I was in the army for 11 years, former paratrooper on jump status. I started carrying and felt uncomfortable with one in the pipe. I took a 1:1 tactical shooting class with a retired county sheriffs deputy sniper. Ever since that day I carry 1 In the pipe, extra mag and I shoot almost every weekend. I dry fire from different positions in my house, my wife thinks I am crazy. Lying, sitting, even on the toilet. I train because IF something ever goes down I want to be the one walking away with my family safe. Long Live The Airborne!!

He said " DAMN GUN JUST WENT OFF" while out hunting with me and dad. The heavy brush and trees we hunt in got the trigger that he exposed and left a 10inch scar down his leg. As a former member of NSW SBU-24. It is a pleasure to see Elite ' Operators ' sharing proper knowledge. Having said that, it is each gun owner's responsibility to make sure the firearm, hand gun or long gun is in proper condition and safe to fire even firearms that come straight from the factory can have unseen defects, human errors do occur, so do yourself and others a big favor and check to make sure all parts are functional and it's safe for you to use the firearm. Some errors can be fatal. So eliminating any potential errors is the best practice when it comes to firearms.

FIRST RULE OF GUN SAFETY: ASSUME ALL GUNS ARE LOADED!!! Another problem with carrying with an empty chamber is the tendency to assume your gun is not “fully loaded.” Dangerous assumption. I carry 1 in the chamber always and I always KNOW my gun is “fully loaded” and I act accordingly.

Two major points I think got overlooked. 1) Many self defense scenarios get to point blank range before they become lethal threats. There's a high probability of needing your other hand as a leveraging arm to keep them at arms distance making racking a round impractical. 2) Administrative actions like racking a round are primarily where malfunctions and negligent discharges occur, not from actual firing. Multiple law enforcement studies confirm this. It's an unnecessary failure point. Just some thoughts from an engineer and competitive shooter. Liking the channel guys, look forward to seeing what else you come out with.

People also need to have a carry mindset if they are going to carry. The #1 thing that will save your life is situational awareness. Doesn't matter if you carry one in the pipe, or if its a 9mm or 10mm, or if you can land a full magazine in a 1 inch group at 25 yards, if you don't pay attention to those around you. When I sit in restaurants, I sit facing as many entrances to the room or building as I can. I look at the people around me, I look at their faces. I look at people coming in, I look at people outside windows. I look for odd things like heavy coats in hot weather, overly covered people ( hoodie, hat, sunglasses, head down) and I pay attention to those people. It isn't paranoia per se, but it may seem like so at first. After a while just like training with a firearm, it becomes old hat, second nature. A lot of people in my neighborhood are suspicious of people they don't know wandering around the streets. Most of them hide in their home in fear and stare at them through the curtains. I choose to engage those people whom look suspicious (challenge them). I say hi, I look at them, I wave. Most people that are up to no good, tend to wind down once they know they are being watched, or they know people are watching. Sometimes, people are just hanging out without any ill intentions at all. TLDR: Be aware of your surroundings. This includes people and situations. When something looks suspicious, stare at it, engage it with words or gestures. A person trained with a pistol are worthless if they don't have situational awareness.

I'm ex Army and I don't carry hot. The only reason is because I have small kids and in my opinion that's one extra thing I can possibly forget about around the house. I get that not carrying hot can cost me time in a heated situation, but I have actually trained myself thousands of times with pulling my carry gun and having to chamber a round so that it's become muscle memory and habit. I sleep better knowing I didn't leave a round in a chamber in one of my many guns that I have in the house. I do keep all my guns, except the one in the nightstand, out of reach of my kids, but I still need that extra step and not have one in the chamber. None of the pistols I own have external safeties, so I can't worry that one of my kids happens to get to one of my guns and squeeze the trigger. I'd rather take my chances with an extra 2 seconds and not keep my guns hot. At their age, none of my two kids have the strength to rack any of my guns. They will always have curiosity, and when I feel they are old enough, I will teach them gun safety and marksmanship. Great video!! 👍

Ditto Jay. I'm not afraid of AD or whatever. It's just preference to go Israeli style. The VE crew are serious no doubt and for on duty carry- this is a no brainer. I don't use or rely on a safety- not having one in the chamber is my safety and that's how I train. As a civilian in Mayberry, if I get danger close to the point where racking one is the reason I can't respond, I've got bigger issues with my situational awareness. Another benefit is this makes storage/clearing more straight forward- I'm not screwing around with the round in the pipe at the end of the day. Half the time I ankle carry anyway to stay discreet so putting a stop watch to my quick draw is rather moot. Just watched this video after the "EDC pocket dump" episode. Pop quiz.... how many of these dudes had a round in the chamber in that episode ;-)

One thing I used to do to help myself become comfortable with one in the chamber was walk around my house with a snapcap in the chamber and a fully loaded mag and TRIED to make the gun fire. I’d jump around, quickly low crawl, sprint, sit in every different position I could think of, etc. so that may help you. Also learn your firearm. I personally carry a glock and really got into HOW the gun functions and it literally cannot go off without a trigger press. The trigger releases a firing pin block. Without that, the firing pin is not able to move forward to strike the primer. All of this is of course in addition to training.

Go get some more training and train at home dry firing and pistol manipulation, function checks and just practice practice practice and you will get to the point where you realize you can fix any problem that comes your way and the pistol won’t go off without you physically pulling the pistol out of the holster and pulling the trigger. Not only is time of the essence if you ever have to pull the pistol out and use it without one in the chamber but one thing a lot of people forget to mention is that there’s a huge chance if you need to use it and your in a fight or flight situation, you will probably forget to rack the slide and you will just try to pull the trigger real quick and nothing will happen, then you are really screwed. Also, if you ever go to pull your pistol out of your holster and it slips, DO NOT try and catch it, let it fall, it’s a pistol and can handle falling, but there’s a good chance if you try to catch it you will accidentally pull the trigger.

Totally agree. Suggestion though, if you added a short explanation on the Glock (and other striker pistols) trigger system to explain why it is impossible to go off without a trigger press. That striker isn't even tensioned until a trigger press. Keep it up with the round table discussions. I like the insight.

Andrew Bradshaw I would appreciate that explanation, being a visual guy and never seeing the mechanics illustrated. I haven't found a well done breakdown on KZbin yet. Its mostly gun advocates repeating that it can't go off without the trigger being squeezed. The guy on the right brings up the sig p320 malfunction - a graphic on why the sig failed and why most modern handguns dont fail would lay that common fear to rest.

In response to the article; A. Why was he conceal carrying in his house while wrestling with his son? B. Why was his weapon able to just fall out of his holster? This story sounds really fishy to me; not only does the gun discharge on its own, but manages to get not only one, but two head shots with one round. I'm not saying this didn't happen the way they said, but the odds are so astronomical that I feel I would be way more likely to be in a situation where I need a round chambered before I draw my weapon.

My problem is that I went from "treat the gun as always loaded, never point it at anyone, check everything a billion times to clear the chamber" training as a kid to people telling me as an adult to carry with a round chambered. It's just a weird transition. Carrying a gun pretty much goes against all my experiences as a kid. It's loaded, a round is chambered, the action is cocked, and it's constantly aimed at my body or others depending on angle of sit. My experience as a kid is probably a bad example tho. I primarily lived in city areas, and visits to grandparents usually brought around some infrequent trips to a gun range where I basically only touched the gun when I was going to fire. Now as an adult who wants to carry, I'm super uncomfortable with carrying because it's been forever since I've done any training. I need to train before I carry, and then I'll probably want to practice carrying with an empty pistol for a while xD. Or I could just get a revolver 🤔

For Christ's sake. I seriously thought this was a click bait joke, sadly mistaken... Tier 1 Special Operations all the way down to that man or woman that does not want to be a victim, no matter who you are and have the good sense to conceal carry a firearm to defend you & yours. Can anyone give me ONE remotely intelligent or plausible reason or scenario where carrying your sidearm WITHOUT one in the chamber would be an advantage should you need to use deadly force ? I do understand Closed Bolt carrying an M4/AR15 etc. But by all means please educate me. Why in God's name would you want to have to draw your pistol and rack a round, possibly engaging the safety accidentally on certain pistols (M9 forexample) acquiring a sight picture and squeezing off as many rounds as it takes to neutralize the threat. All well using gross motor skills as you are most likely to be experiencing an adrenal dump in a deadly force situation. Using this mindset, what's next? Carrying your sidearm without a magazine inserted?
