I've been wearing the Klim Kodiak for almost a year now and I've held off making a video earlier as I wanted to offer a full Long term review. It's a premium textile touring suit at a premium price, so does it performance match up? It's a Goretex pro 3 layer suit, which promises to be the most waterproof, windproof, and breathable material on the market. You'll also find Armacor, D30 armour, 3m Scotchlite, Cordura and a host of exotic materials in the Kodiak. It's designed with a slimmer 'touring' cut and is for use all year round. There are a massive 10 ventilation zips on the jacket alone and I think it's the best vented waterproof jacket I've ever tried. 25 degrees c? no problem and layer up underneath and sub-zero riding can be comfortable as well. It shrugs off torrential rain too. So how exactly did it perform over one year of use here in the UK?
You can buy the suit here currently with a massive 30% discount! - tinyurl.com/kodiak30off

Thanks for the review. Klim produce a "D" version of the suit which is a larger "American" body fit. I have the Klim Badlands Pro which very similar. In the Oz summer, I open the vents and throw a Macna Cooling Vest underneath and it's a good ride in all but the hottest of days.

I've been waiting for this review - thank you. I think of gear (and tires and brakes) as cheap insurance and Klim makes some great stuff. I also know people who have - unfortunately - tested their damage policy here in the U.S. and Klim replaced the clothing in full, so they could learn from the crash.

Excellent and honest review and, as suggested, the price knocks on the head for me. Funnily enough, I currently need a new jacket and trouser set up as a second pair. I ride with a UK blood bike group and this time of year my kit is often wet and cold to put back on (typically 25k+ miles a year); Rukka trouser which I'm not impressed with and a Weise non Gortex jacket which has proved good but now seen better days. Will be interested in your follow up videos of suitable kit; the sooner the better the way things are going.

Great review! I bought the Klim Badlands in November 2016 based on a recommendation from a fellow motorcycling buddy. It’s been fantastic riding through storm weather, hasn’t leaked a drop, and I can honestly say it’s been the best all weather suit I’ve ever owned. I’ve worn it in the worst torrential downpours in England and the warmest summer’s in Spain and Portugal. It may be pricey, however I’ve had to buy a lot of inferior suits to reach this point, so I feel it’s well worth the money as I’ve not had to replace the suit in searching for something better. The only change I could make is to get a more road orientated suit like the Kodiak with leather patches on the shoulders and elbows.

Really nice review Tony. Personally I have found the best combinations after many years of riding is a mid range drop liner suit with a decent lightweight set of waterproofs. The multiply layers work well for winter insulation and it's also much easier to clean waterproofs than a whole gortex suit. Looking forward to your next upload 👍🇬🇧

Just bought this gear (older model shown in video) on closeout at revzilla. I could see the quailty as soon as I pulled it out of the box. I bought this for warm/cool weather riding. i tend to do well with heat so i am using it now in september here in the north . I am 5'10 160pounds and got a 52 jacket and 54 pants. the jacket fit perfect. the pants fit great when tightened up but, I wanted some room in case i grow. I chose this over the latitude cause it's better armor and gore tex pro. Got the jacket for $720 and the pants for $540. Newer models (which weren't worth the extra cash were over $2000 for the pair! The pants are a little baggy , but very comfortable when seated on my bike. Thought I scored big here.

Great review Tony! Had the original Badlands suit, which at the time was the most expensive gear I had ever bought. Have just retired it after ten years of wear. Great quality and also value for money if you divide the initial outlay over the life of the suit. I am not so keen on the new Badlands as very ‘boxy’. So instead am looking to replace with the lighter weight Carlsbad jacket and the Latitude pants. Seems to be the best combination to suit my year round on and off road riding. Let’s see how long this one lasts?

I’m using a klim kodiak suit for a third year and I can say only positive things about it. It never let me down even on the toughest conditions. It never leaked a drop of water. It shows minimal wear. I only had a faulty zipper on my pants and had to sent it back replaced for free and got it a month later. It was on a period the I wasn’t riding so it was fine. I would buy it over and over again.

Good review - I tried a Kodiak when I was buying a jacket but ended up with a Klim Lattitude. All fantastic jackets with one issue only - the cuffs on the sleeves dont have enough adjustment and the Rukka system of a slightly longer Neoprene inner cuff that allows a "labyrinth" fit over gloves is better system. However I believe this is now rectified on the Klim Kodiak version 2 which proves that Klim listen to their customers. I have now found that the best jacket for me is the Klim Latitude (fantastic in hot weather) then adjust the layers for colder weather - either T shirt for Hot / T Shirt + Down Jacket for those cooler days / then Warm and Safe Base Layer + Down Jacket for close to or freezing cold weather. This then gives me a system for all seasons.

Excellent review; helped me better understand the differences between the Kodiak and the Badlands Pro jackets--and to decide I'm definitely a Badlands kind of guy! Did follow your link to the Sports Bike Shop, and indeed they do offer discounts on the Kodiak (and nearly all of Klim's textile line). Worth noting however that as of this writing, the only jackets offered are NON-CURRENT VERSIONS, meaning NOT the same jackets Klim currently offers. Is that important? Depends--do you want the latest improvements and modifications, or do you want to save money on the total price of your gear? Only YOU can answer that question, however, one should know A) these are not current models and B) what the differences are (improvements and upgrades made) from model version to model version, BEFORE deciding. Because Klim makes such a dizzying array of jackets, new potential customers will find the line overwhelming enough, without adding the extra confusion of prior model versions to the mix. All of which is to say, make sure you're comparing Apples to Apples, before pressing that BUY button!

I have found this jacket brand-new for $700 on reputable motorcycle retailer websites. I am considering grabbing one. I’m not an ADV rider. But I ride a 2019 Ninja ZX6R. I’m after something functional that will prevent moisture and abrasions. I currently use a leather non-perforated Danese jacket, and it’s terribly uncomfortable and even more hot with zero airflow. I’m ready to move to a fabric/mesh type material for a jacket.

I sell bike gear for a living and whilst it is expensive stuff, Klim is some of the highest quality stuff we sell, we barely have any issues with them, especially compared to Rukka. If you can't afford Klim stuff, best stuff to go for would be Rev'It, especially if you're a taller rider like me. I recently invested in a Rev'It Horizon 2 jacket and it's so good, I'm planning on selling 2 of my other jackets because their jobs are taken by this jacket

I’ve owned the Kodiak suit for just over 1 year and to date it’s not let me down in terms of letting any water in and it’s also kept me well ventilated whilst touring Spain in mid 30 degree heat. There are some issues with the suit however... the cuffs are far too tight even when you’ve loosened them off, which makes it a major pain in the arse when trying to get your cuff over a winter glove. Also, at this price point there should 100% be a detachable storm collar, as there is with many of Klims rival offerings. The neck line as it stands is a little on the low side which means without the additional of a neck tube it’s susceptible cold air and or rain getting in. But the Klim Kodiak suits ace card is it being a genuine four season jacket. Thanks to it having an abundance of air vents and the breath-ability of 3 ply Gore Tex it’s proven to be able to cope well in extremely hot weather and conversely doesn’t let the wind and rain in. The likes of Rukka is arguably superior for warm winter riding but woefully ill equipped on the vents front for hotter climates. For this reason I can live with and work around the jackets small transgressions but would say to Klim... if you had only given more consideration to the cuffs and collar you wouldn’t have just had the best suit of the bunch on your hands... but a perfect suit also.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Yes i didn't mention the cuffs, but you're right there isnt much adjustability. I have skinny wrists and don't wear thick bulky gloves so never saw that as a problem. I also also wear at least a neck tube, and i have quite a short neck, so again never had an issue. I could see how some people could though. I'm testing another suit which does have quite a high close fitting collar, and i'm struggling a bit with it catching on the chin strap buckle of my helmet.
@CommonsFilms
@CommonsFilms 3 жыл бұрын
@@mancavemoto it’s good to compare/ contrast our experiences so that others can make the most informed decision possible. I certainly wouldn’t want a higher collar, but would like the option of a detachable storm collar and would as mention expect one at this price point. Also, like you I don’t have the largest of wrists and when wearing summer gloves there’s no issue at all with the cuff’s. But the jacket is still exceptionally good so until Kodiak 2.0 arrives and addresses these minor issues I’m more than happy enough 👍

So I need to put my hand 🤚 up in front of my helmet to stop glare and then my vision is real good Tony. Real good. I see that white helmet of yours has a peak in front of it. I had one and loved it, but rain was making its way in the collar, even tightened to the max you need a large neck to have any chance of having it adjusted properly, was really disappointed about it. Contacted Klim they referred me to a company that could modify goretex jackets, but they unfortunately couldn't do anything to address it...so I sold it. I'm 6"1", 190lbs, long arms and the length was perfect, I have normal sized arms, but I put thinner D3O elbow pads to facilitate movement. So my conclusion was that you need a thick neck and thin arms to fit properly. The collar also wasn't the most comfortable (compared to Rukka jackets I've had). Also sucks that they sell at that price while being made in Vietnam. I would highly recommend that anyone looking at these try them before buying. The fit is not similar to any other brand I've tried. It felt as if it was almost tailor made for me, but that poor collar design just didn't work for me.

Well done, you did a good job of covering the main features. However, just like you found a few nitpicks, I did too. Firstly, I’m not sure if you mentioned the CE rating of the jacket. It’s only EN17092 AA. Now if I spent that much, I’d expect AAA and a test certificate for EN13595 proving the jacket would pass level 1. It wouldn’t pass because apart from the goretex which independent tests have shown this laminate does very well, if it’s big brother the Badlands pro is any indication (motocap.com.au). Essentially the kodiak is a very technical armored rain jacket. However it won’t win any awards for impact abrasion protection. Furthermore, for that kind of money (which I can afford), I’d spend the money on a far safer jacket and it’d be made for measure and customizable. Although I’m British , I haven’t lived there for a long time. I live in Vietnam but will move to Turkey soon so I need something for hot and humid but not particularly rainy. I don’t want a laminated jacket that protects mainly from rain all the time when rain is rare and I can just take waterproofs in a pannier. That’s what rain suits from Oxford or many others make and charge roughly £50-100 for the entire suit. I’d want a suit that protects me properly (great armour, great impact abrasion, cut resistance, etc - level 2 EN1621 and EN13595). The kodiak isn’t that suit but there are textile suits which are far safer. Any suggestions on a safer suit that isn’t waterproof?
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and thanks for your feedback. Obviously the higher the rating the better, but given the feel of this suit I was happy to wear it with a AA rating. Without seeing the test results is hard to determine what it is that makes it a AA over a AAA. The problem in reality is that we don’t know how protective garments are until the worst happens. I’ve seen people crash in a t-shirt and jeans and come away unscathed. I’ve also seen someone crash at low speed in full leather touring gear and have a horrible broken leg. Price as you know is not an indicator of safety, but generally the more you spend the better it is. I have seen that Klim are bringing a ‘AAA’ rated goretex pro suit to the market this year. Most textile jackets seem to go down the waterproof route unless they have some mesh in them, but they are unlikely to reach AAA standard. One alternative could be to wear a Knox Urbane armoured shirt under a very abrasion resistant outer jacket? Then you have got the best of both worlds as the armour in the shirt is all CE level 2?
@low-costgearbudgettour714

Good suggestions. I try to support UK businesses so I’m looking into Hideout Leathers Air concept jacket - CE/EN13595 level 2 in the zones 1&2 and level 1 in zones 3/4. It’s pricey but made-to-measure and astoundingly safe for a summer jacket. I’ve had my eye on the Knox Zephyr Pro AA level (the urbane is not protective enough at level A). It’d be a step down from Hideout’s offering but for a fraction of the price. Likewise RST makes some nice kit with airbags. I could get 2 jackets with airbags from them (for different purposes) and share an In&Motion “brain” between different jackets for the price of the Hideout jacket. Finally, I’m impatiently waiting for Bull-it’s 2021 line announcements. I like their kit too. Generally, they are (or were) more safety conscious than other manufacturers. Damn, I wish I could test their stuff then choose!

Good review.. honest/real world as usual.. as an all year round rider for 45+ years....BIG believer in you get what you pay for ...and that extra initial outlay "usually" works out cheaper in longer-term...whilst you benefit from the superior item. Tried most of top makes including, Dane, Rukka , Aerostich ( best build quality and service )...and all have some area where improvement could be made ( cuffs and collars the most common weak parts ) ... but then again... what works for one person does not work for the next...so companies have a near-impossible task to satisfy everyone. Would be dream world if we could take all their good bits...and make the ultimate suit !!!....then again... we would need a lotto win then ...lol .. Keep the videos coming.....stay safe

Thanks Andrew, thats what I try and do. I agree more often than not you do get what you pay for, but we are spoilt for choice when it comes to good kit these days. Some people underestimate how much more comfort you get riding in poor weather in really good kit. The less you are thinking about being cold or wet, the more you can concentrate on the road/trail. Some people in the comments have complained about the collar, but i never had an issue, but by the same token I would have preferred slightly shorter sleeves.

The suit costs more than my current bike. Also I haven’t even got a man cave so I suppose I’m not the target market. It’s technically a very good suit but crash protection is only mediocre (EN17092 AA) which you didn’t even mention. I’ve got a textile suit that protects far better (EN13595 level 2 - far, far more protective than level AA or even AAA).
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 3 жыл бұрын
Of course It doesn’t suit everyone, no pun intended. If you look at purely protection then the suit you mention may have a higher level. EN13595 is an older standard (4 parts) that is being withdrawn now that EN17092 has become legislation. The new standard had a higher number of tests over more zones that the previous version. EN13595-2 refers to impact abrasion resistance. I guess it’s all about what the balance. This suit with its waterproof, Windproof and breathability matched with AA protection is more than enough for most riders. You can’t just say that the old standard is far far better without directly looking at the two specific garments in comparison. The reality is with all protective gear is that it’s only as good as the crash situation allows. What I mean by that is that a crash on a track requires very good abrasion resistance in a long slide. A crash at the same speed on the road means your more likely to hit ‘street furniture’ before you are worrying about slide times. Thanks for watching and I appreciate you taking the time to comment
@low-costgearbudgettour714
@low-costgearbudgettour714 3 жыл бұрын
@@mancavemoto good points but I don’t consider EN17092 a high enough standard. According to 2 experts, it’s a rubber stamp standard created so existing textiles could pass. The impact abrasion test was lowered over EN13595. The only harder level was seam strength which is good but not if the abrasion standards were lowered. The top Level AAA is more lenient than the lower level 1 (for abrasion). Hardly anybody cares though. Just a few safety conscious people care. I do because most textile suits will be destroyed after one crash whereas most leather will be reusable after several crashes. Level 2 required greater than 7 seconds of impact abrasion before failure. Also, a correction, EN17092 has 3 zones and EN13595 has 4 zones. Zones that only considered medium risk (EN17092) are considered high risk for the previous standard.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a subject that is certainly open to a lot of debate. As example you can argue that seam strength is a very important aspect. You can have the most abrasion resistant material in the world, but if the seams burst as soon as you hit the ground, that’s going to be pretty pointless. I think they are generally trying to raise the standards across the board and it’s a balancing act between protection and wearability. As EN17092 is the ‘new’ standard that’s what manufacturers are going to aim at. I think ‘any’ protective gear has got to help. I’m not one to tell other people what to wear when they ride, that’s up to them but I’m still dismayed when I see people riding in inappropriate gear. This summer I saw a guy riding an R1 and he was wearing a Shoei xspirit III helmet, race gauntlets, race boots with....jogging shorts and a vest top!

In my opinion it is completely over the top to buy a jacket for that much money. Over here, (Netherlands, Europe), the jacket alone sets you back 1100 Euro's. My latest bike was just 100 euro's more (Suzuki TL1000S). Unless you're making a trip around the world and need a "one does it all jacket" it is just another "look wat i have" piece of kit, and there is already more than enough of that. Sometimes i have the impression people can not enjoy motorcycles unless they have "the right riding gear".
