in my experience, there's very little difference in a 20" and 14" barrel if both have an improved cylinder choke. there's also little to no difference in velocity for a 14" and a 20". small arms review did a test where they lopped off a 30" single shot inch by inch and found that above 12", the difference was minimal. after 12" the velocity drops hard and spread opens up.

Disagree on the barrel shortening affecting accuracy and spread. I live in Canada and as long as a manual action centerfire has an overall length of 26" we can have any barrel length, so short pump actions are popular up here. I have a shotgun with an 8.5" barrel, a 12.5", two 14", and two 18.5", so I have experience with short barrels. AMMO and choke is the biggest factor affecting spread. Barrel length will affect spread with shitty ammo like cheap birdshot and cheap buck like S&B, but if you get flight control buckshot there is no noticeable difference I have seen between 12.5" and 18" barrels. My 8.5" has some extra spread, but it actually isn't as much with good ammo. And if you thread your barrel for chokes you can even get good spreads out of shitty ammo as well. 14" is actually a really nice sweet spot between length and capacity that a lot of people up here go for. Remington makes a 14" barrel with rifle sights. Thread it for chokes or get some flight control ammo and test it out.

Isnt it 26" overall length for things like semi auto rifles as well? Grear comment its just you only mentioned manual action. I was under the impression that any shotgun or rifle is non restricted if it has an overall length of 26"

@TheRyanDude 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree too, I've don't have the experience but I've done a lot of reading on the subject. What I've found is barrel length on a shotgun doesn't affect spread, accuracy or velocity considerably as long as it's over about ten inches. Too many people won't question "common knowledge". Back in black powder days it mattered but not now with modern powder.

This is right on. A 14" 870P with Federal Flight Control keeps a very tight group. It all comes down to ammo and choke. Even though I'm not a fan of his, James Yaeger did a great test comparing different types of shells, using different barrel lengths, at different distances. I know from personal experience with my own 870P SBS that 2 3/4 OO Buck Flight Control is the tits out of a 14" barrel and is very comparable to an 18" barrel at self defense distances.
@toddk1377
@toddk1377 4 жыл бұрын
Not arguing the fact that a 14" barrel can still have good patterns and accuracy, but as a law enforcement firearm, capacity needs to be kept in mind, thus is another reason to leave the barrel at 18inches. You can't get 7+1 in a 14" barrel without the magazine tube sticking way the hell out past the muzzle and it looks rediculous.
@marzcapone9939
@marzcapone9939 4 жыл бұрын
@@toddk1377 I have a Vang Comp +1 extension on my 870 SBS, it's a 5+1, with 2 3/4" shells. That extension makes the tube same length as the barrel. My Remington factory 14" bead barrel has the fixed modified choke, and like mentioned, is the tits with the flight control wad. That bead sight is dead on too, I can hit a 2" shoot n see with slugs at 30 yards, every time.

I love your approach to solving this problem. I feel like every American just decided that if long guns with short barrels have extra regulation and taxes, they're automatically more betterer for all situations and applications, even more so when the military replaced 20" M16s with 14.5" M4s. Now everybody wants the shortest barrel possible no matter what the gun is actually supposed to do.

Love your content, but I'm going to have to disagree with several points here. With respect to accuracy, shorter barrels are known to actually be more accurate in general. For practical accuracy, the shooter has way more impact than 14" vs. 18". For pattern, you've ignored both the option to choke the barrel as well as ammunition solutions such as Flite Control. Either can make any 14" gun pattern just as well as an 18" gun. Finally, what makes you think a shotgun inherently requires more LOP? I'm curious what the original LOP, new collapsed LOP, and new extended LOP values are. Thanks.

Federal's Flitecontrol buckshot solves the pattern problem with a 14" barrel (and really any cylinder bore). Honestly, any department that's using any other buckshot is wrong. That said, there's not much reason for cops to run shotguns these days, outside of for LTL stuff. Just run patrol carbines already. Even with good ammo like the Federal I mentioned, shotguns are still kind of not great (at best - a liability at worst), especially past about 20-30 yards.

Ugh... There's so much wrong here: 1) barrel length has no impact on pattern density, what matters is the forcing cone, choke, and cartridge selection. 2) Shotguns use very fast burning powders, so the shot charge is basically up to speed in the first 12" of barrel. The difference in velocity is usually about ~100 fps between a 14" and a 28" barrel. So when talking about slugs the trajectory won't be significantly different. 3) As per 1 and 2, there's no reason a gun should be "less accurate" by dropping the barrel length by 4". You do pay a penalty in terms of recoil and capacity...

Having owned an 870 for many years and have played with many stocks and such, I just prefer an 18" barrel with a one shot mag extension, magpul forend grip, and an AR style adjustable buttstock. The 18" barrel has removable choke tubes and bead sight that has a fiber optic sight. I stay with the 1 shot mag extension because it goes from 4+1 to 5+1 and it remains legal for hunting deer and turkey. If I was in that officer's shoes, I'd just put a top folding stock, had one before on a 590 and it worked great as well as looked cool. Either way, the dfa AR stock is still a good choice and since it's made of metal, it can be used to tame an uncontrollable suspect if need be.
