The Historical Society of Western Virginia is the steward for Lt. Gary Miller's Medal of Honor and, on what would have been his 77tth birthday, we want to tell you his story.
Lt. Gary Miller was from Covington, Virginia and joined the Army in 1967, taking after his father who was a World War II Veteran. On the evening of February 16, 1969, Lt. Miller was leading a patrol when they encountered hostile forces.
The opposing side threw a grenade and to save his men, Lt. Miller threw himself onto the grenade. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously and it was received by his family in 1970.
The Medal of Honor is currently undergoing conservation efforts and will be on display in an upcoming exhibit at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in November 2024.
