1980 in Baumholder Germany I had a M-16 that we used for guard duty. Long story short we were live firing one night 50 cal and M-60's and discovered we had a can of 5.56 that we thought we had fired during the day. Well you never take ammo back so I took the old guard rifle down to the M-60 bunker me and another guy loaded up a bunch of 30 rd mags we even loaded full.mags with just tracers Anyway when the big guns starting shooting I cut loose with the M16 and the exact same thing happened first it got hot then it caught fire the sling even caught fire when I starting firing the full mags of tracers that's when I knew I better stop the tracers were not even going straight and the dam thing was so hot you could not hold it I fired a little over 500 rounds full auto with probably 2 or 3 full mags of tracers, it looked like I was walking around with a red light saber had to put in a mud puddle to cool it down.

@JackedRado71 kind of opposite what everyone thought. It's an era corect pencil... its pretty thin where it failed... probably why barrel profiles are not like that today.
@AMT424521 күн бұрын
The A2 barrel profile is the same as the A1 behind the FSB. The heavier muzzle end of the A2 likely would have failed the same or sooner (front end dropping harder)
@JackedRado7121 күн бұрын
Standard ar barrels are all the same thickness (a1) in the mid section unless you have a HBAR. My thoughts are that this barrel was just bad material. The reason I see the a2 being better is extra weight to apply leverage so it resists bending up and also acts as a heat sink

We get your feelings. But even though this is fun... watching Ben's videos helps alot with development of new products. We are working with a company to develop a hybrid HK / AR piston system. These destructive tests really help. It's fun for the internet.. but we get tons of failure points to observe in the industry... quite frankly... we don't have a pay for... (note... yes.. we paid for this one....lol) Gas tubes... barrels.. gas block roll pins failures..etc.. These things highlight so many things you just wouldn't think about. Just let Ben entertain you... but us manufacturers really love to particpate to learn from it.

@GoldenWebb I just knew from watching these videos thats every AR platform rifles MO. The gas system always fails first on mil spec AR's. I knew the pencil barrel wasn't holding up to sustained full auto fire it was one of the failing points of the pencil barrel why they didn't keep it after the Vietnam War.
