You have to start somewhere. Producing weapons like this is not an easy venture but being self reliant as possible for a nation is critical to its defence. It may be outdated by most countries these days but as the saying goes " it's better than nothing." That being said I believe cooperation to have licensed built version of a more modern APC would have more benefits. A significantly more up to date system and modernized production infrastructure.

Don't know what to make of this vehicle, or its weapon systems. It is an interesting first indigenous attempt, but has a way to go, as others have pointed out.

Bro, maybe some of the newer, heavily upgraded modification of the system like HJ-73Es and 9M14-2T, 2T5 can be useful in some capacity but the original version used by PAVN is garbage and belongs to a museum.

for our vietnamese friend HaHd: Very Briefed And Summarized Ideas: the subject is not me smart ass, I don't claim I am a military expert, we all here presenting our opinion and putting our remarks, but we conquered half of the old from b.c and later established empire stretched from Chinese border to south of france, while the vietnamese fought an independence war in newly formed Vietnam during very special period of time, with heavy foreign aid and direct involvement... the vietnamese have an experience in fighting the army what is very temporarily called the united states of america, but for most it was guerrilla war in very complex and highly demanded topographic environment it was series of continuous ambushes in pure jungles, and all the engagements especially the major ones that took place between the army of what is very temporarily called the united states of america and the Vietnamese army VPA or their southern allies the Vietcong were ended in a terrible defeats for the north Vietnamese side, of course without ignoring the VPA and the VC successfully inflicted heavy losses on the occupation forces... to correct, the wrong notion so that the vietnamese do not flatter themselves too much about the reasons for the defeat of what is very temporarily called the united states of america in the Vietnam war:. 1- what is very temporarily called the united states of america did not have the will to continue the war, although in the last two years of the u.s involvement the situation on the ground began to improve while the internal public opinion of the settlers in the New World turned against the war... 2- what is very temporarily called the united states of america didn't expand the war to include launching an attack to overthrow the political system in the northern part of what was newly formed vietnam, instead of trying to protect the government in the south they should had expanded the objects of the war to undermine the government in the northern part, chasing or pressuring the sovereign, military, security and party officials from the air and the ground it was enough to create vacuum in power, utilizing the principles of psychological warfare and directed propaganda activities would have contributed to the spread of chaos inside the northern part of Vietnam, and that would have severely affected the VPA's combat capabilities and forcing a large proportion of them to retreat to the cities and towns, abandoning the border posts or at best limiting their ability to conduct an organized defense of the border areas and severely limited the Viet Cong's ability to wage war in the south... propaganda warfare 3- the very complex snd highly demanded topography which limited the field of view for the war machine of what is very temporarily called the united states of america from the individual soldiers to the radar systems and prohibited that war machine from conducting rapid manoeuvres to fix, isolate and crush Vietnamese formations either small or large ones, for most they were on the defense, and the search and destroy missions they conducted although it could last for few months (which they suffered losses) but all of it successfully defeated the vietnamese army 4- the demographic density of Vietnam allowed the vietnamese army to scoop freely and compensated for their heavy losses... 5- the heavy foreign involvement in supporting the war effort of Vietnamese armed forces where all the countries of the eastern bloc and the warsaw pact contributed in one way or another for supporting and sustaining the vietnamese war machine, whether by sending troops and pilots and military advisors or by providing weapon systems and ammunition, here we must remember the size and the impact of direct Chinese and Soviet involvement on the ground in fighting, advisory roles, and support the vietnamese army engineering snd logistic efforts... 6- the belief of the Vietnamese people in supporting the idea of independence and unity of Vietnamese nation, this played a role in providing an incubating and supportive environment for Viet Cong operations and contributed to the formation of intelligence and sabotage cells across the southern part of Vietnam in the villages, towns and in the major cities, this very appealing this idealistic attractive ideology was met in the Southern pat by a corrupt, brutal politically unstable puppet political regime, this gave the government in Hanoi ammunition and contributed to creating a suitable climate for the dissemination of its ideas and national ideological teachings... Regarding the Sino-Vietnamese War, there is nothing to be proud of، the Vietnamese army, which was the best equipped army south east Asia at that period of time, and was newly emerged victorious from the long war of attrition with the army of what is very temporarily called the united states of america and its allies, was easily defeated by the Chinese army which was very backwards, in combat doctrine and in armament, and which had not fought a war (at least officially) since the end of the Korean War, successfully breached the border defenses and crushed the Vietnamese army and advanced at will inside vietnamese territory the best thing the Vietnamese army have done is to pressure the Chinese rear-echelon units and try to influence the PLA supply lines, the VPA claim they didn't use regular army to countering the PLA invasion, but if they was confident of the quality of their army the should used them to defeat the inferior PLA, the claimed numerical superiority of the PLA it It was not a decisive factor in determining the outcome of the military confrontation if the other party possessed tactical and operational superiority in the quality of forces, and in the modernity and effectiveness of its combat doctrine, or its fighting principles... so by avoiding the utilization of the regular army to repulse the PLA indicated that the VPA was afraid those divisions would be crushed or exhausted prematurely, allowing the PLA to enter Hanoi and changing the political system... return to the subject of discussion: the fighting complex in the BMP-1 is considered outdated even from the late 1979s and early 1980s, where the Soviet Union adopted the high caliber rapid firing gun instead of the low pressure recoilless gun of the BMP-1, although the BMP-2 hull was similar to its predecessor but it witness some improvements, but the main change was by obtaining the capabilities to fire while on the vehicle move a qualitie lacked by the BMP-1 and replacing the main fighting complex with the 30 mm 2a42 rapid firing gun paired with 9m111/9m113, although there is a lot of ammunition for the 73mm 2a28 Grom scattered around the battlefield but the HEAT and the HE-FRAG rounds become obsolete and offering limited capabilities in range and destructive performance the sides and the top part of the BMP-1/2 hull can be penetrated even by the 7.62×39 armor piercing incendiary rounds especially the top of the hull, same thing for the 7.62×54r armor piercing incendiary, 12.7mm armor piercing incendiary can penetrate the frontal arc of this IFV the damage depends on the point of impact... the VPA maybe accumulated an extensive combat experiences but for large extents its :1-in asymmetrical warfares guerrillas warfares, and even here maybe restrict to similar complex topographical environment, 2- those accumulated combat experiences consider very outdated for modern combat standard...

complete failure project, the 2a28 Grom is an outdated gun, the current norm for IFVs is the right mixture of high caliber rapid firing guns augmented by 4 modern long range ATGMs, the hull is offering very moderate protection for the threats of modern combat environment with no additional explosive reactive armor (ERA) or non explosive reactive armor (NERA)... they should :1-develop a new turret with enhanced fighting compartment equipping it with at least k61/37mm rapid firing gun (the Russian and the Chinese adopted the 30mm rapid firing guns in the 1970s and the 1980s) and they could follow the trend around the world of developing the BMP-1 by equipping the IFVs with 30mm and 2 or 4 tubes of 9m133e, paired with at least 2 or 4 tubes of 9m133em, worth noting here although the smaller and lower turret is generally offering lower profile and enhancing the stealthiness of vehicle but it comes at the expenses of the protection level of the fighting compartment or the turret and limiting the motion of the gun inside the turret especially in the depression position... 2- upgrading the protection level of the hull considering the BMP-1 protection standard of the hull is dated back to the 1960s... the Chinese type 86 is much superior to that Vietnamese IFV, and the type 97 is from another era...
