We all get a bit down with our playing from time to time. I played a lot through the 80s 90s and basically quit at the end of 2000. I even sold off some gear that I now desperately miss. I got back into it when I retired in 2016, discovered TPS and I'm now back into it with gusto! When I get a bit down about my playing now I try to learn a song (usually from YT). I don't go to the 'technique' vids. That's just more deflation and not what I need in that moment. Playing guitar is certainly a roller coaster.

That’s great advice Kevin! I hope everyone reads this. :0)

I think some people confuse the idea of seeking out new gear as an effort to "sound better" - when in fact some of us (many who watch TPS I presume) do it for the enjoyment of playing with new/different gear. If you want to play with a tube amp or try the latest modelling technology or whatever - then do it just to do it - no need to rationalize it or have a reason.

55:36 Oh, how I do love my Fuzz Face. Especially with those vintage style degaussed pups in my American Vintage II ‘61 Strat. The Tex-Mexes in my Road Worn are a bit too hot to do the thing but the AVII cleans up so nicely with the FF, the circuit imparting a wonderful sort of thickness at low volume on the guitar and then it just screams when I turn it up! ❤

My local shop gave me a heads up about the Mythos pedal as he is a Mythos dealer. I’ll be buying from him and hopefully I’m supporting local & TPS! Also, in Emaj, I think it’s a G#. Because there is an A in Emaj, and you can’t have two A’s. I think that’s how it goes

Hey Mick, loved this episode. That bit in ‘Natural Woman’ is still mainly major scale harmony. The chords are B - F# - A - E. But what makes it work nicely is that descending bass line. These are the 1st inversions of the 2nd and 3rd chords, giving some nice inversions and voice leading. So, now the chord progression is B - F#/A# - A - E/G#. If you’re thinking about in chord numbers, you could think of it in the key of B as a whole and it would go - 1 5 b7 3. So it’s in B major overall, but the A is borrowed from another key. Hope that helps! Jack

The old winter blues are not discussed enough. I do not enjoy the winter especially December. Be kind to yourself and it will pass. Everything does indeed pass. Thanks for the taking the time do this solo, much appreciated to get some lovely schedule and stability to the old Jan. Yesterday (time of show) was indeed Blue Day (google). It up from here! Haha all the best!

Everything will pass - this too will pass - is perhaps the most powerful statement of all along with ‘it is what it is’. The more you truly understand this (I’m not there but working on it), the more peace life will give you. Cheers.

Listening to this today and the bass talk reminded be that in one of the recent shows you mentioned doing something along the lines of "bass for guitar players". I would love that as a show! Would love to hear your approach to tone, what to play, what to listen for, etc.

I routinely (once a month?) reduce to "all clean" (to reset my ears) and start with "EQ"ing the guitar (with amp set flat), then amp EQ, then reverb , then delay, modulation, OD/Dist, until I've added in all I want (generally) and test that all remains clear and articulate with any one effect on and then any combination of them. This may take several days as I have found my hearing can change daily (even in the same playing space). After that process I can relax and play with little self-imposed distraction.

In regards of a custom no budget instrument. I'd go for a fender scale offset or offset semi-hollow guitar with a PAF-style pickup in bridge, and Hum-sized P90 in the neck (for moddability), 4-knob arrangement with 50's wiring and push/pull for series/paralel on bridge pickup and out-of-phase on another push/pull. Propably would go to Vuorensaku Guitars or Ruokangas Guitars here in Finland as my local luthiers and make killer personal stuff.

Regarding directionality/beaming. I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this but I can highly recommend you Google 'Mitchell Donut'...and then make one. For the price of a 14" (or less) circle of foam your problem may be fixed. I had this exact problem with a Katana amp. At rehearsals with it, whatever tone and volume I set to suit me was infuriating my keyboard bandmate. If I set it for him then it was unbearable for me. I began to wonder whether his ears were knackered...or his taste. Or maybe mine were?! So I set my looper on with a riff and wandered across to where he was sitting. He was RIGHT, it WAS unbearable. 😄 I had finally experienced and understood beaming. And a homemade Mitchell Donut fixed it. I can now walk VERY off axis and the tone of my amp remains pretty consistent throughout. Do look 'em up, see if you can get one behind your grille (or even experiment with it in FRONT of the grille if you can find a way to fix it) and try it for yourself. Cost me less than a fiver. 👍

First off a fun episode as always. As for the question of blank check for a custom guitar. I would spend it on a lefty crestwood deluxe replica at dauget guitars. A original vintage epiphone lefty is Unobtainum so thats what I would do. Peace

Even with the AVD, that Barefaced cab is pretty small for most uses. Exactly what I visualized it being useful for was as a third cabinet, running some kill-dry modulation* so it could sit sideways behind the other cabinets but not have phase issues. *e.g. I'm running a Hammond Scanner into one of my Z-80s. It could sit out of line.

Neil Young never bothered about string noise. It's about releasing pressure as you move between chords. Fast Fret reduces it a bit, and look after your calluses as rough dead skin increases noise

Blank check guitar for me would be a Fylde like John Smith plays with a dual output pickup. If it was an electric guitar, I would go with a Collings JL 470.

I am so sick of the “Lowered stage volume” trend. First of all, are you gonna tell the drummer to turn down?😂 He’s on stage hitting acoustic drums with big sticks. And if you’ve got a really smackin’ drummer, like I do, I don’t trust whomever is running monitors to get me over that on stage. And no one wants to hear guitars coming out of monitor speakers as the soul source of that audio. The speakers in my amps are designed for that and do a great job. When a bunch of people are jammed up against the front of the stage, the PA is often parallel to them or just behind them. On a quiet stage, all the front row hears is the drums and whatever is bouncing off of the back wall. I play blues, rock n roll, doom county and metal. I’ll go ahead and turn these amps UP. THANKS. ❤
@stanislavmigra9 күн бұрын
Agreed on all points. No bigger letdown, than cramming yourself to the front row to admire your favourite band, only to hear just drumms 🤦🤦🤦

I really dont like, when bass is tuned bellow kick drum. Speaking from a perspective of a guy in audience. In most venues, it transforms Bass into just a Woof, instead of percussive rythmic instrument present in the mix. Also, there are soooo many people I know, who are angry, when bass is not present in the mix in a live setting. And always praise great performance of a bass player. Worry not 👍
