Compatriots of the entire nation assembled:
All men are created equal; they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights; among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
This immortal statement was made in the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America in 1776. In a broader sense, this means: All the peoples on the earth are equal from birth, all the peoples have a right to live, to be happy and free.
The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of the French Revolution made in 1791 also states: All men are born free and with equal rights, and must always remain free and have equal rights.
Those are undeniable truths.
Nevertheless, for more than eighty years, the French imperialists, in the name of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity, have violated our Fatherland and oppressed our fellow citizens. They have acted contrary to the ideals of humanity and justice.
In the field of politics, they have deprived our people of every democratic liberty.
They have enforced inhuman laws; they have set up three distinct political regimes in the North, Center, and South of Vietnam in order to destroy our national unity and prevent our people from being united.
They have built more prisons than schools. They have mercilessly slaughtered our patriots; they have drowned our uprisings in bloodbaths.
They have fettered public opinion; they have practiced obscurantism against our people.
To weaken our race they have forced us to use opium and alcohol.
In the field of economics, they have fleeced us to the backbone, impoverished our people and devastated our land.
They have robbed us of our rice fields, our mines, our forests, and our raw materials. They have monopolized the issuing of bank notes and the export trade.
They have invented numerous unjustifiable taxes and reduced our people, especially our peasantry, to a state of extreme poverty.
They have hampered the prospering of our national bourgeoisie; they have mercilessly exploited our workers.
In the autumn of 1940, when the Japanese fascists violated Indochina's territory to establish new bases in their fight against the Allies, the French imperialists went down on their bended knees and handed over our country to them. Thus, from that date, our people were subjected to the double yoke of the French and the Japanese. Their sufferings and miseries increased. The result was that, from the end of last year to the beginning of this year, from Quảng Trị Province to northern Vietnam, more than two million of our fellow citizens died from starvation.
On March 9 [1945], the French troops were disarmed by the Japanese. The French colonialists either fled or surrendered, showing that not only were they incapable of "protecting" us, but that, in the span of five years, they had twice sold our country to the Japanese.
On several occasions before March 9, the Việt Minh League urged the French to ally themselves with it against the Japanese. Instead of agreeing to this proposal, the French colonialists so intensified their terrorist activities against the Việt Minh members that before fleeing they massacred a great number of our political prisoners detained at Yên Bái and Cao Bằng.
Notwithstanding all this, our fellow citizens have always manifested toward the French a tolerant and humane attitude. Even after the Japanese Putsch of March 1945, the Việt Minh League helped many Frenchmen to cross the frontier, rescued some of them from Japanese jails, and protected French lives and property.
From the autumn of 1940, our country had in fact ceased to be a French colony and had become a Japanese possession. After the Japanese had surrendered to the Allies, our whole people rose to regain our national sovereignty and to found the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
...
A people who have courageously opposed French domination for more than eighty years, a people who have fought side by side with the Allies against the fascists during these last years, such a people must be free and independent!
For these reasons, we, the members of the Provisional Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, solemnly declare to the world that:
Vietnam has the right to be a free and independent country-and in fact it is so already. And thus the entire Vietnamese people are determined to mobilize all their physical and mental strength, to sacrifice their lives and property in order to safeguard their independence and liberty.

@@StephenLukehe passed away on Sept 2nd 1969. About the time of Independent Declaration, Ho Chi Minh and his party made the right time and right move to grab a chance of victory. On 1945, there's no official army at all, the only chance to gain independence in on the same time Japan surrendered to the Ally, and the French lost their right to control Vietnam as a colony. It was on his plan, that was the only chance for Vietnam. The August Revolution began with farmers without modern weapons, people mostly did their rebellion with bamboo and farming tools to force Bao Dai Emperor resigned (who officially had the right on the whole nation - in fact just a puppet to the French). Very first part of the Independence Proclamation, the inference from French and American Independence Proclamation taken out. Ridiculously, then Vietnam had to fight 2 of them. Ho Chi Minh did say, Vietnameses fought against the invaders (the hostile French and American Goverment), not their people; he did not hate French and Americans at all, he learned from both countries before came back Vietnam to make revolution.

This magazine emphasized: "With the victory (Dien Bien Phu), Mr. Ho Chi Minh's prestige reached new heights in Asia. Nationalists in many countries, although they were anti-communist, also cannot help but be proud of the feat of an Asian country's army defeating those who were their "boss" from Europe to... Under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh, Viet Minh forces had the most effective jungle fighting army in Southeast Asia, had the most talented general in Southeast Asia, Vo Nguyen Giap, had the most solid political organization led by Ho Chi Minh, and had the best qualifications. adept leadership"...

Ho Chi Minh respected american values and history so much that he was inspired to use words from the Constitution, in his youth he was able to visit america where he gained knowledge and respect for us. They had high hopes that the USA would support their fight for independence against the French just as we had fought against the British for our own independence. We sent OSS officers to improve relations and to observe the combat capabilities of the Viet Minh to see how effective they were, we were quite surprised and impressed to say the least. At the time the US was in between a rock and a hard place, support the Vietnamese and go against the French (which threatened the US by saying they may fall under Russian influence if we did so), or to take the side of our long term ally to avoid the possibility of ruined relations and avoid the potential of france siding with the soviet union. History is filled with decisions that have profound and unseen consequences, it saddens me and makes me think what better decisions could have led to a much better outcome, than again hindsight is 20/20.

Ho Chi Minh had a deep impression of America, but not as you think. He traveled to many countries, to capitalist countries to learn about the social and political life in the places he stopped. He was impressed with the declarations of independence of France and the United States. He used those two declarations as inspiration to include in the declaration of independence of Vietnam. But about the capitalist societies of France and the United States, Ho Chi Minh had a different perspective. In 1912, Uncle Ho went to New York City, the United States to make a living and study the social history of the United States. During this time, he took the opportunity to visit the Statue of Liberty. In the notebook, politicians all praised the bright star on the laurel wreath as the light of freedom. Only Uncle Ho looked down at the foot of the statue and wrote: “The light on top of the Statue of Liberty shines across the blue sky, but at the foot of the Statue of Liberty, black people are being trampled; the fate of women is the same. When will blacks be equal to whites? When will there be equality between races? And when will women be equal to men?

The American government saw that HCM was a communist sympathizer and refused to assist in his independence movement. Instead they supported the French led South and established a flawed but democratic government there. The war broke out because they refused to hold a vote that would determine the fate of north and south Vietnam. They believed that the Vietnamese would overwhelmingly support reunification which would mean spreading HCM communism throughout all of Vietnam. The difference between Vietnamese communism and Chinese communism as I see it is that Vietnamese communism is rooted in ideals of American democracy. Obviously the governmental form of communism is vastly different in structure than a democratic government which in the end I think limits Vietnam in truly living out its ideals. But in terms of ideology alone HCM actually supported and looked up to the US and it’s democratic government. Essentially everything went wrong when the US supported the French colonials instead of the Vietnamese.

Meaning he was for his people and wanted first and far most to allie with United States for the betterment of his own, and therefore he declared Vietnam a Democratic Republic in this here speech. This was when Vietnam successfully united its country as one. During this speech the United States flew one of its large air craft by the rally to signify the alliance between them and Democratic Republic of Vietnam. But it was short lived because the stanky french wanted to take control over Vietnam again, and when called upon, the United States under President Truman refused to help, thus forcing Ho Chi Minh to side with the Communist to fight off the French, who were in the past has exploited the vietnamese people and treated them horribly. Vietnam was split into two, and thus began the Vietnam war. My Family is from South Vietnam, my pops bleed and suffer scares fighting for his country, so im conflicted in this matter. But after studying these history, I really feel that we got played and putted against each other, regarding the North and South. If im correct, the United States failed Vietnam twice.
