Travel by overnight sleeper train in Vietnam from Danang to Hanoi! I rode the 4-berth soft sleeper and toured the 6-berth hard sleeper near the end. Watch more Vietnam vlogs: bit.ly/VietnamTravelVlogs

Hi family! Alright...so this overnight train ride to Hanoi was not the most pleasant for me; however, it is still a great way to travel Vietnam. Here are some things I'd recommend you doing if you are considering taking the sleeper train:
-DO bring food & snacks! No food cart rolled around during the entire 16 hour train ride. I kept trying to listen for the wheeling of the cart and even left my door open around dinner time. There was nothing. There was water and hot water though :) Cup o noodles team!
-DO bring jacket, scarf, or sarong that you can wear. It gets COLD at night especially as we get closer North. You can even lay them down if you're afraid of unclean bedsheets.
-DO check the door & lights in your room when you arrive in case there's some kind of malfunction. You may be able to ask the train staff (who come around sometimes) to switch to another one.
-DON'T talk super loudly and be mindful of other passengers in the room. A man ended up taking the berth next to me at 12am and was talking on the phone for a whole hour :/
-DON'T buy your tickets online if you can just get it at the station a few days earlier or even a day earlier! I met a couple of travellers who just showed up that day and booked. It is always cheaper way cheaper at the train station. OR ask your hotel staff to help you book it. Don't go to a tour agency - they'll charge you lots. I was traveling during TET so had no choice but to secure it online. If you're on last resort - check out 12go.asia (the site I use for train & ferry travel in Southeast Asia).
If you don't want to take a sleeper train but still want to experience it, take the Vietnam railway train from Hue to Danang or Danang to Hue. It is a 2.5 hour train ride with breathtaking views of Vietnam's coastline! You can just get a regular seat, no sleeper needed.
While this train ride didn't go so well for me, I know the experience is different for everyone. Take it or not, it's up to you :)! It IS way better than the overnight busses - or so I heard.
Thank you for tuning in! Hope this information helps you when traveling in Vietnam!

Wow - My fiance and I took this train for 32 hours from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and arrived this morning. I had to see if other people had as bad of an experience as we did, and it looks like we're not alone! Not only did we have an equally bad experience with the cleanliness and bug situation, but our train also hit and killed a man during our trip, so there's that... The train came to a stop as soon as impact occurred, and lucky for us (sarcasm), the body was brought out from under the train right in front of our window. It was as gruesome as you'd think, missing limbs and all. Will never forget that poor man... Our journey continued just 10 short minutes later after the train staff handed the body off to some farmers on a tarp. We then went on our way as if nothing happened! At the next stop, another worker hosed off the blood from our car... It was all just too routine. This type of thing must happen a lot? But it didn't make it any less horrifying for us. Hope the young man is at peace now... Other issues included our 4-berth sleeper being a constant 85-90 degrees and extremely rude roommates. Well, just 2 of the 5 that we had over the course of the trip were rude, I should say. And to your point about the linens - each time someone in our cabin departed the train, the staff simply refolded the linens (and sometimes they just left it a mess) a few minutes before the next passenger arrived. Though I should be clear that these issues pale in comparison to the loss of life... Overall: good views and 2 nights of accommodation, but clearly not a great experience! Though sometimes that's the reality of travel, for better or for worse.

In 2017 late October, I did the Ninh Binh - HCMC trip in 2nd class soft seat. I had the chance to talk with locals, I could buy food from the train service (and it was delicious), We got blankets for the night because it was cold. It was 31 hr, and it was a great experience. And the toilet... well yeah. But never mind, go green! Traveling by train always a better way to know a country, than the plane.

Kudos for very well done video. My first sleeper train ride was in 1969 after I got drafted in US. Just me in the cabin, soft bed, sink and toilet. My next sleeper ride was on the train from Saigon to Quang Ngai around 2005. When my wife, who is Vietnamese, announced she managed to get us tickets on a sleeper train (this was during Tet when everyone is traveling around) I thought that was going to be so much better than sitting for the long ride. And I thought back to the soft bed and all... When we boarded the train and entered our room, I noted 3 bunks stacked on each wall and a fold out small table. No air condition and a metal guard covered the window. Well, I had nothing to complain about since I told her family when I returned to Vietnam "I want to experience the culture and food of Vietnam, please forget I am American." Despite, or in view of, the Zen like simplicity, I had a great journey. I managed to open the window for air and sightseeing and it was interesting to see things change from the green of Saigon to the desert around Mui and farther north. My wife knows many Vietnamese songs and she sang songs while we were gazing out the window, and it brought back memories. As we passed mountains where I once flew, I thought how amazing it is that life constantly changes. It stopped frequently and we'd buy food and young coconuts from vendors and bought enough to share with poor students who shared our berth. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. One thing I should note about this train locals take. The bathrooms had squat toilets. I used to do a lot of backpacking so that didn't bother me. However, digging a hole to use for backpacking was junior varsity so to speak. On this old French train, it was constantly swaying and in motion. I graduated to the Varsity of squat toilets. The beds were hard and the bamboo mats long since lost any resiliency but I got used to it. When day broke we were close to Quang Ngai and the change from desert and dry countryside turned into the most vibrant green I had ever seen. The dragon fruit trees seemed beautiful and other worldly. I have learned a lot living in Vietnam. If I have at least one good meal day and a dry place to sleep, I am doing good. Happiness does not depend on material things or material comfort. Tôi yêu Việt Nam!

Caught this train in the other direction a year ago and it was a fabulous trip. Was told to bring food, so that was no problem. Was also told that half the toilets are western style, so I looked beyond the first option. Linen was clean, no bugs, no mechanical problems, had the best nights sleep due to the gentle rocking. Guess you can have good luck or bad luck.

I took that sleeper train from Nha Trang to Nam Dinh, I think it took about 24 hours. My partner and I took the lower bunk, because when you're not sleeping it's much better for sitting and looking out of the window. We got the same carriage type as this video by the looks of it. I just remember that this journey dragged on a bit too much for me, and I was pleased to get off. But I'm glad I did it that once.

Love your videos...Glad you made it safely....It's a good experience....I personally hate train travel, even short trips, even in First World countries, so I can imagine that a 16 hour ride in Vietnam was quite an ordeal...Better than the bus?...Yes, of course....But I'm at the point now where I fly whenever possible (except Greece...I always take the ferrys across the islands). Enjoy your travels! Look forward to the next video. Ciao

I did the sleeper from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi a few years ago and I really enjoyed my experience. There was a Restaurant Car on the train but it was a long way from my Compartment and infested with Cockroaches! We did however have really nice food that came on the trolley, was a long journey but saw far more of the Country than I would have done flying. The train is worth doing but expect it to be a little scruffy and to meet little critters crawling about! Later I got the Sleeper from Hanoi to Nanning in China which was of a much cleaner standard but having to get up in the middle of the night for border formalities was a bit of a pain in the butt!

I have done this exact trip only in reverse from Hanoi to Da Nang. Watching you in this made me laugh because I had similar experiences although I didn't get locked in the cabin. I'm amazed you didn't mention the toilets :P Anyway it is an exhausting trip in ways but at the same time grounding & memorable.... We think it's bad in first class but if you go and see the locals sitting on those seats for 16 hours you realise that you shouldn't be complaining about your not so clean or comfortable bed... I believe there is also an option for the locals to buy a hard or soft seat because when I talk to my friends in Vietnam they will often say oh it's ok I paid for a soft seat. If you don't have a lot of time just fly or if you are one that can't really get the grasp of the local experience I would also suggest flying. That said for me it was something I think back to and am glad I did..... But than I love being in Vietnam so it's mostly all good :)

We rode on the 2nd class sleeper from Hue -> Saigon! We wanted to save some money so we took the cheapest option, the top bunk, what an experience! We couldn't sit up, little space for bags hahah. Pretty cool though, we were sharing the room with a local man we just had small talk along the way, pretty tough with the language barrier. I would have freaked out if the doors didn't work the way they should!!!! Think you handled it pretty well. Also, the 2nd class sleeper we were in was pretty clean compared to your 1st class!

Did this trip 25 years ago. 6 berth cabin, no mattresses or sheets - just straw mats. Had an army escort to the "dining section" in the evening (I was the only foreigner). In the morning the other 5 Vietnamese in my cabin told the army guys to go away and they shared their breakfast with me on the bottom bunks - I wouldn't have swapped that experience for a night at the Burj Al Arab.

Just had a flashback to when I was traveling on an overnight train in a first class berth in India. It was only me in the berth so I turned off the lights, and a few minutes later I saw little shadows moving about all over the place. It was cockroaches.... I turned on the light and they all scarpered but I didn't get much sleep that night!

Haha I was on the same train and my room had a door like that. It took a while to figure out but it actually does work, you just have to pull incredibly hard.

Sad that you had a poor experience :( I recently took it from Saigon to Da Nang and it was the highlight of my trip. The older vietnamese grandma and grandpa in our berth adopted us and fed us some of their food 😭 We also did buy food when the trolley rolled by!

Haha I am on board the SE4 as I am writing this and at our previous stop I heard some banging noises and shouting in vietnamese, and I immediately tought about this video, and sure thing, the cabin next to mine was not possible to open, both I and a vietnamese woman tried to, but she eventually had to get the train workers. It was pretty funny tho, now I am kinda glad me and my bunkies (an elderly Vietnamese couple) had kept the door open troughout the journey 😅

rode the train from phan thiet to quang tri and da Nang to phan thiet back both in a sleeper cabin. wore a hoodie and long pants both trips (wasn't very clean). there was a food cart that came around every few hours. was ok but faster and less time than taking a taxi/shuttle

"Significantly cheaper" than a flight is a relative term. I got a flight from danang to Hanoi for about $50, I don't consider that breaking the bank

Sorry about your train ride experience, TJ. Yeah, Vietnam is a big country! Unlike in Taiwan, just take HSR from Taipei to Kaohsiung and viola! You are there in a jiffy!! But in the old days, the ol' Fushing trains would take more than 8 hours because you stopped at almost every station. But 16 hours?! Whew! Haha!! 🇵🇭

It almost looks like there was a loose screw on the handle, which was why the handle wouldn't go in the tracks (from my point of view). I can't say for sure, of course, because I wasn't there. It looks hella frustrating tho, and what if you really, really, really had to pee?! This is why I have already packed a multi tool in my backpack for when I leave for Vietnam in November :-P Hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip!

I once traveled from Ho Chi Minh city to Nha Trang by train, it was worse than this. I stayed the same kind of room of yours, it was dirty, lot of drunk people,... And yes, when i finally able to get down, it was really crowed and my back was being pushed all the time lol

Watched you video before taking the train from Hanoi to Da Nang. Thanks for the tips. I stocked up on food and drinks, but there is a food and drink cart that comes around, that serves meals and snacks, but you would need to have your door open to see it. I found the journey comfortable and only saw one small insect. The cabins were clean. After catching the sleeper buses, it was like heaven. Would definitely do it again. The only issue was sharing with all men, as a woman travelling alone. Would be nice if they tried to separate by gender.

Question, If im traveling alone and want to have a soft berth (4 bedroom similar to yours) do i need to buy 4 tickets to occupy all 4 beds so that no one else can share with me or does 1 ticket give you the entire cabin? Appreciate your help
