In the first attack, the mother was going to attack the owl but the other chick (female) was in front, so she was technically blocking her mother's counter-attack. That is why in 1:39, the female chick was the one grabbed by (and suffering under) her mother's talons. However, this can also be seen as a move (made on instinct) to hold the chick down and to prevent the owl from abducting both chicks in a single attack. One of the reasons the term "bird-brain" came about. Already experienced an attack earlier but the mother still did not move the chick to the back of the nestbox. The worse is the mother is behind her chick, which makes it easier for attackers to abduct her remaining chick. Funny thing is that the chick paused her crying to defecate and then continued to squeal again. The chick learned her lesson and finally moved to a corner, but only at 5:30.

Great horned owls are experts at this sort of nocturnal smash-and-grab, and while larger raptors such as eagles and ospreys may be able to successfully fend off the attack by grappling with the owl and causing enough risk of injury to the attacker that it's just not worth the effort. But the peregrine falcon isn't big and powerful enough to take on the owl in this sort of combat... the falcon is built for speed and agility, and their ability to mob and drive off other raptors is greatly dependent on them being in flight. Being cornered inside the nest box, there's not much momma falcon can do except try to frighten off the owl with threat displays and alarm calls. Truly a clash of dinosaurs!

@MarK-ly2ml4 жыл бұрын
@Shay Ogun Mate its not about going "in favour" of any bird, but sticking to facts. Falcon is an incredible bird that is undobtedly impressive, but for peregrine to kill an eagl or large owl is possible in a extraordinary circumstances, or if eagl or owl is young, injured or crippled. Peregrine is light bird, and it will try to intimidate and chase of larger birds of pray. But in a real fight, even large raven is known to be dangerous for a peregrine on the ground. I suppose you are a falconer or falcon fun, for what I have deepest respect, but you tend to exaggerate capabilities of your loving birds. Every ornitologyst and planty of filmed encounters will confirm that facon is in general no mach for GHO or eagl. Especially on the ground.

I have a question for anyone reading this. So today my dogs a 7 year old small Yorkshire and a 6 month old chihuahua were found dead side by side after we let them out around 4 am because they go out every morning. They were bleeding from the neck and head but weren’t missing any chunks like they have been eaten. I live in New Mexico and we have Lobo (wolves) owls, hawks, and someone reported seeing a bobcat and bobcat cubs around but we have about a 7 ft fence maybe a little shorter. I’m wondering what killed my dogs and I keep thinking what would kill them and not eat them. That’s what brought me here but while my dogs were small the biggest was about 10lbs and the smallest 5 or 6 lbs I don’t see a owl taking out 2 side by side judging by the way in videos they hunt. I just keep thinking what did that and why didn’t the other one run and why weren’t they eaten. Anyways just wanted some opinions . Thanks

Probably was the mother bobcat attacking to protect what she thought (barking dogs) were predators. The second dog probably tried to help his buddy when the bobcat had a hold of the first. Makes the most sense based on your info given.

Owl takes your baby, so it makes sense to attack the other one in a fit of rage.

The falcon can't see on the dark. It has no idea what's happening

Poor mama falcon is totally confused in the dark. Owls hunt at night and hide during the day with good reason.

I remember last year (a different female, the long time Michele) still here & the GHO managed to kill one of hers; didn’t get any. now that the GHO has this nestbox as a food source..? no longer safe for the falcon family..
