Thank you Annie for your wonderful explanation of this. I found this video after discovering that my 1966 South Vietnamese textbook and dictionary from Saigon state that nhỡ is the spelling for " to miss" (a bus etc.), while my 1990s to 2000s textbooks and dictionaries (published in HCMC and Hanoi) state the standard spelling is lỡ. Mind blown

Not sure I agree with the statement that 'People who move away tend to preserve the language better' - that might be true for some things, but there are certainly a lot of ways in which the Northern accent is more conservative too -e.g preserving the ngã/hỏi distinction, or pronouncing the q in qu words.

@@JH-ty2cs you might not agree with it but it's true and it's not limited to vietnam.

Fascinating. Thank you for your explanation from a historical perspective. I found it rewarding. 1) So the changes in the North happened earlier than the changes in the South. (08:00) 2) However the variation adopted by the South appear to be more dominant than the North (12:30)

Annie, that was even more fantaatic than your already great videos. Is there documentary evidence to help explain or at least track how so many southern final Consonants changed? . Of course I mean mainly t>c and c>t. Thanks as always. You are a KZbin treasure.

I noticed that you also change the thanh ngã tone. In northern accent, there was a definite stop but in southern accent, it was a smooth, continuous pronunciation. Thanks again, Annie. Happy to see frequent videos :) PS - History helps with memory.

Hi Annie, I'm interested in which other sources you managed to find for Middle Vietnamese? After long hours searching online, I've only found the 'Việt-Bồ-La' and 'Phép giảng tám ngày', both by Rhodes...are there other texts out there?

What are some words or phrases that Viet Kieu use that are no longer used in Vietnam?

"Cầu tiêu" is one example. While they still say "cầu tiêu", we say "nhà vệ sinh" more. Or, they still say "hãng" but we might say "công ty" more now.

@@LearnVietnameseWithAnnie Yes, I've heard those words here in the U.S. It's good to know that those are not used much anymore in VN. When I learned Vietnamese in college, our textbook was so old that it would have sentences like, "Có bao nhiêu piastre là một bát phở trên đường Catinat?"

How can foreigners be encouraged to study a language that is always changing and is different across the regions?. I don't think other languages change pronunciation or grammatical rules throughout the time, at least not in few decades.

u can treat north and south as an dialect. not accents sound. just like there are different dialect in germany, france. but the gov that time, pick up one of these dialect as offical language for the country. to learn viet. dont think too much of north or south word pronnoue diff, focus on the main wan u are learning, slowly increase yr voculabry usages . when u got a feel of the basic and immedit level to listen and speaking, then slowly learn on the other side , north or south words. then u would be more easily to understand and learn these north or southern words.
