I have found speaking Vietnamese to be much easier than understanding Vietnamese when it is spoken to me. I am afraid that I am still in the "translation" stage; that is, I am attempting to translate Vietnamese into English as it is spoken to me...and...I am quickly behind the speaker. So unless you are able to have Vietnamese spoken to you on a routine basis, you will find understanding spoken Vietnamese to be quite challenging.

Pronunciation of a number of words is nothing like one would expect from studying the proper pronunciation of vowels and consonants. Also proper tones are frequently nonexistent ... at least to my ear.
