To be honest, the purple smoke was actually used to signal helicopter landing zones. Red smoke was used for airstrikes.

Maybe in the beginning they had universal colors for what you’re using them for but pretty soon the enemy would pop the same colored smoke to confuse helicopter landing zones. That’s why to this day you pop smoke when the helicopter is close and they ask you if you’re the X colored smoke and you say yes or no.

You can use any color for landing zones. That’s the whole point. You pop smoke the pilot says “I see X colored smoke is that you?” You confirm it. Because if you do it the other way once you pop X color smoke, all of a sudden the enemy will pop the same colored smoke in multiple places because they already knew in advanced. Maybe in 61 they only used red smoke but that universality probably ended really quick.

Don't forget the steel plate added to jungle boots as a measure against punji sticks. My Dad was nearly sent there after being drafted in '66 but sent to Germany instead where they used the M-14, better suited for the plains of eastern Europe. My Dad claimed most of their equipment dated to the Korean War as all new stuff was being sent to 'Nam. He swears up and down the C-rations he got were from the Korean War lol and he was probably right. One of his buddies would gather up all of the mini-packs of cigarettes the rations had in them during field exercises. He'd have a small bag full of them by the time they got back to base where he'd sell them to Germans who loved American cigarettes.

My dad was in the Philippines in the early 60s, they were doing survival training. His only edged weapon was a bayonet, so he walked into a village and traded cigarettes for a machete. I have that machete today, looks like it was made from a leaf spring, it has a very tapered blade. The part near the tip is thin for slashing while the part near the handle is like a wedge for splitting. It has a dark wood handle that doesn't rot and a thick rawhide scabbard.
