You should watch the live Midnight Special version. It's amazing how easily Mickey Thomas seems to find singing like that - relaxed, smiling. There are interviews on KZbin where he explained that he was with a gospel group and the lead guy taught him how to sing in that style. Also, he had heard Elvin play the song years earlier but Elvin had never been interested in working it up for a recording. Years later, they were making a record, and the producer wanted just one more song. Mickey said, "What about that old 'Fooled Around and Fell in Love' song?" The rest is history.

Makes sense. Always thought Mickey sang this like a blind, Mississippi church boy.

@MrRondonmon2 жыл бұрын
That wasn't quite the way Micky got to sing the song. True, he wasn't the lead singer, but at a party, Mickey was singing free lance, screwing around, and this came out, so it was a *JOKE SONG* and one day many months later Mickey was like, let try that song out, Elvin was like OK, and Micky basically ad libbed the last half of the song, creating a full song out of a half song and Elvin was like, hell, lets record it. This song was on *Guardians of the Galaxy*

Mickey Thomas sang back-up in Bishop's band but when it came to this song Bishop felt Thomas' voice better suited it. He was right and history was made. Thomas later joined Jefferson Starship replacing Marty Balin. Thomas made his debut with Starship on the album Freedom at Point Zero with the song Jane. If you were blown away by Thomas' voice here you will be placed in a coma after hearing it on Jane.

Although most bands named after a band member have the singer's name, there are more than a few named for the guitarist. Elvin is just one example. Ted Nugent Santana Robin Trower Brinsley Schwarz The J. Giels Band You're not going to get many vocals out of any of them. You even occasionally get bands named for keyboards player (Manfred Mann), but those are relatively rare. And the most interesting decision has to be The Alan Parson Project, which is named after the producer. Lol. (And yes, "Jane" rocks the house down, if you want Mickey's work in Jefferson Starship.)

Great reaction, guys! I have said this before and I'll say it again: Nick has the best "stank face" of all reactors on KZbin, when he is feeling moved by -- and enjoying -- a song! 🙂... Keep up the great work and Happy Holidays! ... Mickey Thomas has a great voice, but the best songs by Jefferson Starship (the second iteration of Jefferson Airplane) featured Marty Balin as lead singer ("Miracles" was a No.3 pop song in 1975 and "With Your Love" reached No. 12 in 1976 and "Count on Me" reached No. 8 in 1978). With Mickey Thomas as lead singer, Jefferson Starship and Starship had hits with "Find Your Way Back" (1980, No. 29) and "We Built This City" (1985, with co-lead vocals by Grace Slick from "White Rabbit") and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" (1987, also with Grace Slick), the latter two of which were No. 1 pop songs (heavy emphasis on "pop").

Great song. Number 2 hit in the spring of 1976. I agree with some of the other commentators that the Live Midnight Special version is worth a view. Mickey Thomas certainly has some terrific pipes you can see why he soon headed off to be lead singer in the Jefferson Starship. Elvin Bishop delivers a sensational guitar solo as you guys noted, which sadly was edited down on the single version of this song.
