A TRUE and HONEST perspective of what's it's like being black in Vietnam. If you're a person of color in Vietnam, I would love to hear from you and your experience. I watched so many of the other KZbinrs but couldn't find anything on Nha Trang.
Dear locals,
Don't be afraid to talk to tourist/visitors. We want to hear from you as much as, I'm sure, you were dying to ask us questions. Let's make this world a more inviting place because you live in one of the it's GREATEST GEMS!

To be honest, as a Vietnamese I rarely a black person in Hanoi. So if I see one, I would probably stare a bit but completely out of curiosity. It's like seeing an unicorn for the first time. We see black people in movies but to see one in real life being so close to us is like looking at movie stars. And sister, you are beautiful. People can't help looking. It maybe a lifetime opportunity for some Vietnamese who can never afford to travel out of Vietnam/Asia. So I get that it can be annoying but just relax. The local means you no harm. They are just curious.

Thank you Trey, we couldn’t have agreed more. Vietnam is beautiful!! We recommend traveling through cities via sleeper trains (very cheap ~ $30) so you can see it’s gorgeous landscapes. Although we had some questionable interactions, we still had a wonderful time and made some lifelong friends. It’s just a completely different perspective being a person of color. Please come back here and let us know of your experience, we’d love to hear about it!

When I first went there in 2013, there were parts of Saigon where people had never seen a white man either. They'd not only stare, but walk up and touch my arm. Had a taxi driver who persistently stroked my belly once, he didn't seem to think that was odd in any way.

As a vietnamese living in Canada, I found that funny. He was probably curious but I apologize on his behalf, it was rude and innapropriate. But maybe because the customs in vietnam are different and more allowed to be physical compared to western world where they value personal boundaries. I was born in Canada, so I would probably get a cultural shock if I go to Vietnam. Last time I visited was when I was 8 years old. Very long ago.

Beautiful Sis 🤎. We too lived out there with our baby and the stares, picture taking after a while didn't affect us. We understood not many of us walked, shopped and dined with the locals, especially out of a resort setting. We were always greeted with conversation, hellos and once we were seen all the time we formed friendships. We had no prior knowledge and just decided to live outside of our norm and learn how to adapt outside of the US. Really wished we would've shared our experience there back in 2018- 2019. We are thinking about returning soon, look forward to more of your channel. We are a traveling family always hoping to connect. -Tia

I personally want to live in Vietnam once I finish study in college, don't know if I want to go to uni. Overall, I think Vietnam is a good choice since the living cost is not expensive, good food, good weather.

👍❤😇Hi Marta, just remember that you are very beautiful that is why you get a lot of attentions from people around you in Vietnam. Take it as a plus and don't worry too much about it. Most people in Vietnam are not as well traveled as people in the west. Enjoy Nha Trang!!! 🥰🥰🥰

Thank you so much. It took a lot of getting used to and unfortunately a while for me to understand what was happening. I really appreciate you saying that. I’m thankful for the younger generation and the locals I had the opportunity to get to know. I visited Nha Trang in 2005. One woman pushing a plastic dumpster down the street, noticed me and her jaw dropped. Mouth wide and she stared so hard she almost walked into traffic. Another time two girls walked next to me trying to guess my nationality, I could understand them so I turned to them and asked in Vietnamese, “Are you sure?” Their eyes almost fell out of their heads! Then they begged me to say more but it’s pretty much all I had and we just smiled and laughed together as we walked in the same direction. Although, at times I felt awkward, I never once worried about my safety, that police would chase me down for no reason, harass me or look for justification to jail me, or kill me on sight. They’re just curious…not hateful, racist and vindictive.

So much more diversity in Saigon; compared to the rest of Vietnam. Most of the Africans I had the pleasure of meeting were mainly there for school, which is very understandable. In terms of travelers, there were a select few. I think countries that openly discriminate their own darker complexion population aren’t likely to attract as many tourists of color. Seeing the aisles and aisles of lightening creams in so many grocery stores, department stores and vinmarts made me so sad. Its as if so many people are taught to feel that way and they let it get to that point. Breaks my heart.
