The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced on Friday January 26 that it ruled in favor of South Africa’s request for provisional measures in its case against Israel over the ongoing war on Gaza and rejected Israel’s request for the case to be dismissed.

Thank you for clarifying this atrocious situation. Many countries in the global South have experienced the evil behavior of the colonial imperial power, to subjugate, steal and loot treasures over the the last 3 or 4 centuries. How can this human condition of greed, cruelty and power be overcome? Where are the noble loving principles of God, Jesus, Allah, Buddha, Vishnu, Shiva, holy spirits? The most important takeaway is: the prima-facie of the genocide charges brought against Israel is proven in the ICJ, and accordingly provisional measures were ordered.

It's much much more than a warning. It is the first (very successful) steps in a process that is likely to find Israel guilty of genocide. Also, these orders require Israel implement a series of extensive measures in the next 30 days or they will be in breach of the court. If Israel fails to implement these measures within 30 days, this is likely to be seen as further evidence of genocide once this goes to 'trial'. Also non-implementation is likely to set in motion a series of events at the security council, general assembly and ICC leading to profound consequences for Israel and those who support it.

They didn’t rule there was genocide, nor did they call for ceasefire. They just told Israel to take measures to prevent genocide. Also they ruled that Hamas must release the hostages.

That they accepted the case at all is certainly a win. I'm not convinced the wording amounts to a call for a ceasefire though. I've heard others analyze it to mean that the court recognizes Israel as having a right to self defense as long as they don't commit genocide. And they've left it up to Israel to determine what that means for now until a thorough investigation can be conducted over the coming YEARS.

It ordered them to release the hostages from what I heard. That doesn't sound like one sided. Those hostages are the only leverage they have.
