This is very helpful! I was so confused as to why the tones sometimes sounded different depending on where I heard them - now I understand!

Oh, perfect! This is very helpful. The slow, careful and repeated comparisons are great. I may not be able to get my mouth to cooperate but at least my ear and brain are working better :) Cảm ơn, Chị !

I lived in the north for some years and the first time I realised the difference was the way I pronounced d like an English z and people in HCMC didn't. When I came back to my country, I visited a Vietnamese coffee shop and was excited to make my order in Vietnamese but they couldn't understand my North Viet British accent lol. They could usually understand me in Hanoi and the village I lived in. They could understand me at the market near my house, that's where I did a lot of my learning, with the ladies in the market. I know my accent was bad because they always laugh when they try to teach me but once they teach me, they always understand me 😂

I remember my 1st Vietnamese lesson was the "ma" pronunciation. Horse, tomb, rice seedling... are all spelled "ma" with a different accent. There will never be a second lesson but at least I know why I never understand my wife !

My impression of the "dot" tone, from many YT videos, was that a word spoken in N. accent with a vowel having the dot tone cuts off abruptly (not even enunciating the last consonant), whereas in S. accent the word was enunciated completely, more or less like the "downward" tone--I never particularly noticed a slight rise in pitch at the end of a "dot" tone word in the S. accent (as shown in the graph, comparing #'s 2 and 6). Similarly for the "question mark" tone (#4) in N. accent, I never noticed a slight rise at the end (generally I thought the graphic depiction of the q. mark tone in North would be a mirror image--exactly the opposite--of that tone in the South). Also, I didn't realize that the broken tone in the North had a rising component--even more than the "upward" tone, according to the graph. (Overall, this seems a little too nitpick-y, but I'm not sure!)

Tones pronounced in isolation are not the same as how they are pronounced in natural speech. There's multiple ways each tone can be pronunced even by the same speaker based on context

I found that in the South the tones ạ and à sound very similar. Like bạn and bàn, it's hard to hear the difference.

Why do different books and videos put the tones in different order? Why do you merge the 4th and 5th tones, whereas others say it is the 5th and 6th tones that are merged? These are all Vietnamese people making these videos and writing these books. Thank you for your reply : )

Because a lot of Vietnamese don't know wtf they're talking about & don't really know their own language well enough to actually analyse it or teach it to foreigners. Annie here is amazing.
