You're right, the admission process isn't fair to the lower class. This really affects international students, like me, that aren't exposed to national/international level competitions or programs - even in their country. Plus, students now take extracurriculars just to impress universities, not because they enjoy it. Anyways, the trick to being successful is to solve the problems of people, so that they pay you for it; the skills to acquire in order to solve problems can be learnt from anywhere in the world - not just top schools.

For sure. I completely agree with your mindset, and it's definitely the best one to have--you'll succeed whether or not you go to a top university if you build up the right skill sets and find your passion! :D

since college applications have opened and since i am now a senior, i’ve also been bringing myself down :( i’m worried i’m not going to be good enough to get accepted and it’s such a horrible feeling

Aaw I know that feeling too well-remember to take care of yourself and try to boost yourself up! If you apply to a range of schools (safeties, targets, and reaches), there’s nothing to be worried about. Even if you don’t get into your dream schools, you’ve worked so hard and the knowledge and skill sets you’ve built will stay with you no matter what! Good luck 💜💜💜

The part where the admissions readers refer to the quality of your school is the context they use when evaluating you. So, the school rating is not part of your actual score but it determines the brush they use to paint the picture of how well you did in a school of good/poor quality versus others at your exact school. For example as you said yourself, kids in your school go on to take dual enrollment classes. If you did not do that, they mark you down a a bit. High schoolers who cannot take college classes due to transportation or tuition concerns are usually noted in the recommendations from the counselor and/or often also part of high school programs that add shuttle service or get cleared for online classes that others may not qualify for. At least, this is what I have seen happen here in California where the “privilege context” is definitely taken seriously.

That def makes sense-I still feel like that metric isn’t always the most accurate thing though + has the potential to be abused. Your school sounds amazing! At least for us, the counselors didn’t know our names/anything about us and were mainly concerned just with getting us to graduate, so I think that definitely is definitely school-dependent whether or not you actually get a decent counselor rec that explains your circumstances

What if I am a first gen low income student but I go to a good school but the only reason I can even attend is because I live in a house that my aunt gave ( my mom and me would be literally homeless if it wasnt for our aunt )

hi anna, i have a question! if i remember correctly, you tested out of a few subjects so that you could take higher level courses. i want to ask- did that show on your transcript? as in, did you get a grade on your transcript for completing that course? i ask because i failed alg 1, but i am preparing to test out of it without taking the class. i am trying to override the F.
@annas-universe2 жыл бұрын
Hi! The classes I tested out of (and took in middle school) showed up as just pass/fail on my transcript--no grade but it still shows I completed the test and passed. This might be school/district-specific though, so I would recommend talking with your counselors or advisors to determine how your test-out will show up and create the best plan for you moving forward! Good luck :D

hey anna, im foreign (not from the us) yet i want to get in a top american school, however here in spain there aren’t things like advanced classes or contests or anything to impress colleges later on- what should i do?
@annas-universe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cam! Taking whatever the most rigorous course load is at your school will help, even if that doesn't necessarily mean AP or IB classes. Also, extracurriculars can help you impress colleges, even if they're unconventional ones. If there are clubs you can join or start at your school, that's great, but also any hobbies you have can be spun into something impressive! If you're worried about not having enough honors/awards for your application, I would recommend applying for scholarships, since you can list any scholarships you win in that section, and at the very least it'll give you practice in writing essays for college :D

Hey Anna! I have no extra curricular activities. Can I start a KZbin channel. Is it comes under extracurricular activity.
@annas-universe2 жыл бұрын
Hi! For sure,, go for it if you’re interested-I used KZbin as one of my extracurriculars. Remember that extracurriculars can also be things like hobbies, volunteering, interests, or even ways you help your family out-they don’t have to be clubs or school-specific things
@classifiesconfidential43302 жыл бұрын
Do something you are passionate about! KZbin is a super unique experience that I'm sure would distinguish you from other applicants! If it's something that you are doing just because you strive to pursue intellectual vitality, by all means, start doing KZbin!

@annas-universe2 жыл бұрын
They do! If you do well on AP tests, you can get college credit at a lot of universities which makes your course load easier in college and saves you money. But, more importantly for college admissions, admission officers will look at your AP scores if you report them on your college application. If you do well on them, that looks really good because that means you’ve essentially mastered the content of a college-level class. :)
