Good list, but it broke my heart to see Obscura by Gorguts here. That album was the beginning of the mind-blowing dissonant extreme metal and bands like Imperial Triumphant, Ulcerate, Howels of Ebb, Pyrrhon, Ad Nauseam take that record as an influence. That album isn't for everyone, I agree. Not anyone can digest that dissonant, chaotic sound, but it's a fantastic piece of art that broke death metal.

It's still largely seen as a masterpiece by the Metal Community. How it was seen in this video and by that stupid-ass commenter who presented it in no way makes Gorguts' "Obscura" a shitty album.

I will never forget my disappointment when I first listened to St. Anger. I was a bright eyed high school student in the peak of my early metal listening career; obsessed with Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. I was so psyched to hear Metallica had a new album and I picked it up without knowing anything about it. It felt like my dog died or something. Now that I'm older, I don't think it's the worst thing on planet Earth, but coming from Metallica it really hurt.

That Obscura (the album) one is a very weird hot-take. That album has an impeccable, weirdly catchy and very complex structure that never deviates into "noodly" just for the sake of it or not just "thrown together", as others have pointed out, a very influential album that has inspired bands like Ulcerate, Imperial Triumphant, Ad Nauseam, Portal and even Deathspell Omega.

Gotta disagree with Obscura by Gorguts, it's considered one of the most important metal albums ever for a reason. For me it trumps their follow up (From Wisdom to Hate) which had questionable production. Just my opinion. On the topic of shit albums - this is going to be a very unpopular opinion but I HATE the new Opeth album "In Cauda Venenum". I've listened to it 2-3 times and absolutely none of the ideas connect with me. The production is good but everything sounds so uninspired like they've lost their sound completely. I honestly prefer Heritage, Pale Communion (which is underrated IMO) and Sorceress to In Cauda Venenum.

On Sleep's Dopesmoker.... it really is just a zone out mood record. You put it on during a roadtrip with someone and have it creating the atmosphere in the background. It serves well in that purpose. I actually did make my own edit of DopeSmoker in ProTools where I only let each Riff Repeat twice, in some instances three times because of the incoming/outgoing riff, and it flows really nicely and is only 40 minutes long.

Some fun facts about The Least Successful Human Cannonball - Original Destruction vocalist left for a while in the late 90s - The new guy wasn’t a good fit for the musical style (or at least executed his skills very poorly - Sounds like a Machine Head watered down, unfocused, metal album with migraine-inducing production - There’s moments of funk/nu metal in the musical writing, which at the bare minimum, could be intriguing but again; wasn’t executed well - The guitar tone is too abrasive and distorted, even for die hates - Lyrics is unfocused, clearly displaying that the band was struggling as a group - The band disowned the album a while ago, meaning it’s no longer considered a part of their discography. Making it the most epic of fails in the metal world.

My mom isn't much of a metalhead at all, but I played Opeth's Coil off of Watershed on my college radio station and she really liked that song. Coil is very sad, depressing, and very soft, but it's a fantastic song. I love the raw, rougher and heavier songs a lot, but having some slow, soft, sad and depressing songs are awesome too. It really depends on the mood I'm in. I love Opeth, but their songs are too long to be played on the radio, which sucks. That's probably my only complaint about them, but they are a great band. Great band to listen to in general, but for radio airplay, it's hard.

I'm happy about yall's feedback about The Hunter submission. I jumped on the Mastodon train after hearing Oblivion, bought that record immediately. I was 13 or some shit and tried to get my dad to listen to it because he's a huge ozzy and pink floyd fan, he forced me to turn it off after hearing Brent's vocals on divination. When the Hunter came out I was just disappointed because it didn't flow as good as Crack the Skye. Black Tongue was a banger when I first heard it but hearing tracks like Blasteroid turned me off because of their usage of the major scales. Thought it wasn't heavy enough. But man after coming back to them years later, those tracks are some of my favorites. I def wouldn't tell someone to listen to The Hunter before listening to Leviathan and Crack the Skye, its experimental but its a great listen after hearing both sides of the Mastodon discography.

It's so bad that at least one band member credited on the album refuses to acknowledge that he ever participated in it. It's a bit of a gut-punch, as this is what they followed the fantastic 'Inhuman Condition' EP with. Want to hear a death metal album so bad that even 'Illud Divinum Insanus' laughs at it? I now found out why my dad saw Kiss live. It was because one of my aunt's buddies was working at Van Andel Arena and had given out free tickets to see some of the shows that were going on at Van Andel. My aunt's co-workers wouldn't bother going to the rock concerts with her, so some of the family went along instead. It was Aunt Anita, Dad, Uncle Todd and Aunt Angie that went to see Kiss. Pretty cool for my dad to see them. I understand why he went. Kiss is a band that could perform a show. No matter if you love them or hate them, Kiss helped revolutionize the rock show experience. Oh, and on my college radio show, every time I play Kiss, I say, "Kiss of flavor!" Like the Cherry Dr Pepper that Kiss did for the Super Bowl commercial. It's hilarious. My dad likes it when I say it every time. I have to say it like that. Some people might not get it, but me and my dad do. I'm still going to say it because it's entertaining. It will never get old. I also have to say SSSLLAYYYER! It's easy to say it rather than spell it out. And I also say Rockin' with Dokken. I love all of these bands I mentioned. And I'm still gonna say them like that.

Hi Thralls of Metal, It was only a few days ago when I found your channel and this video, so I've missed the opportunity of giving a comment to be gone over. Now, here is mine (restricted to the five Worst Metal Albums I've ever heard): #5 BATHORY - OCTAGON Another desperate attempt by Thomas 'Quorthon' Forsberg (R.I.P.) to surpass Slayer in both speed and aggression (the 1st one was REQUIEM) - it didn't WORK! In addition, the drums sound as if someone has thrown the drumkit downstairs... #4 DEICIDE - LEGION Compared to acts like Death, Obituary and Morbid Angel, Deicide have always been 2nd, if not 3rd choice only, and LEGION confirms it (perhaps 'Satan Spawn, the Co-Co Demon' excepted). Posing as devil worshippers as Deicide did (and do!) is not enough... Mark: Eleven Volts! #3 RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIC Very controversally discussed, if this was to be the ultimate crossover between Metal and Hiphop, BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIC had been reviewed even in the German Metal Hammer magazine (10/1991). Far away from being a MANOWAR fan, I nevertheless give my verdict BSSM is no Metal at all (AAARGGHH!). On the other hand, I needed a new disc to play Frisbee with.... #2 CANNIBAL CORPSE - BUTCHERED AT BIRTH BAB had been voted 'Worst Album of the Month' in October 1991 (Metal Hammer magazine). The disgusting cover artwork and 'nice' song titles like 'Meat Hook Sodomy', 'Under the Rotted Flesh', 'Butchered at Birth' and 'Innards Decay' are eloquent enough and caused this album to be confiscated all over Germany. So bad that, in turn, it is good again... #1 METALLICA - LOAD What had begun with the so-called 'BLACK ALBUM', had been continued with both LOAD and RELOAD. Metallica had become S E L L O U T S ! Nevertheless, both the 'BLACK ALBUM' and RELOAD feature a few acceptable traxx - LOAD does not (ST. ANGER, another bad album, is a different matter, and is regarded as a NU Metal clone).

I know exactly what you mean. I personally cant stand what passes for metalcore these days which is basically watered down melodeth mixed with emo. The only metalcore band I have stuff from is Parkway Drive, but its only their two most recent albums which have drifted further away from metalcore. Ironically, most metalcore fans seem to like those albums the least, lol.

Great video guys👍 very entertaining.. Just one thing, dont get me wrong, the reason for mentioning sabaton was, they stand for everything i dont like in metal! Boring Power Metal for convenient wacken Metal guys. Cheesy lyrics, embarrissing live acting... I found it way to easy bashing st anger or risk... or cold lake. I can find at least one riff on every of those albums i dig... Cold lake isnt to mega therion, Sure.. but its far from glam, the Main Problem back than... the looks... we didnt even Listen to it after seeing it. And if you dont expect thrash from megadeth, what i never really did.. risk has some not so bad stuff, etc. so in general i would agree with almost everything you say. I could have mentioned manowar as well... Great Job, Keep it up, cheers and have a great weekend

I haven't heard all of Testament's Demonic. I think there were some new things in style they were trying out, and they refined them for the better on The Gathering--which I love. With Damageplan, I will admit, I was underwhelmed with the lone album. But I assumed back then, and I still stand by now, that the Abbots were just getting used to the new band as well as their new bandmates. Now that I think of it, I think they spent that first album trying to organically find the sound of their new band--remember Pantera was the only band they ever knew.
@paulmares9815

I really, really disagree on Demonic from Testament. James Murphy is friggin' amazing and although it's deffinitely not a 'classic' Testament album, it's a pivotal moment ( some songs from the previous 'Low' too ) for the band where they fully intergrated a Death Metal approach which gave us such master pieces like 'The Gathering' and 'Dark Roots of the Earth'. Demonic has a lot of 'groove' in it too ( I wouldn't call it Groove Death/Thrash Metal, but still... ), which I really like; songs like The Burning Times, Murky Waters and/or John Doe are fan-fucking-tastic!!! Overall, as a die-hard Testament fan, it's not in my top-all-time-fave 3 albums from Testament, but deffinitely holds a solid 4th rank Also, although I really, really like Alex Skolnick, most of his soli and playstyle after he re-joined... I dunno, it kinda doesn't sit right with me, when he tries to forcefully feed us his jazzy ideas ( and I'm saying that as a Jazz fan, also have his Alex Skolnick Trio album which I dig )... Also: Yeah, the guy who put 'Practice what you Preach' must have either been a troll or an actual brainlet with no musical taste whatsoever

I really enjoyed this video, some of these albums are horrific to listen to. I would also add the following: Slayer - Diabolus in Musica (So monotonous and one-dimensional, it's basically Slayer trying to get on the nu-metal bandwagon) Black Sabbath - Never Say Die! (The band all doing cocaine around the clock and basically not giving a damn at this point) Judas Priest - Demolition (I get that the band were trying to do something different, but come on!!) Judas Priest - Point of Entry (Its very existence is pointless and the tracklisting is substandard at best) Dio - Strange Highways (just as forgettable as Angry Machines) Anything released by Poison (This goes without saying) Dream Theater - The Astonishing (It's over 2 hours of mostly piano ballads, pass!) Iron Maiden - No Prayer For The Dying (not their worst, but it still sucks)

Already posted this on a more recent post but since I'm new around here gona leave it here too. This my top (or is it bottom?) 10. I just picked records from bands I like ... perhaps because they pop more to the eye. Some of the records mentioned in the clip will show up while others may be controversial. Bear in mind this is nothing more than my opinion: 10) Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark: Yes I warned this would be controversial. I concur Fear Of The Dark features some great songs like Be Quick Or Be Dead, Afraid To Shoot Strangers and the overplayed title track plus a couple other songs that are ok. But half of this thing is Maiden playing some kind of American FM radio friendly crap. Hell even a lackluster album like Virtual XI sounded overall boring but at least it sounded like Maiden. Things like From Here To Eternity, Wasting Love, Fear Is The Key, Weekend Warrior or Chains Of Misery is the band losing almost entirely its identity while sounding more than vulgar. No Prayer was a letdown for me when it came out (after an excellent record such as Seventh Son) but Fear Of The Dark managed to be an even bigger disappointment. 09/ 08) Sepultura - Roots/ Sepulnation: well I must confess that, apart from Troops of Doom I also think Morbid Visions is quite crappy as well (and a huge step down when compared with Bestial Devastation that I enjoy) but the guys were really young so they get a break. After the great Schizophrenia, the immense break through that was Beneath The Remains IMO Sepultura reached their peak in the amazing Arise when it comes to their Death/Thrash era. Then there was Chaos AD, an equally great album featuring new elements. While not losing their basis the band became more linear, more groove oriented taking some notes from Ministry and Godflesh mainly, plus adding batucada and tribal percurssion and although some purists may slander the record I hold it in high regard since it is here Sepultura ultimately reach their unique signature. So what they do next? While retaining the tribal aspect and Andreas' guitar drone jump head first in the Nu Metal bandwagon... fuck! I mean, apart from a handful of songs this is an utter Korn debut rip off. Scatting? Check. Low whispered intros? Check. Downtuned guitars with ultra minimalistic mid tempo riffs? Check. Huge disappointment to see how leaders become followers. The next album (already without Max Cavalera) was a bit less of a letdown (it featured some hardcore infused songs here and there) but still a shadow from their former selves. And then came Sepulnation. Basically Sepulnation kicks in with a semi decent Nu Metal meets Hard Core tune, followed by a Thrash Core furious uptempo in Revolt and the remainder of the album is as boring and bald as one can get. man this is the epytom of boredom, lack of coherency and vulgarity to say the least. The next record while still being far from being exciting was another step out of the slump presenting a more Thrash Core feel to it and so Sepultura slowly started to climb back to a respectable status. And if it's true they never released another album as awesome as Arise or Chaos AD, records such as Dante XXI, Kairos, The Mediator or Quadra are filled with really high quality tunes. 07) Celtic Frost - Cold lake: I simply loved when Tom and company went Goth Metal on Into The Pandemonium. I also really liked the more restrained sound of Vanity/ Nemesis (underrated as hell). Hey! Even the infamous electro prone Prototype demo album has superb moments that were later featured into the amazing come back that was Monotheist. But Celtic Frost going hard rock? Nah... plus the album sounds absolutely flat, lacking an inch of passion and intensity. Another perfect example of an absolutely futile and forgettable record... especially when it has Celtic Frost written on the cover. 06/ 05) Judas Priest - Turbo/ Demolition: Now when it comes to these two records they simply wreck my nerves. First they were follow ups to two records I reaaaally loved (Defenders of The Faith and yes, Jugulator). Then it's once again the "let's give up our identity to fit the flavor of the week" atitude that pisses me. Turbo is a blatant attempt to go radio friendly on a absurd degree. Not that Priest hadn't released more radio friendly records before (Point Of Entry comes to mind immediately) but there was still a lot of the band's DNA on many of those songs. I like Turbo Lover and to a certain degree Out In The Cold. As for the rest of the album... man... what can I say? I'm not the biggest AOR/ Hard Rock fan as you can easily deduce but man... even in that molde these tracks sound awful, just horrendous. Then there's Demolition. First of the production is utter crap. Then there are some cool tracks: Machine Man, Hell Is Home, Blood Suckers or even In Between and Devil Digger are indeed interesting. But the remainder is something that goes from absolutely forgettable tunes clad in some sort of "pseudo groove/electronic metal" layer to absolute jokes like Metal Messiah, One On One, Cyberface, Lost And Found among others. Pathetic. 04) Helloween - Chameleon: All I can listen to here is a band that lost its direction. It's not because it's poppy. Pink Bubbles was really poppy as well and I simply loved the album. But its follow up is a black hole of ideas, inspiration and excitement. If people ask me to sing one or two melodies from this record I simply can't remind it. An absolute nullity and the product of a band quickly falling apart. 03) Kreator - Endorama: Must admit I loved all the 90's experiments from the band like Renewal, Outcast and even Cause for Conflict. There are some gems out there in this more stripped down/ less thrashing version of Kreator. Loved all but one: Endorama. On Endorama the band picked every cliche from Goth Metal and called it their own. And man it sounds baaaaaaad... as bad as any goth metal band that tried to imitate either Paradise Lost or Type O Negative with the aggravating factor of this being Kreator absolutely devoid of their essence. And then they released Violent Revolution... a record so awesome that all the evil done on its predecessor was 100% forgiven. 02) In Flames - Siren Charms: I really think Reroute To Remain and Soundtrack are really cool albums and still liked some of the more mainstream pair of albums the band released after. To be Fair Sounds Of A Playground Fading was really piss poor but nothing could prepare me for what was to come next. Siren Charms lacks stamina, inspiration, ambition... well it lacks everything but sing along pop metal refrains. In all honesty I totally concur that any album after this atrocity is almost on the same trash level. But since it was the record that really made them go rock bottom it deserves to be highlighted in this list. ............... and now tied in the lowest of the lowest: 1) Metallica and Lou Reed - Lulu: Just to make some points about Metallica and St. Anger: a) I think St. Anger is an album that could be redeemed with some work (another controversial opinion). Just cut some utter stinkers like the title track, Shoot Me Again or All Within My Hands (that actually rendered a decent acoustic tune), trim lots of the useless riff repetitions on almost every song and find a producer that isn't a yes man that lets the band put that crappy sound on the final product (especially THAT SNARE). I love both Frantic (and luckily for me there's a pristine remixed version online) and The Unnamed Feeling - killer tracks. And living proof this record would be really cool if properly produced and reedited is the shorter version of Some Kind Of Monster featured in the single. The production sounds great and the song gains a lot while being almost half its original duration. b) Regarding my lower bracket when it comes to Metallica records: Reload looks like a compilation of leftovers apart from the first three songs. Then I simply detest more than half of the black album as I consider it to be the ultimate boring overproduced pop metal record (Struggle Within, Through The Never, My Friend Of Misery and Of Wolf And Man can't save it from the absolute yawn that is the remainder of the album - ok I'll give a break to Enter Sandman that seems to be a victim of overplaying) and speaking of boring and unimaginative the majority of Death Magnetic is an absolute drag (the opener is the great exception here... cool song. But just a couple more and the rest is a huge snoozefest). So, even with its huge defects St. Anger is a bit far from being the worst Metallica album in my book (controversial again, I bet). That being said none of the above compares to the clusterfuck that is Lulu. Man... I don't even know where to start and finish. Nor do I want to, since all I remember the only time I gave it a listen gives me goosebumps for being one of the most cringe moments in my life. God this thing is painful! 1) Morbid Angel - Illud Divinum Insanus: What can I say that haven't already been said? This is beyond awful.. a new word should be invented just to describe this thing. I think the album would do justice to its content if it was named solely with the last four letters of its title. Utter garbage. Well there are some not so honorable mentions like Sabbath's Never Say Die (never listened to Forbidden... some people say it's even worst), Machine Head's Burn My Eyes, Moonspell's Irreligious, Type O Negative's October Rust or Arch Enemy's Doomsday Machine (more controversial picks I know). Peace.

I've always wondered if Media Play went under because they had to buy back all those copies of St. Anger.

Here are my two cents on some which are not mentioned: 3. Cradle of Filth - Thornography & Manticore Both easily their worst albums, although Nymphetamine was also a step down from previous efforts. Paul Allender isn't a lead guitarist so I don't know why there's a 7 minute instrumental track on Thornography. They really went into commercial metal and bad gothic rock, not the good type from the early and later albums. Thankfully Godspeed and Darkly Venus were miles better, but on Manticore they're barely a cohesive band anymore. The last two tracks on the standard edition and the two bonus tracks are alright though. Glad they found their footing on the last three albums. If someone wrote of Cradle in the early, mid 00s (relatively rightfully so) they're really missing out nowadays. 2. Anything Suicide Silence released after Mitch Lucker passed except the self titled - I'm probably one in three people on this earth who really dug the self titled - yeah it sounded like shitty Korn plus Deftones but I jammed the shit out of it when it dropped. Last two have been boring Death Metal / Deathcore. 1. Wishbone Ash - Trance Visionary and Psychic Terrorism Although not metal but more hard rock and highly influential on Bands like Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull etc. Wishbone Ash released a couple barnburnin albums in the 70s, went full on Metal in the early 80s and some stuff from the last 15, 20 years harkens back to their classic sound. They also did a killer Jazz Fusion album in the mid 80s. A versatile band, but in the late 90s they released two albums which might be the worst albums ever recorded: Both are Trance / Techno / Goa like albums. No guitars, no vocals... I'd rather listen to Lulu 40 times in a row, at least there's heavy riffs and Lou Reed's weird but sometimes endearing (at least on his solo work) shenanigans. Oh and because this was the 90s this shit was selling... I'm not even against electronic music per se, but what were they thinking?!

I just got back on college radio after break and decided to play music from 2004, which is one of the greatest years of all time in rock in metal, in my lifetime at least. And I decided to play Damageplan since their only album was released that year. Either or not it the album is good, I decided to play it anyway. And I did. I also did mention about Dimebag's death because that happened. Dimebag and Vinnie were moving on from Pantera and make new music with a different band, which I can't blame them. We will never know if they would ever come back together. Pantera are going up in Grand Rapids in February, but I have no interest in going because it's not Pantera with Vinnie and Dimebag.

I personally think Impact is Imminent is Exodus' second best album. (First being fabulous disaster) and I do agree that force of habit is one of their worst, I still love it. Exodus is a very consistent band and I consider all of their albums to be great.
