With no handcuffs, diesel for police cars or stationery to write reports, Rabaul's police are ill-equipped, even by Papua New Guinea standards. But local businessmen have had enough: they've enlisted as reservists and taken up arms.
Virtually every business has been hit by the so-called rascal gangs. "We were hearing of people being stabbed in the street and stores getting broken into," states shipping manager Adam Butler. Under equipped and demoralised, the police have thrown in the towel. "They don't really give a damn any more" complains Bruce Alexander. So locals have taken the law into their own hands. Every Friday and Saturday, they put on uniforms and collect their weapons for another night patrolling the town. "In the last six months, we've taken out just about all of the top ten criminals in Rabaul," boasts one.

Rabaul is not a known crime spot in PNG.Rabaul is a known international tourist destination. This is not an accurate depiction of beautiful rabaul. unfortunately this documentary over exaggerated.

I have been to Rabul, and stayed at the Kulau Lodge which had super views and the owner was beyond hospitable. Fortunately didn't witness crime there but in Port Moresby and in the highlands it was definitely touch and go at times. Lovely country though.

This is my home town. I grew up here and was a kid when this Police reservists were patrolling the streets at night. Though the concept was good and had a good intention, many a times people were harrased and beaten. They could just stop you on the road, put the flashlight or spot light in your face and search you without a warrant. Every young man or boys moving or walking around in the night are suspected of being a trouble maker. Though that time the town had some persons that were feared in the community, most were just petty criminals.

I'm from matupit and I believe there's no need to patrol the nights in Rabaul. But if the rascals are real, I guess that's because of the volcanic eruption in 1994 which result in people losing every thing. People need to start somewhere to survive. Some things for the Rabaul MP to think about..

This is not an accurate depiction of Rabaul. Rabaul is a peaceful area. You want to see real crime, go to Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, Wewak or the Highlands.

No wonder those police didn't find the murderer and rapist, they prioritised drug offences more than them and just drove along roads when there's so much jungle to hide in lol
