthday on the top floor of the DC tower, which offers an amazing view over the skyline of Vienna and also straight into the UNO City (and makes for an excellent birthday) :) Another place I love to visit is the Donauinsel because of its relaxing atmosphere, and you get these free spirit vibes when watching all the skateboarders. Also located in the inner city is the Strandbar Hermann. This is the most amazing thing ever, as it offers a beach-like feeling (they really put sand all over the place) while relaxing on the bank of river Danube (you can't jump inside the river tho, sadly). Last but not least, i love to just stroll around the 1. district at sunset, it's a very clean (and posh) district with a lot of interesting sights around every corner. (Also Vienna is the host of 2019's EuroPride, so this is also going to be incredibly amazing)

Nice video, actually you are right it is surprising why in this tiny country Austria there are so many magnificent buildings, especially in Vienna. Actually Austria used to be much bigger, real big, when the Habsburg family had their royal court there for 650 years. The Habsburg family originated with the Habsburg Castle (“Hawk’s Castle, 1020 A.D.) in modern Switzerland and after 1279 gradually came to rule over half of Europe. The Habsburg family grew to European prominence with the marriage and adoption treaty by Emperor Maximilian at the First Congress of Vienna in 1515, and the subsequent death of adopted Louis II of Hungary and Bohemia in 1526.

Other Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) buildings: 2 former train stations at Karlsplatz and Otto Wagner Haus at Linke Wienzeile 38 (ii) The imperial crypt of the House of Habsburgs beneath the Capuchin Church, (iii) Karlskirche, (iv) Belvedere, (v) The entire Hofburg, (vi) Kunsthistorisches museum. If you love Art you should visit the Ernst Fuchs Villa, the former home of architect Otto Wagner and later the surrealist painter Ernst Fuchs. Fuchs together with Dali and Arno Breker formed the so called "golden triangle" and was one of the driving forces of the austrian school of fantastic realism. Now it is a museum dedicated to his art. Another recommendation would be the Bank Austria Kunstforum, a small museum that changes its exhibition 2-3 times a year. You won´t need more than 60-90 min for it but the exhibitons are usually of very high quality. Currently a Man Ray exhibition is at show.

Love the commentary, very lively. Keep the vids coming! 0:54 Well it was the city apartment for Prince Eugene of Savoy...being a prince he technicly was royal - but thats about it. 5:35 Costs 2€ last time I saw it and there are discussions of closing it. 6:44 If u plan to travel more then thrice in a day I would recommend the daily (24h) ticket and for longer stays there are 48h, 72h and weeklies. The longer the time period the cheaper it becomes. 7:08 The roof got rebuilt after WW2 as the cathedral got bombed there. U can visit the catacombs, the southern and the northern tower. If you look carefully you will notice a difference between the stained windows inside. There are a few that managed to survive WW2 still in their original beauty and then you have the cheap post-war glass used to repair it. Major attractions u have missed: Charles Church, Naschmarkt, Hofburg, MQ, Parliament, Town Hall, Prater (Ferrys Wheel), modern Vienna (Danube Tower), Heuriger as well as one of the most visited attractions in Europe...Schönnbrunn Palace. PS: My personal favourite place in Vienna? Hmmm for food probably Rudis Beisl, for art the Imperial Treasure Chamber, for technology the Technical Museum, for a fascinating combination between history architecture and nature Haus des Meeres.

she aquired it and made it something called Hofärar -> property of the nation. She never lived in it, maybe visited it once or twice. Joseph II, her son and crownprince transformed it into an art gallery. He never lived in it either. About 100 years later the at the time crownprince Franz Ferdinand used it as a workplace/office. Again, apart of the orginal owner, Prince Eugene of Savoy, no royal ever LIVED in it.

Eileen Aldis Melk is an abbey in the Danube. It's also part of the pilgrimage route call El Camino del Santiago in Spain. The route is part of a pilgrimage network that stretches all over Europe. You can rent bikes there and ride down alongside the river. You can take a riverboat for part of the journey as well.

Eileen Aldis Also take a day trip to Mayerling, it's where the Austrian Crown Prince shot himself because he couldn't be with the woman he loved. Omar Sheriff starred in the movie version of Mayerling, I think.
@EileenAldis6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'd love to do the Camino someday! Melk sounds lovely.

haha Mark, I think there's a typo where you meant 'shot' himself but this is much funnier 😆

So true, Trish! Oddball is such a good word to describe them. I couldn't help laughing out loud when I first walked in and saw them all over the room (which I believe was next to the one with the iconic Napoleon portrait haha) :)

So how is it that you only have about 20k subscribers? Your production work tops that of many of your fellow KZbiners with many times the number of subscribers. Great job, great topic, and you managed to give me new information about one of my favorite cities. Are you Canadian? The way you pronunced „you“ made me think so. Drop me a line if you happen to be traveling through Nürnberg.
@EileenAldis6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, Rob!! I'm glad to hear you think we should have more :) Yes, I'm Canadian - I'm kind of curious which 'you' clued you in...or maybe it was every time haha.

Eileen Aldis I followed up with your Budapest video and continued to hear Canadian sounding pronunciations. I’m originally from Rochester, NY, and we would occasionally make extended weekend trips to Toronto. I also have friends in Ottawa. And, listening to anyone speak that gives me verbal cues that reminds me of Lee, Lifeson and Peart will always put me in a good mood. Anyhow, the Budapest video awakened memories of a great trip there with my wife. I also love all the research you put into your videos. Are you still in Taiwan now? I can’t wait to watch those videos. Taipei was my first business trip to Asia, and we had the great fortune of there being a national holiday right in the middle of our trip. A work colleague connected all the dots to some really interesting places to see.

Same! What's your favourite thing about Vienna?
@TheFluffiesChannel6 жыл бұрын
Our favorite thing about Vienna is all its history, architecture and of course the food. When I graduated from Concordia University (Montreal), I went to Budapest and Vienna. I found this restaurant which I loved so much that I went back for dinner twice (and I was only there for two nights. The restaurant was called Figlmüller. When we were there in 2016, friends took us to one of the Figlmüller chain, but it wasn’t as good as the one I had in 1997.

I havn‘t been to the Opera toilets yet, even though my mother works in the Opera
@EileenAldis6 жыл бұрын
That's so cool! Does that mean you get to go to the opera more? :)
@Freddus6 жыл бұрын
Eileen Aldis Well, the Opera belongs to the „Bundestheater“ which means we do not only get the chance to go to the Opera but also to go to the theatre which we both actually prefer. So sometimes we go to the theatre together, and my mom was at the „Opernball“ a few times

My favorite part of Vienna is the train station "Meidling" because it brings me out of this city. Don't get me wrong, all the tourist attractions are great (I should know, I live 30 minutes away from it and I saw many of the museums, Schönbrunn and Prater more than once) and I appreciate the rich history Vienna has to offer (since part of my family once lived there) but working there is one of the most horrible experiences I ever had.

Cool Video, I love Vienna too thats why I moved here :-) Some constructive critisism: You should consider doing some image processing on your footage in post-production, as the colours of the G7X seem kinda pale at times, especially in the Belvedere Palace Part. Either try the automatic image correction of your editing software, or play around with the colour, contrast and brightness values yourself. If you do so, make you sure you apply the exact same correction for the whole scene/place, so the viewer doesn't feel confused. Good Luck!

You ought to go to Hotel Imperial in Vienna and enjoy their world famous Imperial torte ;) Blaue Bar in Hotel Sacher is also one of my favourites, but your BF will have to be clean shaven to get in - beards are faux pas in polite society.
